RE: [MI-L] Java vs .NET?

2006-06-21 Thread Jakob Lanstorp

As you state if portable
applications are important Java would be a good solution. .NET has a linux
framework call Mono, but I have no experience with it. As to future MapInfo
developer products I think that specially web services will be a central issue
and there both Java and .NET would be fine here. With .NET you might be
closer to the future MapInfo.NET than Java, because it is based on MapXtreme
2005 .NET. MapXtreme .NET is the most successful developer product
presently from MapInfo. The latest .NET 2.0 framewotrk and Visual Studio 2005 is
a very nice peace of work. I have not much experience with Java IDE, but they
are not close to that. You can get the Express (free) version of .NET SDK and
Visual Studio so all developers in your organisation might won't need full
featured Visual Studios at once. Don't forget to check out "Click Once" a .NET
smartclient to match Java applets.

Also there is this very nice
site: http://www.learnvisualstudio.net/ where
a guy call Bob Tahor has tons of videos on .NET development that could make my
grand mother a developer in no time

For some reason Java is bigger in the US
and .NET in Europe (at least last time I heard). Anyway I will surely go
for .NET where your VB and MapBasic experience could make it a easier transfer,
but at the bottom level it might be one of those religious question
:).

This post made me really smile so
hopefully you all can at least see why. Mr. Simmonds says:  haven't used it for maybe the
last 2 updates of MI so maybe it's gone... Gone? If there is
something that we can easily defend in terms of MapInfo Professional and
MapBasic, is that we never take out a built in function or command!   We
even have a few functions that were changed between the first and second
versions (1992) but the old ones were left in for compatibility with special
translation code. Can any of you long timers identify these? There are 8
functions that now have new names but if our code sees that we are running a
version 1 .MBX (anyone got one for testing?) we translate those functions into
the new names. Sincerely with a
smile! Eric Blasenheim MapInfo Corporation Mail List:mapinfo-l-bounces

Hi Allan,

Two suggestions:

1. Try to do a Save As to make sure the data i stored in a "true" MapInfo
TAB file.
2. If that doesn't help, open the TAB file in a text editor and change
the version to 300.

I would think that you need to do the second suggestion. Please note that
having large objects or other "newer" features in the table might be a problem,
so make a copy of the table, before doing this experiment

Title: Wrong Subject on last one: Spatial Query

Christine,

I'm sure there are a number of ways to do this. Here is
mine

1. Make sure that your table contains a column with a unique ID. You
could use ROWID to update a numerical column.
2. Use Table > Buffer to create a new table of buffers around your
points

3. Add a column to hold the number of points, let us call it
NUMPOINTS4. Using Table > Update Column you can now
update you table of buffers with the number of points that fall within each
buffer.
    Update Table "Buffer"
    Column "NUMPOINTS"
    Get Values From Table "Points"
Where OBJ in Buffer Table "Contains" OBJ in Points
Table
    Calculate Value "Count(*)"
4. Now do a SQL Select:
    Select "*"
    From "Points"
Where "ID In (Select ID from Buffers Where NUMPOINTS >
10"

I'm not sure if you
want to select the points where there are 10 or more points within .5 km
including the point or excl the point. But that should just be a question of
comparing NUMPOINTS to 10 or 11.

RE: [MI-L] Tetrahedral projection

2006-06-21 Thread Spencer Simpson
"Tetrahedral projection" can mean one of two different things:

1. A computer graphics technique for rendering solid 3D objects on a 2d
screen. The solid objects are broken into individual tetrahedrons and each
tetrahedron is projected onto the screen.

2. A multisuperficial map projection. You can nest the Earth inside a
polyhedron, project the Earth's surface onto the polyhedron and then unroll
it. In practice, you strategically position several gnomonic projections
and trim them to fit together as the faces of the polyhedron. The most
famous of these is Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion Map, which uses an
icosahedron, but it will work with a tetrahedron.

For the latter, which is what I suspect you actually mean, I found the

You've probably already hit this if you've been Googling but, an example is

Have you tried searching "tetrahedric" instead of "tetrahedral"?

Hello Simon,
Bartholomew's Projection comes pretty close, but it is not a true polyhedron.
You've probably already hit this if you've been Googling but, an example is
shown on this page:
http://www.progonos.com/furuti/MapProj/Normal/ProjInt/ProjStar/projStar.html

Have you tried searching "tetrahedric" instead of "tetrahedral"?

RE: [MI-L] Importing Lidar data

2006-06-21 Thread Gilbert Haché

I know that FME from SAFE is looking into
it –seen comments from the FME user group that since users are requesting
it, they will look into adding this in their package. I don’t think it’s
available yet. You could check on their web site or ask them the status of that
function at www.safe.com

Also, AmberCore (developers who were from
Northwood the original group who made Vertical Mapper -) has made some kind a
tool to do so. I talked to them a few weeks ago. Not sure how it’s done,
if you have to create the file for one of their products and afterward export
in Mapinfo… Can transform millions of points in minutes. A note, won’t
be cheap!

Hope this help

RE: [MI-L] Extracting coordinates of the end points of a line

2006-06-21 Thread Eric_Blasenheim

This post made me really smile so hopefully
you all can at least see why. Mr. Simmonds says:

 haven't used
it for maybe the last 2 updates of MI so maybe it's gone...

Gone? If there is something that we
can easily defend in terms of MapInfo Professional and MapBasic, is that
we never take out a built in function or command!   We even have a
few functions that were changed between the first and second versions (1992)
but the old ones were left in for compatibility with special translation
code. Can any of you long timers identify these? There are 8 functions
that now have new names but if our code sees that we are running a version
1 .MBX (anyone got one for testing?) we translate those functions into
the new names.

Sincerely with a smile!

RE: [MI-L] OT - DiaBuilder2000 File Association Problem

2006-06-21 Thread SCISOFT

All

Omitted the attached image
this time (much too large).

Using file associations
in Windows is not the greatest fun.

Rather than associate a
file extension - .PRJ is used by much more than MapInfo, DiaBuilder, ESRI, and
almost every software coding IDE (Integrated Development Interface) - the trick
is to create a "Send To" job that works when you use the context menu
in Windows Explorer. The context menu (of anything) is when you right-click
with your mousething.

Now, writing a Windows
Shell Extension like a SendTo extension is a bit tricky, but fortunately all
you really need to do is to create a shortcut - or even an MSDOS batch file
(remember them?), and put it into the SendTo folder for the user (or Default
User).

For example, the use of
regsvr32.exe to register and unregister ActiveX components (etc) can be made a
simple operation, by creating a batch file containing just this:

  regsvr32 %1

(since there is always a
Windows PATH set to the location of regsvr32.exe, which is %windir%\system32\ -
ie, C:\WINDOWS\system32\ )

The SendTo folder that I
am using on my computer is

  C:\Documents
and Settings\Admin\SendTo\

I’m currently
logged in as a user with administrative permissions. AFAIK, an XP system that
is locked down with minimal permissions (like Bill's) should allow this to work
OK. There is a SendTo folder in \Default User\ - but not in \All Users\

Create a shortcut to
DiaBuilder2000 (right-click, Create Shortcut on my machine), then edit that
shortcut (right-click, Properties). Change the Target textbox by adding a
space, then %1 –

eg, C:\MyStuff\DiaBuilder2000.exe
%1

Give the shortcut a nice
recognizable name, so that you know what’s going to happen when you
invoke it by selecting your .PRJ file and right-clicking and choosing the
SendTo submenu.

Then, dump that shortcut
into the appropriate \SendTo\ folder. I don’t Trey’s stuff
installed on this machine, so this filename may be wrong.

Anyway, try it. At worst,
set admin privileges to get the thing working then change back to your
locked-down situation and see if it is still functional.

Subject: Re: [MI-L] OT - DiaBuilder2000 File Association Problem

XP does have the "open with" option, and
that's what I'm trying. In the

"Open With" dialog box Diabuilder2000 is not
listed among the possibilities

and when I try "Browse" and navigate to and
click on DiaBuilder2000.exe,

nothing happens.  This is not the case when I use
my administrator acount.

When I check the security settings on
DiaBuilder2000.exe my normal

privilege account has full access to this file, but I
can't seem to get

!$*%ing Windows to let me associate DiaBuilder2000.exe
with *.prj files

from this account.

What's even more irritating is that from a Google for
"Windows file

association" I've found lots of "how
to's" explaining how to use the

Windows file association feature from Windows
Explorer, but nothing

about this problem.

If somebody could recommend a good Windows XP Problems
mailing list where I

could ask about this, that might be helpful too,
because I think this is

more a Windows issue than a DiaBuilder2000 or MapInfo
problem.
