Re: MI and Manifold; Output from MapInfo
Hello Listers, Well Manifold does not produce thematic maps the way MapInfo does it, so it can not possibly replace old good MapInfo. It's rather an extremely powerful GIS / spatial <> add-on to MapInfo (as well as to ArcView etc.). And their 3d visualisation stuff is cool too. Up till now, I was deliberately deleting all messages about printing from MapInfo. Now I have to produce a poster-size map from MapInfo and regret it. Can anyone offer any suggestions for professional [vector] output from MapInfo? Avenza's MapPublisher seems to do the job, but I recently noticed small notes on the website stating incompatibility of the most recent versions of MapPublisher and Illustrator / Freehand, the major host programs. Something to think about, given that upgrades to any subsequent versions from any of the parties (Avenza itself, Adobe and Macromedia) aren't cheap. The only option so far seems to be exporting MapInfo layers to dxf. Or converting everything from MapInfo to ArcView and exporting layers as Adobe Illustrator .ai files (very handy option in ArcView). However, in any case the attributes and formatting/design are lost by the time they reach any DTP program. Also, I tried printing from MapInfo to PDF - the output is raster, not vector. Any plug-in for Corel from MapInfo? Corel may be worse than Adobe packages, but it seems to have a decent vector output and the cost of upgrading to Corel 9 Graphics Suite (Draw and PhotoPaint and many more) is several times cheaper ($200 US) than buying or even upgrading Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop alone. And Corel offers competitive upgrades, Adobe does not. Does anyone know any other program (other than ArcView) that produces professional output from the layout and can eat MapInfo files? Any suggestions? Gleb. P.S. Re: MI Distances
>For such operations we use FME (http://www.safe.com) and the built-in >"Proximity Factory" (Neighbour Finder). It can find the nearest objects to >any others, including distance calculation and work directly on MapInfo >TAB files. However, FME is a commercial product. You find an example of >the Neighbour Finder on: http://www.tydac.ch/en/fme_workbench.htm ... or simply buy Manifold 4.5 from www.manifold.net for $170 US and you'll solve your task as well as maaany related ones. In terms of functionality when it comes to spatial analysis and GIS, it's a "pocket ArcInfo" (and price-wise too!) Import MapInfo files, process them in Manifold, and bring them back to MapInfo if you want. Gleb. MI pdf files
Hello everybody, What I just discovered is that the recent version of Corel Draw (v. 9.0) alows creation of Adobe Acrobat pdf files as an export function. The cost of upgrading to Corel 9.0 Graphics Suite is just US$199, and you can buy a qualifying package for upgrade for peanuts (Corel Office / Corel WP Office v. 6-7-8). There is also a free filter for Corel 9.0 that allows creation of Macromedia Flash presentations (although with some constraints). So in the end you buy the whole Corel suite (incl. vector Corel Draw, raster Corel PhotoPaint, Corel Trace and many other useful utilities) with pdf and Flash export capabilities for less money than you would pay for Adobe Acrobat writer ($235) or Macromedia Flash ($280) alone! Something to think about. This is not a paid ad from Corel, rather my personal excitement which I got from spending my own money - and I think it's a good deal. I am not saying you will have the full flexibility of handling these "alien" formats within CorelDraw (you cannot edit them, you can only export to them). I tried exporting MapInfo maps to dxf, then converting it into Adobe Illustrator .ai file and importing back to Corel as vector layer. The straight dxf import did not result in anything for whatever reason. E.g. a technology very similar to exporting vector layers from ArcView to Corel Draw for final cartographic design. Gleb. MI Selecting street segments for street addresses
Hi everybody, I have an array of street addresses (as text strings) and want to select street segments (lines) they are located on (the address falls within the segment's address range). E.g. going halfway through geocoding, without creating points, I want to just select the appropriate street segment from a street file. (Or select all addresses that are located on a given street segment, the other way around). Do I have to buy StreetInfo for operations like this, or is there any other MI command / utility I can use? Thanks in advance. Gleb.
