RE: To all on the MI-L help list!

1999-07-15 Thread Jonathan Stokes

well..
someone accidently mails the list a joke that was meant only for friends
people then argue with that person as to the nature of that joke
other people then argue about whether or not to argue about the joke

oh yes what fun

MI Re: Jumping to a Specific View

1999-08-05 Thread Jonathan Stokes

ahoy listers
a MapBasic question here (and i imagine it will be dead simple). i have
a number of MI tables that make up a map of the UK when opened togther
in the same mapper window. one of the tables contains a series of
regions within the UK (there are quite a lot of them - approx 180. we've
wrtten some code which opens up all the tables in a mapper and then
styles them up in the correct manner.

what i want to be able to do now is to return the minimum bounds of each
of these regions (we've come across the mbr function) when jumped too
and then zoom in to those minimum bounds. It would also then be nice to
be able to zoom out a bit (say by 10% or so).

any ideas ???

thanks in advance

RE: MI trouble combining complex polygons

1999-08-20 Thread Jonathan Stokes

or even better...,
if you choose the 'create points' option and get handy little markers to
tell you where the errors are, they are (invariably) in the wrong place.
like an error in Scotland apperas to be in the middle of the atlantic.

which was nice

so shall we take up andy bailey's suggestion and just write a system all
by ourselves ? any ideas for names (there must be some friday
funnies in that one).

Selecting via record no in MI

1999-09-02 Thread Jonathan Stokes

Mornin All
(well that depends on the timezone but never mind...)

At the moment i'm trying to import MapInfo data into a slightly non
standard GIS system. The trouble is the files i am bringing in are
pretty large (100,000 - 500,000 records). The system i am importing to
(via mif/mid) can only have a maximum of 160,000 records in a file. thus
i need to be able to slice these larger MI files up into smaller chunks.
Is there a 'record number' function in MI anywhere so i can say in an
SQL statement that i to select want records 1 - 100,000 and then save
the query ?

anyone think of any other ways of doing this

cheers

RE: MI Object oriented programming for Map Basic

1999-09-02 Thread Jonathan Stokes

another couple of cents

this is all starting to sound a lot like what ESRI did with Arc/Info 8.
If you could develop in VB say VC++ or delphi or whatever that would
make a lot of peoples lives a lot easier. Personally i do a lot of data
processing in MI and the ability to get the VC++ developers in my team
involved in writing utilities using MI is a mouth watering prospect.
it'd certainly make my life a lot easier

Jon.

PS a 15th way of getting MI to crash. go away to russia for 3 months
lend your PC to a colleague come back to it and perform simple tasks
(save copy as etc...)

Re: Selecting via record no in MI (SUM)

1999-09-02 Thread Jonathan Stokes

hello all
well it looks like i've got a response to the question. to use the ROWID
function to select the records. It sounds like the best idea is to add a
temp column to the table. populate it using the rowid function and then
select on that.

Waiter. What seems to be the problem?

Patron: No, it's still there.
Waiter: Maybe it's the way you're using the soup. Try
eating it with a fork instead.
Patron: Even when I use the fork, the fly is still there.

Waiter: Maybe the soup is incompatible with the bowl. What
kind of bowl are you using?
Patron: A SOUP bowl!

Waiter: Hmmm, that should work. Maybe it's a configuration
problem. How was the bowl set up?
Patron: You brought it to me on a saucer. What has that to
do with the fly in my soup?!

Waiter: Can you remember everything you did before you
noticed the fly in your soup?
Patron: I sat down and ordered the Soup of the Day!

Waiter: Have you considered upgrading to the latest Soup

Patron: You have more than one Soup of the Day each day??
Waiter: Yes, the Soup of the Day is changed every hour.
Patron: Well, what is the Soup of the Day now?
Waiter: The current Soup of the Day is tomato.

Patron: Fine. Bring me the tomato soup, and the check.
 I'm running late now.

MI Clipping Polygons

1999-09-08 Thread Jonathan Stokes

Hiya All
i seem to be asking a lot of questions recently but i guess that's what
we're all here for..

i basically have two coverages one of which needs to be clipped using
the other. This is not a problem as i have a utility that does this. The
problem is this, the clipper layer is in some cases 'bigger' than
the layer it is being used to clip. SO i need some way of snapping the
layer that is being clipped to the layer that is used to clip it.
(?***!!^&&&!!!)

hope that make sense any ideas would be really gratefully accepted.

cheers

I Don't know but i witnessed an interesting spectacle the other day. i

MI OS DG Resignation

1999-10-29 Thread jonathan stokes

Afternoon all

i would suggest that Geoff Robinson's resignation come
a bout as a result of the frustrations of working with
a notoriously slow moving and conservative Government
Agency.

As someone who works with the OS and their datasets on
a regular basis i can entirely understand this. The
whole mindset is still way behind the rest of the
industry on things such as data formats (to non Uk
MapInfo ers pray you never have to come into contact
with NTF), data supply and data pricing. One gets the
feeling that the whole thing is still geared towards
the 1:50,000 paper maps.

In the recent Article in Mapping Awareness Geoff
Robinson said that he had found 'a huge well of
goodwill towards the OS...' - from whom

I feel sorry foir Geoff Robinson because i feel he was
trying to change things and possibly for the better. I
only hope his sucessor has a similar attitude or a
major opportunity will have been lost.

sorry if that was a bit of a rant but i feel it had to
be said. this whole situation whilst mainly affecting
the UK is symptomatic of the way data supply and data
providers can affect the whole of the industry
(witness the drop in proces mnetionned by bill in NZ
and Autralia)

cheers & have a good weekend all

Jon.

Hello all
And when I say beginner I mean it! be very warned.

what I need to do is the following (mapbasic 4.1 and mi 4.5)
I have just done an update column on a table and then a query into a
table called selection.
I then want to open a browser window for selection but only if there
have been any results from the query
(obviously I'll get an error message if I try to browse from the
selection and the query has not returned any results)

MI Adding Map Layers

happy Friday everyone
I have an mbx that a part of it's operation opens a MapInfo table and
adds it to the current mapper. This works fine except that when it does

Unselect All

anyone any ideas on why this is ?

no, there must be something in the code that leaves the tables
selected, it is as simple as that... the code could have a line
to "Unselect All" (I think you'd actually do a Run Menu Command
Something) but it doesn't. You could make a new "wrapper" mbx that
calls the mbx (Run Application "C:\MyPath\MyProg.Mbx") and then
does the unselection...

happy Friday everyone
I have an mbx that a part of it's operation opens a MapInfo table and
adds it to the current mapper. This works fine except that when it does
that all the objects in this table appear to be selected and it kinda
spoils the look of the thing. I can only clear it by doing Query >
Unselect All

anyone any ideas on why this is ?

2000-05-17 Thread Jonathan Stokes

Hi All
this might be one for the fbritish GISers amongst us but maybe not. i have a
OSCAR (Ordnance Survey Centre Alignment of Roads) dataset. My problem is
that it represents Motorways and dual carriageway roads with 2 centrelines
(one for each carriageway).

i need to remove one of these links (it can be either as they are not
generally more than 10 -20 m part which is accurate enough for my purposes)

the links have no common features beyond either their proper name (i.e main
street) or their road number (i.e M621)

any thoughts ideas apreciated.

cheers

MI MapInfo and ArcView 8.x

2000-07-12 Thread jonathan stokes

Hi Mappers
just a quick question to see if anyone has noticed the
ESRI announcement on ArcView 8.1. It looks like it'll
be be a 'cut down' version of ArcInfo 8.0 combined
with the current ArcView 3.2 with all the object
orientated geographic objects and open system
architecture goodies that this means.

where does this leave Mapinfo/MapBasic ???

cheers
