I have never tried to connect from MapInfo directly to an AS/400 with
IBM Client Access. I use Microsoft Access & IBM Client Access to
connect to an AS/400. In MS Access I save the data into a linked dbf
file, and then I open the dbf in MapInfo. You can even set it up as a
script, or batch file, to run every night. Not pretty, but it's proven
to be quite reliable for many years now.

You are doing it exactly right. Welcome to the list.

Ian,
We have a preference for open source stuff that operates over the web as
our
team is geographically spread, preferably php/ My SQL or Postgress. Both
of
our choices use a web server as its repository, allowing us to work
(although I am not so sure about Subversion).
We are using subversion for version control, although I haven't really
started using it as much as I should (I still like to have sub directories
with previous versions and code - but I largely work alone). My
programmers have been using it and are impressed. Its TortoiseSVN windows
interface makes it all pretty simple. We can use the same product for all
the programming platforms and documents. Its even accessible over the web
if you install it on a web server.

For bug reporting/ ticketing, have a look at zero to one. We're only
getting up to speed on it now, but my old partner uses this extensively and
while its simple, it does the job. We're also looking at a to do list
manager, and while zero to one can be made to do it, it is not
intrinsically
a project management tool. I would be interested in your findings on
options for combined bug control/ project management/ Timesheet? Tool.

Subject: [MI-L] Off-Topic (just a little): Software Version Control

I have been looking at version control software for managing our MapBasic
(and other) development code. And I have a few questions:

- What are other people using?
- Do you worry about version control?
- How do you manage bug reports?
- How many developers work on the same project? - We normally only have 2.
- Any comments about version control (the good, the bad, and the ugly)?

Cheers Ian

Re: [MI-L] File Types

2006-05-03 Thread Ian Robertson

Andrew,

I think that the CRV extension is used by Cities Revealed (formerly GeoInformation) in the supply of their aerial imagery. The data is actually in SID format. Change the extension of a file to *.sid and MapInfo will recognise it.

The CRV version is needed for their free viewing software.

I suspect that the SDW files provide georeferencing information in the same way that JGW does for JPG images.

Do you not have any documentation on the subject? If not have a look at:
http://www.citiesrevealed.com/aware/aware_fr.htm

[MI-L] SUM: MapBasic StdCall DLL usage

2006-05-03 Thread Bill Thoen
Yesterday I asked how to code a C function in a DLL that returns a
"pointer to void" (void *) value for a MapBasic application. The answer
is that any pointer is just a 32-bit integer and its value is the
address of whatever structure it points to, so you use an Integer in
MapBasic and pass it ByVal to subsequent routines in the DLL that need it.

Thanks for the help!

RE: [MI-L] Summing up areas of several layers, exclusive of overlap

2006-05-03 Thread Peter Horsbøll Møller
Nathan,

I think you should go in a different direction.
Way not combining all the records in your tables into one table. Then you can
select all records and combine them into one single object
(Unless the number of nodes gets to big ...)

And finally you can do an areacalculation of this single object.

You could also insert one layer at a time into the new table and for each new
layer you want to insert, you first select everything from the new table, set
this as target, then you select everything from the layer to insert and do an
erase. Now every part of the objects in the new layer tha overlap any part of
the objects in the layer to insert will be deleted. Finally you insert the
records from the layer into the new layer.

Again you finish by doing an area calcualtion, this time by Selecting
"Sum(CartesianArea(OBJ, "sq m")" or Sum(Area(OBJ, "sq m"), depending on your
coordsys

Subject: [MI-L] Summing up areas of several layers, exclusive of overlap

Hiya,

I've got a nice task of adding up the areas of several layers excluding
multiple counts of those polygons that overlap.
In other words...
I need to get the cumulative sum of all the areas of features in several
layers, but not counting twice those layers that overlap.

I imagine that I can do it with a combination of the SQL functions of CASE and
SUM and AREA and the MapInfo/Spatialware commands of INTERSECTS and ENTIRELY
WITHIN...

But, I thought I'd see if anyone has any other ideas or anything I can base
things on.
One problem I can initially see is that how do you seperate into two areas the
two parts of a polygon that lie inside and outside of another. And the CASE
conditional must be repeated in a quite a complex way when dealing with about
six layers.

Thanks for any pointers, Nathan
