Hi Aaron,
Are you sure that the symbol is the same spec as the existing bitmap symbols
i.e. 1x1cm 16 bit.

Subject: MI-L Custom Symbols
Date: Wed, 30 Mar 2005 16:58:47 +0100

Hello All,
I just added a new bmp symbol to my custom symbol folder, then back in
MapInfo I clicked on Layer control - Display options - custom symbols, at
this point I clicked on Reload to update the custom symbol I just
added.
This did not work as I expected, as all the previously listed custom
symbols
disappeared from the drop down Symbol style box, except for the Ambulance
and the N. All the symbols are still located in the custom symbol folder,
but they are not showing in MapInfo.

Does anyone know how I will go about getting them back into MapInfo?
Thanks in Advance
Aaron

Hi Rob,

To my knowledge it's only possible to do this with mapbasic

You'll find your user's custom symbols with:

LocateFile$(LOCATE_CUSTSYMB_DIR)

Then you can have a directory on a network drive with all not MI standard
symbols that you copy to the above path.
You can launch the app through a workspace.

Robert,

You'll have to copy files from the network directory to the custom symbols
directory. Try this mb file. It's not tested ;-)
Look esp. at lines around 68...

You can put a mapbasic statement inside your workspace. To remove a menu you issue an
alter menu statement. I assume by the reload menu item you are referring to the 'File
> Revert Table' option? If that is the case then the statement would be:

Alter Menu "File" Remove 107

Stick this in your workspace file and mapinfo will remove the menu option from the
file menu.

RE: MI-L Custom symbols

2003-12-23 Thread Laurence
Hi Gina,

There is a way to do this is to run the following statement (in the
startup.wor, mapbasic window or mbx):

Alter MapInfoDialog dialog_ID
Control control_ID
{ Disable | Hide  | Value  new_value  } [ ,  {
Disable... } ]
[ Control... ]

The diallog ID numbers are version specific though. To determine a
dialog's ID number, run MapInfo for Windows with this command line:

  mapinfow.exe -helpdiag

After you run MapInfo with the -helpdiag argument, display a MapInfo
dialog box and click the Help button. Ordinarily, the Help button
launches Help, but because you used the -helpdiag argument, MapInfo
displays the ID number of the current dialog box.

Each individual control has an ID number. For example, most OK buttons
have an ID number of 1, and most Cancel buttons have an ID number of 2.
To determine the ID number for a specific control, you must use a
third-party developer's utility, such as the Spy++ utility that
Microsoft provides with its C compiler. The MapBasic software does not
provide a Spy++ utility.

In your case (based MI ver 7.0):
Alter MapInfoDialog 3110 Control Disable
Where is the Control ID (which I have not determined)

I think mapinfo 7 doesn't automatically recognise the CustSYMB folder
the way it did in previous versions. I think you have to add the
location of the custsymb folder in the startup.wor file manually.

We altered our startup.wor to look like this:

!Workspace
!Version 400
!Charset WindowsLatin1
Reload Custom Symbols from "m:\custom symbols"

Try that, changing the location of the custom symbols to wherever it is
on your machine / network.

2004-01-20 Thread Bagwell, Ross
Jonathan,

It isn't that MapInfo 7 doesn't automatically recognize the CustSymb folder, it is
that the CustSymb folder has been moved due to Windows 2000 compliancy.

The old CustSymb folder (MI 6.5 and less) was located in /ROOT/Program
Files/MapInfo/Professional/CustSymb/

The new CustSymb folder is located in /ROOT/Documents and
Settings/USERNAME/Application Data/MapInfo/Mapinfo/Professional/700/CustSymb

RE: MI-L Custom Symbols

2004-06-29 Thread David Reid
Try converting the image to a plain .bmp (bitmap image) Resample it down to a
minimum of 32x32 pixels, color type 8-bit palleted (system colors). I think
there is also a limit on the actual file size of 2,024 bytes (2kb).

Place the bmp file in your Mapinfo "CustSymb" directory, restart MI if already
open, then reopen MI, double click the object, and chose custom symbol from the
font menu and look for your new symbol.

Takes a bit of tweaking but once done, you'll get the hang of it.

Hi--

I am interested in using a symbol, in this case a tree, that was created in
Adobe Illustrator and using it with in MapInfo 7.0. I have a tool that allows
for the creation of custom symbols in MapInfo---however I do not know how to get
the image from Illustrator into MapInfo--

I tried to create a .tiff file but realized that everywhere the tree isn't is
white---and when imported into the map doesn't look right.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

saved my company logo as a bitmap file in the Custom symbols

When you say that whether I have created my bitmaps correctly, how do

Title: Message

If this is what I
expect, you'll be happy to know, it's not a problem with Mapinfo, or even Adobe,
but you will need to change a setting in Adobe to display your graphics
asthetically.

I'm running Adobe
6.0, but I'm sure this would apply to Adobe Acrobat and other
versions.

While viewing any of
your PDF's, from the file menu click [Edit] / [Preferences] /
[General]

Select "Display"
from the list and look for the "Smoothing" area of the
dialog.

You should find
several check boxes that when applied will smooth text, line art and
images.

Depending on what
application you're viewing your PDF's with, the wording and location for these
features may be a bit different but should be in there
somewhere.

2004-07-14 Thread Chan, Wai
Problem solved. Just want to share the fix to the list in case it may also
work for some of you.

I don't have any CUSTSYMB folder under my username (I don't know why). All
the custom symbols I see are from the Program
Files\MapInfo\Professional\CUSTSYMB. I created a symbol in Paint with 32X32
pixels, 16 color bitmap with a file name 1-32. Then alone didn't work.
Only until I saved it as one of the already existing file, e.g. HYDR1-32,
and made it HYDR2-32, then it finally showed up. I have no idea why but it
worked.

A thousand thanks to those who've sent me advices. I really appreciate a
lot.

With post-WIN 2000 OS Mapinfo stores them locally and separate for each user

I think you will find them at "C:\Documents and Settings\(you login

I cannot for the life of me figure out where the custsymb folder is

Hi,

Many people has this problem because Mapinfo has change the place of the
custom symbol : "C:\Documents and Settings\Yourname\Application
Data\MapInfo\MapInfo\Professional\650\CustSymb"

You must put in this directory your custom symbol that are in the other
directory (C:\Program Files\MapInfo\Professional).

Hope that help you,

Hi,

I've install MapInfo 6.5 on several NT4, SR6 computers and our custom
symbols do not appear in the symbol dialog box on any of them.

Our symbols are all square (32x32), most are 256 colours but some are Black
& White. We have had no problems with them in previous versions of MI.

Has anybody else experienced this problem and if so is there a solution?

Thanks,

Chris

Catherine,

Make sure that your symbol is has 256k color depth or less. If it is set
to 24-bit color (which paintbrush defaults to, for example) then the
symbol will not show. Also, the symbol has to 32x32 pixels or less and

Good morning everyone,

I am wondering if anyone might have come up with this problem...
Using MapInfo 6.5 (+patch) on Windows 2000, I tried adding a bitmap to
the MapInfo Custom Symbol folder. I tried different formats of bitmaps,
various name formats. They are of an appropriate size. Then I tried to
modify an actual MapInfo Custom Symbol or to simply rename one of them.
I have reloaded the custom symbols in MapInfo and reloaded MapInfo
itself. Nothing will do.

I noticed that when I modify the folder, MapInfo will display the custom
symbols in their name's alphabetical order until it gets to the new one.
The new one and the rest of them will not be displayed. If my new
symbol's name starts with a z, I'll see all of them but my new symbol.
Also, if I use a new symbol and give it the name of an already existing
MapInfo custom symbol, even the I won't see my new symbol.

I remember doing such things without too many problems before (version
6.0). Anyone has any idea?

Thank you in advance for any help!

RE: MI-L Custom Symbols and MapInfo 6.5

2001-09-20 Thread Catherine Lessard

Hello to all!

Thank you for the prompt answers I received. But I think I may have
exposed my problem in a bit of a twisted way and was misunderstood by
most. So my problem is not simply the image format, nor the location of
the CustSymb repertory, but really the fact that I can't modify one of
MapInfo's own Custom Symbols (This means that the image format remains
unchanged from the original MapInfo CustomSymbol) Also, I couldn't even
simply rename one of MapInfo's Custom Symbol. This is really unusual,
isn't it?

And of course all of this is working peachy with MapInfo 6.0...

Catherine Lessard

2004-07-14 Thread Apers Mathieu
I had this same problem a while agoi ended up doing a search on the C: drive and
found that the Custom symbol directory was duplicated twice...

once in:
C:\Documents and Settings\apers\Application
Data\MapInfo\MapInfo\Professional\700\CustSymb

and again in:
C:\Documents and Settings\apers\Application Data\MapInfo\MapInfo\ProViewer\700\CustSymb

I opened an existing Custom symbol, edited it (using paint, simply importing the new
symbol into it) i then made sure i copied the new symbol to both directories.

now i'm no programmiong Whizz but to me it LOOKED simply like 2 seperate directories
for MAPINFO and for PROVIEWER, but the custom symbol did not appear in MAPINFO until i
had changed it in BOTH directories. (i'm on v7.0 also BTW)

go figure!
hope this is helpful.

RE: MI-L Custom Symbols Didn't Appear >> location of application data files

2004-07-14 Thread GIS Helpdesk
the location of these files is configurable.

from version 6.5 upwards the custom symbols directory (and others like graphing and
thematic templates) are placed in the user profile (c:\documents and settings) by
default, rather than in the install directory as previously.
from version 7 upwards the location of these files could then be controlled by using a
mode.ini file at install (see user manual for more details although you're also
welcome to ask me...). this allows you, for example to put these directories into the
install directory (available to all users) or into per user or per machine profiles.
there are advantages/ disadvantages to all of these. [a consideration for us was the
sheer size of downloading remote profiles across networks that contain many user
files, so we use the old default of install directory.]
i'm interested in other people's course of action on this?

it is possible to end up with several of these directories if previous installs have
not been cleaned up which may have caused the confusion of locations for some.

I found another CustSymb folder on my computer. Running Windows 2000 and
MapInfo 7.0.
If I add new symbols or change them here it works.

Subject: MI-L Custom Symbols Didn't Appear

I wanted to use my custom bitmap as symbols. I followed what the manual
suggested, i.e. saved the symbol as bitmap in the CUSTSYMB directory. I
reloaded it and even closed the session and opened MapInfo again, the symbol
just didn't appear from the font list.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
