Re: MI-L Demand a recount!

2000-11-22 Thread Carl Schaefer

Perhaps those ArcView users simply don't know what they are
missing...and are accustomed to upgrades that appear to be
worthwhile. It is always amusing to see an ArcView user complain
about reprojecting data and then informing them that MapInfo does it
on-the-fly. How fundamental and straight forward can you get? DUH?

Though, it is also frustrating is have MapInfo give us a robust GIS
platform that is close to being "finished" only to have the latest
upgrades fizzle out and leave the users still wanting those wish-list
items from version 3.

Happy Turkey Day to all

MI-L ODBC Databases & Objects

2000-11-22 Thread Jerry E. Howard

I have not worked with ODBC databases a great deal, but am having
trouble with polylines and Polygons.

Without using something like Spatialware (limited to Informix and
Oracle) or Oracle 8I, how can I link a polygon object with a particular
ODBC record and still be able to utilize it in a Mapx Geoset and
MapXtreme/MapXSite application? A View or link table will not work with
MapXtreme (or at least I could not get it to work). If I create a
object and associate it with an ODBC record and the ODBC database has a
new record inserted in the middle of it, all objects are corrupted and
end up referring to a incorrect object. The only way I could get it to
work was to SAVE COPY AS which can create a maintenance nightmare when
ODBC data is changing daily.

I would appreciate any help someone can give me. Thanks in Advance.

Re: MI-L Demand a recount!

2000-11-22 Thread glenn

I guess I should mention a couple of things about the poll.
It was simply a poll of respondents and not a survey. Regarding the
audience, I can tell you that the majority of GeoCommunity visitors are
actually ArcView (also known as AkeView) and ArcInfo users and the
makeup closely resembles the % of marketshare held by GIS products (More
than 150,000 unique visitors to the site each month and they are not
mostly MI users). I was personally very surprised that ArcInfo 8 and
ArcIMS 3 didn't run away with the poll since I know for a fact that many
users have been quite disappointed with these product releases.

The products used in the poll were selected because users have voiced
their concerns over the product release. Perhaps ArcView 3.2 should have
been listed, however, it is my feeling that AV users are generally very
pleased with that particular release. Arc 8, on the contrary, has been
the subject of many threads on lists by frustrated users and by those
not willing to upgrade.

I think that the poll may be telling us a couple of things. Perhaps MI
users are more frustrated with the release of 6.0 or perhaps MI users
are simply more likely to jump in and voice their opinions in a poll or
survey.

Anyway, it was all in fun and the results did manage to stimulate some
conversation - the main objective!

pretty weird to me. I should of thought that you
might have included all

MI-L MI: SUMM Command Prompt.

2000-11-22 Thread Robert Crossley

Thanks to all that replied. No, the DOS suggestions still did not work for
some reason. I had tried most of them late last night before I sent the
message. The /c option to close the DOS window after the command had no
effect except I couldn't read the error, and passing a string to the Run
Program command did not work either. I remember there was a quirk in the
run program command once before that bugged me a long time ago, but its
memory is thankfully gone.

I did not try using quotes in the command, as by then the answer was to get
out of my time warp and use API.

Thanks to Trey and Martin for this suggestion, as well as all those who took
the time to remember DOS commands.

Trey's code was as follows and was adapted to work well.

TYPE SECURITY_ATTRIBUTES

Re: MI-L DXF Files

2000-11-22 Thread Uffe Kousgaard

In mapbasic it would like this (assuming you have already
opened the tables and the tables have the same fields):

insert into table1 select * from table2

insert into table1 select * from table3

insert into table1 select * from table4
etc.

Maybe you could setup a loop, if there is any system in your table
names.

If you have points/lines within the polygons, you wouldn't want to mix
those tables. The drawing of the items on a map would be rather random in terms
of what is on top - points or polygons. And there is no way to control it unless
your polygons aren't filled.

Re: MI-L MI: Dos Command

2000-11-22 Thread David L. Dennis

Robert,

What you're missing is the "/c" switch:

Run Program "command.com /c mkdir " + gMigrationDir + gConfigDIR(i).Name

As described via "command /?":

COMMAND [[drive:]path] [device] [/E:n] [/L:] [/U:nnn] [/P] [/MSG]
[/LOW] [/Y [/[C|K] command]]
   [drive:]pathSpecifies the directory containing COMMAND.COM.
device Specifies the device to use for command input and output.
/E:nSets the initial environment size to n bytes.
   (n should be between 256 and 32,768).
/L: Specifies internal buffers length (requires /P as well).
   ( should be between 128 and 1,024).
/U:nnn Specifies the input buffer length (requires /P as well).
(nnn should be between 128 and 255).
/P Makes the new Command Interpreter permanent (can't exit).
/MSGStores all error messages in memory (requires /P as well).
/LOWForces COMMAND to keep its resident data in low memory.
/Y Steps through the batch program specified by /C or /K.
/C command Executes the specified command and returns.
/K command Executes the specified command and continues running.

Try Mapinfo's Calling Area Info. It has Calling Area boundary files with a

Re: MI-L Telephone Prefix map

2000-11-22 Thread Gary Schwartz

Aaron,

You've touched onto a difficult subject in telecommunications
geography. The first 3 numbers (called the NXX) really has no
geographical component. For example, I worked in a building where
people in one office had different NXXs than the people in the office
across the hall. However, there is something known as an Exchange which
does (sort of) have a geographic component. An Exchange is a grouping
of NXXs that cover a general geographic area. The term is often
interchanged with the term Wire Center, although I believe they are
different entities. I may have this wrong, but I believe that a Wire
Center refers to a group of switches located in a Central Office
(typically a small brick building that has a definite location) that
serves one or more Exchanges.

Anyway, I believe that from a specified NXX, you can determine the
Exchange that it belongs to and relate that to a geographic region. I
know that MapInfo has a product called ExchangeInfo that includes this
geography. There are probably other vendors that also supply similar
information. If you need any more info, please let me know.

(Of course, all of this is likely to change over the next couple of
years as the telecommunications industry moves away from geographically
based phone numbers!)

Good luck,
Gary.

Hello list,
A poll we ran last week at The GeoCommunity had some interesting results. We

product release do you think was most disappointing? The choices we supplied
for answers
were:

ArcInfo 8.0
MapInfo 6.0
AutoCAD Map 2000
Caliper 4.1
ArcIMS 3.0

I thought that IMS 3 was going to top the list. What I found interesting
was that MI 6
topped the list with 50% of those responding citing MI as the most
disappointing!

More detailed results from the poll are archived at

I'd be interested in hearing a few detailed reasons from some of you MI

the biggest disappointment with this release is. If you'd like to let me

RE: MI-L MI: Dos Command

2000-11-22 Thread Martin, Christopher (WSA Telford)

Robert,

I've no idea why your code doesnt work, but if you are looking for
alternatives, you can always use the WinExec API function - this is
basically the same the Visual Basic Shell function, but is accessable to
MapBasic...

However, thinking about it further, you might as well use the
CreateDirectory() API function directly:

Declare Function CreateDirectoryEx Lib "kernel32" Alias "CreateDirectoryExA"
(ByVal lpTemplateDirectory As String, ByVal lpNewDirectory As String,
lpSecurityAttributes As Any) As Long
Declare Function RemoveDirectory Lib "kernel32" Alias "RemoveDirectoryA"
(ByVal lpPathName As String) As Long

Sub MySub()
'Create a new directory
CreateDirectoryEx "", "C:\MyDir", ByVal 0&
'remove the directory
RemoveDirectory "C:\MyDir"
End Sub

This is a simple example, and there is a lot more to it; if you want some
further web-based sources, let me know...

Re: MI-L MI survey results

2000-11-22 Thread Flavio Hendry

Hi Glenn

I think this survey just reflects the number of users of the product, such as who ever
heard about Caliper (I never did), very small base that uses the Autodesk MAP, and
very few that are into ArcIMS ... and it's cristal clear that Arc/Info and MapInfo are
widely used and therefore get the largest response (if you'd have had ArcView 3.2
in-there, I'm confident it would have won !). However it's as well correct that the
difference in exiting functionality between MI 5.5 and MI 6.0 is very close to zero

regards
Flavio
