[MI-L] MI-L Tool for Batch Opening Large Amount of Tab Files
Hello Listers, I have a massive amount of tab files (from a landline dataset). Which I would like to open to create a base map. However when I highlight all the files to open on the current map, MapInfo does nothing. If I select say 100 of the files to open, then they will open fine but as there are thousands it would take along time to open them this way. Has anyone come across this problem before? Are there any tools that will systematically open a folder full of tab files until they are all open? Any help would as always be very much appreciated. RE: [MI-L] MI-L Tool for Batch Opening Large Amount of Tab Files
John, I think there is an upper limit to how many tables you can open at a time. It might be 255, but I'm not sure. I can see two solutions: 1. Make a seamless table that opens a number or all the tables. You do of course have to open the tables once to create the seamless table and the tables need to have the same table structure. 2.Write a Mapbasic application that opens all tables in a folder Peter Horsbøll Møller GIS Developer, MTM Geographical Information IT COWI A/S Odensevej 95 DK-5260 Odense S. Ang. [MI-L] MI-L Tool for Batch Opening Large Amount of Tab Files
Hi John! I seem to recall that there is a limit on how many tab files can be displayed in a mapper,or open in MapInfo at the same time. Perhaps it's in the Wiki? Try opening your tab files with no view to begin with, gradually increasing the number of files until it breaks. Then try adding the number you can open to one mapper window, in the same way and see how far you can get. But on the whole, I really think you should reconsider your database design. What can be the rationale to use thousands of tab files for a base map? Because even if you could open and display so many files, their use as a base map would be completely impractical simply beacuse of the sheer number of files involved. Re: [MI-L] Strangely Visible Outlines.
Andy, I've experienced this and if I've interpreted your question correctly, you will be using version 8? The solution is described below and was sent to me by MapInfo support Europe. " In version 8.0 of MapInfo Professional we enhanced our support for bivariate thematic maps and introduced the option to 'Replace Layer Styles'. When this option is selected the layer(s) under the thematic map are not drawn, if this option is checked the underlying layer is drawn regardless of whether it is set to visible or not in the Layer Control. Therefore to get your layer to display correctly, go to Options Preferences Map Window and check the option to 'Draw layers under themes'. This will then ensure that the 'Replace layer styles' option in the thematic options is unselected. Therefore when you turn off your base layer only your thematic map is displayed." [MI-L] RE: Disappearing Geosoft Grids
Yvonne, Is there a pink check in your layer control under the Geosoft layer for Visibility? If so, Automatic Zoom Layering is turning off the grid when it is at such a fine detail that it you can not distinguish the resolution and it will take much longer to redraw. You can turn off this option from the Display button in the layer control or turn off the automatic feature under the menu Options Preferences Map Window. I'm using the Geosoft plug-in, and when I zoom in to the image (i.e. at actual size) I have no problems viewing the grid. However when I zoom to the full extent of the layout the grid disappears. Sometimes when I print, the grid reappears, but more often than not the layout does not print with the grid. I can seem to get around the problem by opening up a new map window and displaying the grid, although this can be a hassle when there's a lot of info to recreate (merely cloning the map window does not work). Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks, Yvonne Bowen, GIS Technician Strongbow Exploration Inc. Suite 800-625 Howe St Vancouver, B.C. [MI-L] UTM Zone 29N - Exporting from Geosoft to MapInfo
Listers, I am having some trouble exporting images from Geosoft as MapInfo tiffs. Usually when I do this the tiff comes into MapInfo as a registered image in the same coordinate system as Geosoft. The Geosoft data is in UTM 29N but when I bring the image into MapInfo it plots approx 300km east of its true position. My suspicion is that there may be a discrepancy between Geosoft UTM 29N and the MapInfo version or possibly the local datum. Has anyone come across this before or can anyone help me with this problem? Re: [MI-L] MI-L Tool for Batch Opening Large Amount of Tab Files
Hi John This is not the best way to cope with Landline, or any other large dataset. With both CAD and GIS systems it is best to have all similar objects such as roads on one single layer, all buildings on another single layer etc etc. Thus your dataset could reduce to the 63 layers that Landline contains or less if you want to combine some features like vegetation to a single layer. Most translators for Landline data and its replacement MasterMap would translate the data this way including our MapNTF and MapGML products. As you must have licensing to use this data you will presumably have access to the original NTF data. There is an evaluation copy of MapNTF on our website. By combining objects in such a fashion you can easily turn on and off visibility of a single set of features. You can also carry out text searches on the text layers. Further performance will be vastly better as only data that hits the screen will be read whereas the approach you are trying will need to open every file. Windows itself has a limit to how may files cab be opened at one time, and bear in mind MapInfo layers are made up of four files, and if indexed five files. RE: [MI-L] MapInfo versus Oracle Area
Title: MapInfo versus Oracle Area Robert, Im not really saying anything about the correct area of a shape, but the response from Oracle points to a difference in the way the systems perform computations. Having said that, it does seem that MapInfo is possibly taking something of a short-cut in area calculation spherical trig is easier that ellipsoidal trig. I may be wrong but I think the area of similar dimensioned objects on the surface of an ellipse varies according to where on that ellipse they are situated the curvier bit or the flatter bit. According to my rudimentary knowledge of ellipsoidal geometry they may even vary according to the shape and orientation of the object. All this may be at play in the discrepency you have found between total area and sum of constituent parts area. If you would like to forward me some simple sample data off-list (that shows the discrepancy), I would be happy to do a comparison of results between the systems. Cheers David -Original Message- From: Robert Crossley [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, 4 April 2006 2:19 PM To: Llewellyn, David Cc: mapinfo-l@lists.directionsmag.com Subject: RE: [MI-L] MapInfo versus Oracle Area David, Thanks for your explanation. But now I am confused. Are you saying that the correct answer for the area of a one km square piece of ground is 0.997 sq km? This is probably related to the issue that I had a problem with, in that if you split the 1 km square polygon, calculated the proportion of the original area covered by each piece, and then summed up the proportion of those areas, you would expect to get 1, but actually got 0.997. To a surveyor this may make sense. R From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Llewellyn, David Sent: 04 April 2006 11:31 To: MapInfo-L@lists.directionsmag.com Subject: [MI-L] MapInfo versus Oracle Area Dear List, A response you may find interesting regarding a question I had earlier about different areas being reported by MapInfo and Oracle Spatial: My original question related to the area being reported for a Mapinfo table (Lat/Long GDA94) containing a single square shaped polygon of 1km sides centred at 141 degrees East, 22 degrees South. In MapInfo the Area() or SphericalArea() function applied to this object returns: 0.69 square kilometres. After loading the table to Oracle Spatial and running the following SQL+ query the area returned is as shown: SELECT A.ID, SDO_GEOM.SDO_AREA(A.GEOLOC, 0.001, 'UNIT=SQ_KM') FROM TEST1 A ID SDO_GEOM.SDO_AREA(A.GEOLOC,0.001,'UNIT=SQ_KM') --- -- 0 .997368877 The Oracle area is significantly smaller than the MapInfo area. Why? The following response was provided by a member of the Oracle Spatial development team: Oracle's result is smaller than the MapInfo result by a factor of .997. This is precisely the ratio expected if MapInfo is returning spherical area using the authalic sphere for this GRS80 ellipsoid. This authalic sphere has radius 6371007 meters. The Oracle result is an ellipsoidal area, corrected for meridional and prime normal radii of curvature at the average location of the polygon. At -22 degrees latitude ( gleaned from an earlier post), this ellipsoidal correction is precisely a factor of .997 Best regards, David Llewellyn ***This Email, together with any attachments is intended for the addressee only.
