MI GIS/ESRI Day
Dear all I was interested to read the discussions going on as regards Mapinfo and education/GIS. I've never used ESRI (might explain why I'm out of work at the moment?!) but last year in the Solomons the local Mapinfo User group (small though it maybe) joined in GIS Day and organised a highly successful open day in conjunction with the local Higher Education College to raise awareness of GIS technology and promote courses at the college. ESRI were more than helpful despite (or cynics might say because) the fact no one in the Solomons was using ESRI products. They sent free stuff by courier due to problems getting stuff by conventional post, the resources are now at the college and hopefully will be used. Much of the stuff sent was usable without ESRI products, the sample ARCINFO files we wanted to use as examples were easily converted to Mapinfo and everyone was happy. Obviously World Wide Day is part of marketing but the Mapinfo group in the Solomons certainly benefited. Re: MI The Empire versus the metric
I must admit I've been impressed with the discussion, it's brought a smile to my face a few times, well how about the Solomon Islands distance is measured by the litre there.. i.e the number of litres of fuel you need in an outboard on a canoe to get from A to B, weather, currents and load sometimes make the same journey a different length of course, as I found out to my cost a few times I guess the bottom line is the best system to use in a place is the one that most people in that place understand, or maybe that's controversial. MI miles and kilometres
Eric UK is still miles, it's so much more logical than kilometres. Mick -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MI Workspace Prob...
Andre that error message brings back (not so) fond memories - have you changed any of the table structures? if you have that could be the problem, the "36" in the error message is the line number in the workspace file, have a look at it in a text editor and see what the variable name is, does it correspond to a field name in the table? if not there's your problem, you can edit the workspace (insert the valid field name) in the text editor and all should be well, I once had to do something similar for lots of workspaces I know very little about Lovebug etc. but I had the same problem a year or so or go so I suspect it's not related. hope this helps cheers Mick - Original Message - From: Lederer, Andre [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, May 18, 2000 4:09 PM Subject: MI Workspace Prob... Ever since the "I Love You" virus hit us, some of our workspaces are not opening. We are getting messages like... Workspacename.wor.36) Variable or field ID not defined. Could this be related to the virus somehow? Or could it be that in restoring our systems something was changed? Any Thoughts??? Re: MI Specifying scale of layout
Georges the area you want printing should be in the Map Window, then go to Layout, double click on the frame with your map in it, bottom right gives you the scale - 1cm equal to you can change the units to cm, so your scale is there hope this helps Mick - Original Message - From: SenGupta,Georges [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, May 15, 2000 9:50 AM Subject: MI Specifying scale of layout I need to print off maps from MI at a defined scale. I have not managed to get the Map-Change View-Map Scale and the Layout-Frame Object-Scale On Paper options to work together to give me (for example) 1:2500. Is there an obvious way that I have missed? Thanks for your help. Re: MI Zoom to selected records
Georges try Query find selection ths can also be used in a MapBasic programme by using "run menu command" hope this helps Mick - Original Message - From: SenGupta,Georges [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 25, 2000 11:04 AM Subject: MI Zoom to selected records Dear all, Sorry if this is obvious, but I don't have time to plough through the manual. I am looking for the MapInfo equivalent of an ArcView feature of "Zoom to selected record". I have a grid of 750 squares - searching for the correct grid square by eye mouse is very slow. Is there a facility of selecting the grid reference number on the table browser (using FInd) and zooming to that part of the map? It would save so much time. Thanks in advance. Re: MI remove street names from address
Dave try this - the same functions appear in EXCEL and MapInfo, might be easier to do in EXCEL as a series of columns assuming all the street addresses are in the same format I'd 1) get rid of any leading blank spaces using LTRIM() function 2) search for the first appearance of a blank in the remaining string. The INSTR() function will return a position we'll call it "X" for now 3) take 1 from "X" 4) use the Left$() function to return the first "X" characters no doubt there are many other ways but the above will work, in EXCEL each part could be a column with a formula in, teh final columnn should have the required answe hope this helps PS what are you doing working on Saturday Mick - Original Message - From: Dave Lagerstedt [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: mapinfo-l [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, April 08, 2000 3:25 PM Subject: MI remove street names from address I have a table with a column of street addresses such as "14963 140th St." I want to remove the "140th St" portion and be left with just "14963" in either that column or another column. Can this be done in Mapinfo or Excel? If so how?
