That is a nice feature sometimes, while other times is can be a headache.

Yes, but imagine, all of these years, Thunderbird has been offering this
default
for MSO. This seems to give the view that the .doc and .pdf files have
established the norm, when we should be pushing for support for conventions.
OpenDocument Format (ODF) support is crucial to our distro. We should try to
get
support for the ODF formats from as many places as possible. It will only help
us. You can always remove these preferences if you like. Unfortunately, I don't
believe that Thunderbird (Mozilla) would want to remove the .doc and .pdf
formats from the default install, so we may as well push for ODF as well.

Cheers

Marc

Hi :)

I think if you find one of those documents that opens in FireFox and
right-click, choose Properties then you can set the default program as
LibreOffice. Hopefully there is only 1 sub-set of OpenDocuments that have this
problem on your machine but if you find other documents opening in FireFox then
you might have to repeat this 2 or 3 more times to catch them all.

LibreOffice is not a distro it is a suite. Usually OpenSource projects of
anything like this size are distros and the unusual way TDF formed is more
usual
amongst distros so it is easy to make the mistake. It is difficult to think of
a generic term that would cover Gimp, Firefox, Mozilla, the distros, small
libraries, large organisations but i guess project is about the most generic?

 Hi Paulo:

I don't think there is anything wrong with the file names. We had just
discussed avoiding LibO when using Marketing materials going out to the
public. The LibO short name, in this case, makes sense as it would be
quite a bit longer if the full name were used. Therefore, I do not have
a problem with it. Unless anyone else complains, I do not see any reason
 to change the file names.

Many thanks for the great work.

 Cheers

 Marc

Hi Paulo:

I now see that you have changed to LibreOffice on your next set. I will
change the names LibO to LibreOffice as you had suggested, just to keep
all of the file naming structure the same.

Hi :)

Long file-names are fashionable nowadays even tho that sometimes causes
problems, particularly in Windows. People also want to use characters such as
.
% ? * even tho those are more likely to cause problems. Many of us try to
keep file-names as short as possible (having grown-up naming things in 8
characters or less) but it is not really necessary nowadays.

Hi Tom:

We are talking about something else. It's the part where, in the body of
the text, when you are composing an email, if you type .doc or .pdf
a pop-up window on the bottom will rise and prompt you to not forget the
attachment. Thunderbird has offered this as a feature at the point of
install for quite a few versions. You can also turn this feature of in
the preferences setup. In this case, I submitted a feature request for
ODF support and it has been accepted and being completed as we speak.

No problem with calling LibreOffice a suite/project rather than a distro.

[libreoffice-marketing] design overhaul

2011-02-17 Thread Johannes Bausch
Hey folks,

as far as I have followed the development so far it seems that both logo and
icons (which make the gross of our branding) for the current release (3.3)
have been used quite extensively and seem to be the ones we will settle on
in the long run. I still want to share some thoughts about that.

1. What happened to the community branding? As the current logo has been
used so much, I must say that I want to speak *against* changing it again.
2. The wiki branding site is still full of ideas for logos, mascots, icons
etc. and it seems as if nothing is decided yet. And this is the official
position, isn't it? Having said that, I'd like to encourage you (us) to
somehow finalize the branding. There are so many great artists (see the
wallpaper renders of the icons) who use, yes, which drafts? - The official
one? The ones they like most? - for their work. I think it would be better
if we had a clear decision regarding branding, and that as soon as possible.
3. There is no central place to look for resources (yes, since we haven't
decided upon an official version yet, I begin to repeat myself). The
wallpaper renders, for example, where are the source files for these icons?
They look like Bernhard's, but even better. *They *should be the ones used
in the application.

Now some minor issues which I still don't like about the current official
files.
1. The LibreOffice still has no proper ligatures. From a typographic point
of view the text looks cheap.
2. There is no proper spacing/connection between logo and logo text:
http://tinyurl.com/6kt8n8q
For me logo and text look like two distinct parts. There are several reasons
for this. The edges on the logo are rounded while the text has sharp ones.
The lines of text and logo are not the same width.
3. I don't like the emboss effect on the contemporary color version (while
this might be my personal opinion, I still want you to consider that for a
second. In my eyes it just looks like a cheap gimp filter added to the
normal version).

As far as I can remember, we thought about starting work on the official
branding after 3.3 is released. I am willing to spend some time on this
issue over the next few months, but only if we can decide upon a goal in
this discussion.

Thanks,
Joey

Then moved your the video, as un-published, to the youtube/libreoffice

The embedded js, for a blog let's say, is:
object width=425 height=344param name=movie

It is now in the webM format (720p) - so ready for html(5) viewers.

I did also upload the unaltered avi file - again it is currently
un-published till I hear if this is really a place they want it.

I've added the English subtitle file you included to both uploads, also.

Florian talked about wanting to be able to embed these in sites, so this

Well - I guess the question is in the subject and the first lines.

No problem - I wanted to ask if this is

a) a channel they want to use?

b) do folks want this kind of trailer? Putting a brOffice trailer even,
that's just a screen capture and edit. Right now I can put some time
into doing a couple of clips for trailers or such - nothing too fancy.

The physical files on youtube can, and I assumed likely would, end up
being deleted or updated after people look, talk, decide.

So - at this point I'm just offering to help put this in place for a
person(s) to take over - the videos can be removed or updated at any

The embedded js, for a blog let's say, is:
  object width=425 height=344param name=movie
  value=http://www.youtube.com/v/FDrQF--9pk0?hl=enfs=1;/paramparam
  name=allowFullScreen value=true/paramparam
  name=allowscriptaccess value=always/paramembed
  src=http://www.youtube.com/v/FDrQF--9pk0?hl=enfs=1;
  type=application/x-shockwave-flash allowscriptaccess=always
  allowfullscreen=true width=425 height=344/embed/object

It is now in the webM format (720p) - so ready for html(5) viewers.

I did also upload the unaltered avi file - again it is currently
un-published till I hear if this is really a place they want it.

I've added the English subtitle file you included to both uploads, also.

Florian talked about wanting to be able to embed these in sites, so this
  is one avenue.

Well - I guess the question is in the subject and the first lines.

  Thanks

  Hi Joey, all!

You're totally that we want to go on with the Community Design.

But this will happen on the design list, not on marketing.

So please: everybody interested in this task: Join our Design Team.

The Kick-Off for the Design Team has reached it's third step: Introduction
  of the Team Members:

  http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Kick-Off#Step_3:_Introduction_of_the_Team_Members

The Community Design is one of the main points in Step 7 - probably to be
started in a few weeks, while the steps in-between are necessary to be
  solved before.

CC'ing the design list, so the people there are aware of this mail...

  Best regards

  Bernhard

(for the design list I keep the full quote)

  Johannes Bausch schrieb:

   Hey folks,

as far as I have followed the development so far it seems that both logo
  and
icons (which make the gross of our branding) for the current release (3.3)
have been used quite extensively and seem to be the ones we will settle on
in the long run.

I think it would be better
if we had a clear decision regarding branding, and that as soon as
  possible.
  3. There is no central place to look for resources (yes, since we haven't
decided upon an official version yet, I begin to repeat myself). The
wallpaper renders, for example, where are the source files for these
  icons?
They look like Bernhard's, but even better. *They *should be the ones used
  in the application.

Now some minor issues which I still don't like about the current
  official
  files.
  1. The LibreOffice still has no proper ligatures. From a typographic
  point
of view the text looks cheap.
  2. There is no proper spacing/connection between logo and logo text:
  http://tinyurl.com/6kt8n8q
For me logo and text look like two distinct parts. There are several
  reasons
for this. The edges on the logo are rounded while the text has sharp ones.
The lines of text and logo are not the same width.
  3. I don't like the emboss effect on the contemporary color version
  (while
this might be my personal opinion, I still want you to consider that for a
second. In my eyes it just looks like a cheap gimp filter added to the
  normal version).

As far as I can remember, we thought about starting work on the official
branding after 3.3 is released. I am willing to spend some time on this
issue over the next few months, but only if we can decide upon a goal in
  this discussion.

  Thanks,
  Joey

Hi Paulo

The suite is called LibreOffice with no spaces.

Re: use of LibO. We had agreed a couple months ago that the use of LibO as short
form would not be encouraged as we wanted to get the LibreOffice brand name
known to people. This was also said in context of marketing materials. I don't
think that this would apply to file naming convention as sometimes we need to
abbreviate file names to make them fit.

As Italo says do not take this as an order, but IMO, I think that we would want
to make our official name known before advertising a short form. Many people
still have never heard of LibreOffice.

Just in case you are not aware, Italo Vignoli is our marketing lead. We rely
very much on his marketing expertise and wisdom.

Cheers

Hi :)

Yes, for internal communications we have been mostly using LibO or occasionally
LO but we want to avoid that getting out-there to the outside world. At least
for now. Outsiders, or people on the fringes will use a lot of different names
until they are familiar with the 'correct one'. We really want to establish
LibreOffice as the 'correct name' and that could take a long time.

In linux the 3 letters lib at the start of a name are 'reserved' for libraries
and after those 3 letters should be the functionality or a nickname. In a
similar way the letter K (or Qt) at the start of a name often indicates that the
project is built for the KDE desktop. A G often indicates something for the
Gnome desktop environment.

We (the wider OpenSource and linux communities) try to avoid being tooo strict
about any rules or guidelines and usually encourage diversity. Following rules
too closely can stifle innovation and creativity.

Regards from
Tom :)

should change the name of files to avoid the use of LibO (my fault, I'm
sorry). What do you think?

Cheers

Marc
