MI-L SQL syntax

2001-08-13 Thread Roman Baca

Hello listers,
=20
Our customer has the following question about SQL syntax in the MapInfo =
Professional:
I have two tables (see example bellow) and I want aggregate one value =
and after aggregation this value subtract it from another value.
=20
Example:
1. Table CAPACITY
Type Capacity
1 100
2 200
3 300
=20
2. Table WATER_INLET
Type Quantity
11
15
18
22
11
16
37
35
=20
I need get this result:
Type CapacitySUM(Quantity)=
Difference =3D Capacity-SUM(Quantity)
1 100 21 =
 79
2 200 2=
  198
3 300 12 =
 288

(Some programs allows do that for example this way :
SELECT CAPACITY.Type, CAPACITY.Capacity, SUM(WATER_INLET.Quantity) AS =
SumQuantity, CAPACITY.Capacity - SUM(WATER_INLET.Quantity) AS Difference =
FROM CAPACITY, WATER_INLET WHERE CAPACITY.Type=3DWATER_INLET.Type GROUP =
BY WATER_INLET.Type )
=20
The question: is it possible do this in one SELECT at the MapInfo? I =
can't write Capacity-SUM(Quantity) as a select column

Thanks.

I don't know if v4.5 has an universal translator, but v5 does, thats capable of
converting DWG to TAB or MID/MIF.

Otherwise, check this link, and look at the bottom:

That might help you.

MI-L Map Catalogs

2001-08-13 Thread Ben Crane

Hi,

I have to manually create a map catalog for a database
created and maintained in FoxPro (Mayrise
Application).
I have uploaded the ODBC drivers and have the link
between the foxpro dbase and mapinfo (ie. it creates a
MI table of the FP dbase). BUT...It's not mappable, I
tried to map it but an error occurred and it asked me
to manually create one...I have the instructions on
how to do it (brief ones at that), but I am still
unsure and don't want to start doing something that I
don't have 100% knowledge about...anyone who knows how
to create a MI Map Catalog please reply...treat me as
a complete novice...

Sorry Cameron. I have had a look and found that the option is only available

Hello,

As a delphi programmer I figure it's the cat's pyjamas as well, but I'm not
going to get in any spitting matches about which is better. The evidence
seems to be that in the hands of a competent programmer, Delphi can be just
as fast as _any_ C++ compiler. For some empirical evidence go to Jake's
Code Effficiency challenge ( http://home.xnet.com/~johnjac/JCEC.htm#JCEC ),
in all of the challenges there VC++ narrowly beat out Delphi, BCB was
generally slower than either. For those of us who aren't gods of
programming, Delphi is a much better alternative as it is significantly
easier to learn and master. And there is a fantastic user community for
support.

That's just my $0.02.

cheers

MI-L MI Truncates Lat/Lons on Import

2001-08-13 Thread Greg Grant

My company conducts real estate market feasibility, primarily for
multifamily development and we are trying to establish a system to use GPS
to do our apartment maps using MapInfo and Access. We have established a
process to get lat/lons from the handheld GPS directly into Access, which we
use for our apartment analysis and data aggregation. Because the Access DB
is so large, we would prefer not to have our GIS specialist not work
directly with this large database, but rather a subset of the data
specifically for each project we use. In Access, the lat/lons are defined
as Number, Double, with 10 decimal places.

Our database programmer has designed an export procedure, but we have two
problems:

1) if he exports it as a comma delimited file for import into MapInfo, the
lat/lons are imported as a character field, so our GIS specialist has to
save a copy of the file, open the copy and then change the field type using
Table--Maintenance in order to generate the points.

2) if he exports it from Access as an Excel file, Excel seems to natively
recognize the fields with only 2 decimal places, despite the definition in
Access. Even if we change the number format to 10 decimal places in Access,
when we import this table into MapInfo, MI truncates the lat/lons to three
decimal places, and even then in a seemingly random manner (sometimes there
are only 2 decimal places).

Our goal is to pushbutton this as much as possible so that all our GIS
specialist has to do is open the file in MI and generate the points. What
are we doing wrong here?

Switching from D.M.S to UTM
In a table of sampling points that I have created on a map, I would like to
display the coordinates in UTM rather than in Degrees, Minutes seconds, I
have created the Northing and Easting fields but every time I do the update
column with Centroidx and Centroidy expressions I end up with a coordinate
that is displayed in Degrees. I have checked the projection, (UTM zone 11)
and the map options displays the coordinates in meters. I could type in the
coordinates but that is not an option I want to pursue.

Re: MI-L Switching from D.M.S to UTM

Steve,
The easiest way I can think of to do this would be to open the MapBasic
Window (Options -> Show MapBasic Window), and type the following:

Set CoordSys Earth Projection 8, 104, 7, -117, 0, 0.9996, 5, 0

and hit enter. Run your Update Column, and once you're done, you'll
probably want to change it back.

Set CoordSys Earth Projection 1, 0

Hello Marc,

I took a quick look at the Code Efficiency challenge site and you're
right - it's just splitting hairs.

Trey did reply to me saying that his comments were just his opinion and
that he meant 0.99 - 1.5 times performance improvements with Delphi.
Opinions are fine but I think it's important not to mislead the list.
Some may make decisions on a strong conviction which appears to be fact.

I think it's far more interesting to argue about pronunciation: Dell-Fi

MI-L I see one point

2001-08-13 Thread Straus, Ian

This message is in MIME format. Since your mail reader does not understand
this format, some or all of this message may not be legible.

Obvously something is badly wrong here. Do you have any idea what can be
wrong?

I have committed the sin of believing the manual bears any relation to the
software.

I have data in longitude / latitude (it's locations of paratransit vehicles
at about 9AM).
I extracted it in the form of an Excel file, and then imported it into
Mapinfo 5.5 in accord with the instructions on page 118 of the User's Guide
(chapter 8: Putting your data on a map > Creating points from an Excel or
Lotus table). I did check to ensure the columns are numeric (they say
"floating"). I saved as a new file name [July_5_9Am_v_loc_lat_long.TAB] ,
mappable. The projection is longitude / latitude. I imported with a
multiplier of 1.

My problem: Although I have 219 points, when I use "New map window" to look
at the browser file as a map, I see only one point. I can zoom in until the
scale in 1 inch = 0.1 mile, or out until the scale is 1 inch = 5 miles, and
it's still only one point.
In the original data, these locations are spread out over about half a
degree in both latitude and longitude, and I expect that if creating points
has gone correctly, I will see several points.

I attach a look at the browser window.

MI-L Grid Handler and Millenium.

2001-08-13 Thread Jacques Paris

I have just discovered after having been stumped for a while that Grid
Engine code based migrid.dll functions are inoperative under Millenium. The
essential GE_OpenGrid function will return a grid handle of Zero, which
means no good. Even MBX applications compiled with MI 6.0 are dead wood
under Millenium.

It seems that no compatibility check has ever been carried out by MI between
their products and Millenium.

I hope to no one to experience that feeling of sheer frustration, but I am
pretty sure that some among you (as few as possible I hope) have had such an
experience and would share it, at least with me.

Have search the list database for sample code but haven't located any that =
would work for me. I am running MI & MB 6.5

The DSN would already exist. In my case it would be called BP-primary.dsn

Hope somebody can spare the time to help out with a piece of sample code

MI-L SDTS2DEM Fixed!!

2001-08-13 Thread Cameron Crum

Just to let everyone who was thrown for a loop with the new SDTS format
not working with the old Sol Katz translator, it has been fixed! You can
get the new translator at

http://www.cs.arizona.edu/topovista/sdts2dem.html

It puts the SDTS files back into Native format. It doesn't "chop" the
files like the old translator, but you can still chop them with the chop
routine if you need to. Just thought everyone might like to know. I'm
sure the USGS won't be too happy to hear this and they'll probably
change the format again just to thwart us, but for now we can get the
data in something useable. Not being a C programmer I have been
struggling with trying to correct this code for the last two weeks, but
Gregg Townsend beat me to the punch, thank God. I might never have
figured it out.

Take it easy.

RE: MI-L ODBC & MB

2001-08-13 Thread Søren Breddam

Hi Terry,
I've had success with the MB window method. It requires a little trick and
will reveal whats behind the variables that occurs with the normal method.
You open an ODBC table and uncheck the boxes in the save dialog (don't link
the table - register it instead).
Then your MB window shows all the information for your program. You'll just
have to extract it and put it into :
Server Link Table
SQLQuery
Using ConnectionString
Toolkit Toolkitname
Into TableName
[ File FileSpec]
[ ReadOnly ]
Try it out!
