Re: MI What is GML and should we MapInfo-ites care?
If you want some in-depth info on GML, I would recommend OGC's site, specifically: http://www.opengis.org/techno/specs/00-029/GML.html My opinion is that we should at the very least care as interested participants in the world of GIS. The quest for GIS standards, though by no means easy, is laudable and deserves the support of those of us who, though fond of Mapinfo, see it as only part of a bigger picture. GML seems to offer functionality as both an interchange format and the potential to really streamline webmapping. My 2 cents. perhaps 90% of educational market? It can't be 90% of Utilities as Intergraph and Smallworld are very strong there - although a few issues with directors selling shares a touch early and other problems! It could be 90% of military and environment. i think it is more like 40% of actual GIS market - still extremely strong! Re: MI what is Bonne projection?
Dr Rajeev saraf wrote: > has any body heard of bonne projection. i came across it in an atlas. does mi support it. if so, > which option in projection file would do it. The Bonne projection is a "pseudo-conic" projection. It is the conic analogue of the Sinusoidal projection. (You can also consider the Sinusoidal to be a special case of the Bonne projection.) Both projections have the property of being equal-area. Unfortunately, MapInfo does not support the basic algorithm for the Bonne projection, presumably because not enough people have asked for it. The Polyconic projection will give you a similar effect but it won't be equal-area. The Albers Equal-Area Conic will be equal-area but will look even less like the Bonne projection. RE: MI what is Bonne projection?
BONNE Projection is in the family of Conic Projections. It is classified as a pseudoconic, equal area projection. Its central meridian is a straight line, all other meridians are complex curves. Scale is true at the CM and along each parallel. For details, history, usage, formulae, etc., refer to USGS Professional Paper 1395, 'Map Projections - A Working Manual' by John P. Snyder. RE: MI what is Bonne projection?
Rajeev, I noticed the other answers you have received on the list so far, and they are correct to a point. Within the apparent context of your question about a projection found in an atlas, you have your answer. However, in 19th century Europe and early to middle 20th century Middle East (and most French colonies), the Bonne Projection means something quite different. When working with Geodetic Grid systems it is an ellipsoidal implementation that is NOT the same as using the spherical equations. Geographers will occasionally use ellipsoidal Authalic latitude in thematic applications with the spherical equations. (See the late Prof. Karl Rinner in "Zeitschritt der Vermessungswessen," back in 1932 - I forgot which issue.) The February, 2000 issue of "Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing" will feature my column on Grids and Datums for the Republic of Madagascar. In that, I discuss the Bonne projection as used in Madagascar and why General Jean Laborde hated it for geodetic work. You can find other countries in past issues of my column at: http://www.asprs.org/resources.html If MI supports it, I would expect it to be the thematic spherical implementation and NOT the special ellipsoidal power series once used for geodetic National Grid systems. Re: MI what is Bonne projection?
Bonne's projection is a pseudoconical equal-area projection. The meridians are represented by concurrent curves, the parallels by concentric arcs of circles. The centre of the projection is defined as the intersection of a straight central meridian with a central parallel of length r0 = R*tan(90-lat0), where lat0 is the latitude of the central parallel. The parallels are correctly spaced along the central meridian and represented in correct length (which gives the projection the equal-area property). Transformation formulae: x = r*sin(T) y = R*cot(lat0) - r*cos(T) where T = R*longit*cos(latit) / r r = R[cot(lat0) - (latit - lat0)] lat0 is the latitude of the central parallel. R is the radius of the generating globe. (setting the equator as central parallel yields sanson's sinusoidal projection). For more information see for example: Canters, F. and H. Using a Web browser, such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, and the WHIP! plug-in provided by Autodesk, others can view your drawings via the Internet (provided you have posted them to an Internet server and the viewer has Internet access). MI What is Oracle Spatial?
What is Oracle Spatial? The product provides an integrated set of functions and procedures that enable spatial data to be stored, accessed, and analyzed quickly and efficiently in Oracle8i. This means that spatial and attribute data can now be managed in one physical database, thereby reducing processing overhead and eliminating the complexity of coordinating and synchronizing disparate sets of data. "By using Oracle8i extensible indexing features, Oracle Spatial exceeds the performance of previous releases." Oracle Spatial provides a completely open architecture for the management of spatial data within a database management system. The functionality provided by Oracle Spatial is completely integrated within the database server. Users define and manipulate spatial data through SQL and gain access to standard Oracle features such as a flexible n-tier architecture, object capabilities, robust data management utilities, and Java stored procedures. This ensures data integrity, recovery, and security features that are virtually impossible to obtain with other architectures. In addition, a new geocoding framework facilitates address matching, storage, and retrieval of geocoded spatial point data, as well as within-distance query capability, from within Oracle8i databases. With the release of Oracle8i, spatial data can be stored in relational tables or as objects -- abstract data types (ADTs). This new object data type (SDO_GEOMETRY) is supported directly by core Oracle8i engine. The use of the object relational type enables spatial data to be stored, accessed, and analyzed quickly and efficiently in an Oracle8i database. This gives application developers the facility to store all locational (geographically referenced) information within an industry standard database server without having to resort to custom-built external indexes and functions to get the performance they need. Users of spatial data have access to standard Oracle8i features, plus enhanced features such as bigger database size limits, faster backup and recovery, and Java in the database. In Spring 1999, Oracle Spatial (ver. 8.0 and 8i) became the first software company to pass OpenGIS conformance testing for "Simple Features for SQL". Oracle's commitment to standards activities is demonstrated by its active principal-level membership in the Open GIS Consortium (OGC) during the past three years. License Oracle 8i Personal Edition for $395 and get essentially all features of "Spatial Cartridge", the replacement technology for SDO, plus a JAVA database. http://www.oracle.com/database/options/spatial/index.html Do we really need SDE anymore? Yes, it does show that ESRI has a number or county governments but you as I are likely to be surprised at how well MapInfo appears to be doing.
