Re: MI-L Thematic Maps Remove Borders

2005-02-21 Thread Jaromir Svasta
You can do the following:
In the "Modify Thematic Map" dialog click "Style" and check "Color" in the
"Apply" group;
In the the base table's (not thematic) "Display Options" dialog check
"Style override" and make sure that the border style is set to "none".
Both dialogs are accesible from the Layer control.

Hope this helps.

In your mapbasic install folders there should be a folder called ICONDEMO.
Build that .mbx from the .mb and run it then you can graphically see what
all the icons are and their numbers.

MI-L New found feature using Ultra Edit for your Mapbasic Editor

2005-02-21 Thread David Reid
Greetings List,

This may be old news to some, but I just discovered it myself and thought it
was handy as a shirt pocket.

As you may alread know, you can tweak Ultra Edit in many ways, one is adding
Help files to the Ultra Edit Help menu, nothing new, I added my Mapbasic
help file long ago. But tonight, by accedent, kinda like the old TV
commercial of the guys who cramed their chocolate bar into a jar of peanut
butter... Looking for assistance in writing a new mbx, I clicked on the Help
menu and chose Mapbasic as usual. The only difference, I had a line of code
selected, a "set style" statement. When I clicked on the help file, the
Mapbasic Help file opened to the "Set Style Statement" of the Mapbasic Help
file.

Now that's just smart as a thermos bottle! Chalk another one up for Ultra
Edit.

As the culprit behind the statement, I need to ask you whether this is your
personal experience as a super user, or an opinion
ordinary users have given you ?

My point wasn't that it was a bad feature - for super users - on the contrary.
I personally think it's a neat thing with many
applications. But I fear this sentiment isn't shared by too many ordinary
users. And the majority of data I've seen at multiple
customers is de-facto single topology.

Ahh the never ending debate, I used the ESRI products at uni and found
them excellent to conduct my research and present my results
graphically, I am now in the workforce and use MI extensively - and have
found it good enough to do my work easily and efficiently.

Neither is technically better or worse, or may I say easier to learn.
ESRI's base packages are pretty simple, it's the weird and wonderful
extensions that get people worried (network analyst any1?).

One comment in this string of emails I would like to pick up on.

>Handy maybe, but mixed topography tables usually throw MapInfo users
into a fit. Single topology tables is not a severe limitation,
and I'll wager that the vast majority of MapInfo tables are single
topology anyway.

Absolutely incorrect in my experience, this excellent MapInfo feature
has allowed me to combine open space areas (turf, sports fields) with
infrastructure data (points - lights, litter bins etc) - on many
occasions this has proven to be the difference between going ahead with
our surveillance and not. I would estimate that 75% of all of our civil
spatial data has a mixed topology - something I would assume would be
universal across local government institutions.

Each has their Positives and negatives Arc+ = Layouts, high end
advanced analysis, X tools! Arc- = Cost, compartment syndrome. MI+ =
stand alone package, cost, universal translator, labelling ! MI- =
printing, map creation.

Just my opinion as a humble end user people - thanks for letting me
waste my morning whilst looking like im working

Sorry I should have put that. The ESRI systems we currently use here are
3.X
- 8.3 and we will be getting upgrades to v.9 pretty soon but as of yet I
haven't had any experience with it other than demoing it to see if we
wanted
to upgrade some of our 8.3 stuff to v.9. Our current MapInfo versions
are
v.5 - v.7.8. I only have one user with 7.8 though the bulk of them are
still
running 6.5. So basically the user comparasons are based on MapInfo 6.5
against ESRI 8.3 because my dual users seem to most often have this
setup on
their machines as far as versions go.

I agree. I have to teach new users here. MapInfo is very intuitive for
Windows users. It functions very much like a Windows application. ESRI
functions like a Unix application. We have both types of users here and
people who are used to Unix seem to pick up ESRI tools faster than those
who are used to Windows only.

MapInfo also wraps a lot of functionality into one touch buttons and
walk through dialogs such as the afore mentioned "update column". I mean
I suppose you could break it down by Windows UI design guidelines and
see all the places ESRI breaks from that.

One of the really hard things for people to get used to is the palette
style tool sets which exist outside the main UI. Where you have your
palette such as ArcToolBox and you use it's functions on the data you
are working on in your editor. This is completely foreign to most
Windows users. In ways like this it functions

RE: MI-L creating contours

2005-02-21 Thread David Ward
Hi Matthew:

I have two suggestions: Vertical Mapper or SurfLink and Surfer.

You could pick up a copy of Vertical Mapper for under $1,200 US.
(ttp://www.mapmart.com/Software/MapInfo/MapInfoSoftware5.htm)

If you are interested in using advanced gridding/contouring features, and
breaklines/fault lines, there is Surfer -- a contouring program popular in
the scientific community (Golden Software http://www.goldensoftware.com).

There is a MapInfo add-on, SurfLink
(http://www.certaintech.com/surflinkmi.asp) to connect MapInfo and Surfer.
It is quite easy to use, and their techsupport has been great. You'll get
more features at less cost ($525 and $295).

- vertical mapper is pretty limited when it comes to complex contouring

- best of all is Engage 3D (see www.encom.com.au). real 3d stuff.
however a bit more expensive ...

MI-L Pie chart thematic question

2005-02-21 Thread Josh Forsythe
I have a table with rows for each of the states, and about 70 wireless
carriers as columns. Each of the states has a number of minutes per
carrier, and of course many of the values in the table are 0. Most
states only have 3-4 carriers registering minutes, but in order to
include all minutes from all states, we need about 70 carriers.

My problem is this: I try to add all 70 carriers as options for the
thematic pie chart, but it only allows me to add some number much
smaller than 70, getting to about the Es, before graying out the
available columns side of the ledger. Is there a hard-coded upper limit
to the number of fields in a pie chart that I don't know about?

Thanks for any help,

Josh

Hi Daniel,

I think integrated security is still a Microsoft only technology, so Oracle
most likely won't have support for it.

However, I think it's possible to omit the password and possibly the username
from the connection string in the TAB file, which will
make MapInfo prompt you for it.

If you need to open without prompt but with a hidden password, you'll need to
have an application open the connection for you.

RE: MI-L Transparency

2005-02-21 Thread Ryan Morgan, Aerials Express
One can do this by saving the layers you want transparent in the layout
window, as a .tiff (or I suppose .jpg) opening it in Photoshop, and
adjusting the opacity of those layers over a master. The master should also
be a .tiff or .jpg at the same size and scale. If you are using Aerial
Photography, you could also open the same photography set twice, set the
transparency of one of the sets to say 50%, and move it above all of the
other layers in the layer control. This has the same effect.

Hope this helps!

column. This table will not have any spatial data, just textual.

Cheers,

MI-L 'opened exclusively' problem with Access 2003

2005-02-21 Thread Chris Prescott

I open some tables from an Access 2003 database in MapInfo (6.5) without any
problems.

If I then go and try to start my Access 2003 application I get the following
error:
"Microsoft Office Access can't open the database because it is missing,
or opened exclusively by another user."

The only other user is MapInfo. The ODBC driver being used does not have the
'Exclusive' option checked and the default open mode in the database is set to
shared. I also get this message if I open a table from Access using 'File >
Open Table' and selecting MS Access as the file type.

Any clues as to how I can operate both applications at the same time.
Closing MapInfo and then opening the Access database is not an option.

Thanks in advance for any help.

RE: MI-L 'opened exclusively' problem with Access 2003

2005-02-21 Thread Simmonds, Ashley (DTUP)
heya chris, just checked mine and we have version 7.0 here now, but I can't
even seem to find an ODBC drivery thing anywhere, however I can select MDB
as a file type directly from the file-open dialog. I guess 7.0 supports
access natively through OLEDB or something. dunno.

anyhoo, are you able to open multiple instances of MI pointing at the db?

one of the other annoying things I've come across with access (not related
to MI) is that when logged in as someone else, it sets the "owner" of the
mdb file to the last person who closed it. something about the
meta-information of the file is then saved in that user's TEMP directory,
meaning anyone else who logs on and tries to open the file gets the dreaded
"database can't be found" deal to it.

what I'm getting at is that if MI is opened through a different user/account
to the user opening access, that temp data will not be readable by them. to
get around this I had our I.T. section set a common and openly
readable/writable %TEMP% directory so it didn't matter who was playing in
it.

may not be relevant to your stuff, but it's an annoying problem that took me
years to figger out.

RE: MI-L 'opened exclusively' problem with Access 2003

2005-02-21 Thread Chris Prescott

Christopher Prescott

Thanks Ash,

I can open as many instances of MI (with my Access table open) as like without
any problems but when I then try to open Access I get locked out.

This is what I'm trying to do. In my MapBasic app. I have several Access
tables open retrieving data from the Access db. My MB app. lets me select a
MapInfo object and then(using it's ID) it starts up the Access application,
opens a particular form and goes to the relevant record. This part is failing
since I get locked out of Access.

HOWEVER, in saying this I may have found a work around. If I issue a 'Server
Disconnect' statement before my app. sarts Access it works correctly - except
for one problem. For some reason that I am yet to figure out, the buttons on
my custom buttonpad all become disadbled - and I cannot enable them. This also
occurs if I use the 'File > Close DBMD Connection..' option. If I open a new
DBMS connection my button pad comes active again. I don't know what the link
is.

Chris.

MI-L S/W to Merge USGS DOQs

2005-02-21 Thread Frank Aaron (TX/EUS)
Hi,

Does anyone know of a free utility that would allow one to merge several
individual USGS Digital Orthophoto Quadrangle (DOQs - 1m
resolution) into one digital map to represent an entire state? I was hoping to
take all of the tiles for the state of AZ and merge them
into a single file thus preventing one from having to load 100's of tiles each
time. Best regards,

Grid Analyser can be seen as a cheaper alternative to Vertical Mapper
since it has most of its functionality. Check it out at www.terris.sk.

MI-L Deletion of Duplicate Objects. The Challenge

Hi List

This small application (MB4.0) took 20 minutes to write and test.

After all the comments about mapbasic and .net, it would be interesting
to see how long it takes to write a similar program in .net (or similar)
and what versions of MI it will then work.
