We have had this slogan for a long time:

I think in the wiki you will find much more banners, stickers, proposals

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Brochure-type: General Information

2013-05-14 Thread klaus-jürgen weghorn ol

Hi Jean, Marc,
sorry for the interference. I only follow these threads with one eye and
maybe I loose the following discussions.
- I didn't find any link in the wiki pages to files of the Brochures,
neither the working ones nor the result. And scrolling through the
thread to find the working links is not easy.
- Shouldn't we do the brochure for LibO 4 and not for 4.0? So we needn't
to change it with 4.1, and the brochures can e.g. be part of different
LibOxes. Then Tim et al. needn't to change it every time. And printings
won't be old in July 28th, when 4.1.0 is released.

I don't know who they exactly are but it is easy to speculate. It is
Easter time so we can search some Easter eggs. ;-)

Have a look for the former Release Manager of OpenOffice.org and the
actual Senior Product Manager of Open-Xchange and you will find one. The
others are near by.

Some hints (in German): [1]

But I don't think that there is any interest to contribute, neither from
the former OOo devs nor from Open-XChange, a former daughter of SUSE,
who are in the same building complex with the headquarter of SUSE [2].
So it would be an easy way to take a cup of coffee, do a short walk and

How do you handle with CocaCola, Samsung, Mc Donald's etc.?
How do you handle with proper names?

LibreOffice is a trademark and TheDocumentFoundation is a proper name.
Even the Japanese, Korean, Chinese write the international company's
names in latin [1], [2].

Maybe explaining the sense of the "speaking" names will help, too.

Should this be an "official" marketing brochure?

If so my opinions to that:
The brochure is breaking the branding rules [1] (but no-one seems to
care of branding rules lately): You should not put the logo above
LibreOffice.

I don't know if it is a good idea to use a voted out cover design.
The design of 4.0 web page (and of 4.0 documentation) leads to another
direction: black half circle with logo on it. But there was no design
(or marketing) decision about that, as I remember.

[1]
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding#Guidelines_and_Best_Practices

As some of us are getting older:
An 8pt font isn't really good to read for "old" men who don't want to
wear glasses ;-). You should use 11pt. And so you won't get so much text
but good information.
If you need the whole text you should not make a trifolder with letter
size but a short handout or bigger size.

> What about licensing, is that ok?

I'm not familiar with licensing but why don't you use the 3.0 [2]?

It looks great.

Some comments from me:
The whole magazine has only right pages. When I will print it as a
magazine it has wrong pages on the left site.

I have some bad feelings about the using of some pictures because of
licenses. Do we have the right to use all the pictures in a printing?
I don't know if it is an important point but I wouldn't use screenshots
with personas like the known prehistoric squirrel (page 12) or the
hearty dog (page 17) because of licenses. We should use only pictures
with an open license.

In Germany many libraries start now to offer e-books. And I think many
in Canada/Australia and all over the world do this.
Why don't you try to get our e-books (epub/pdf) first in the libraries?
No expenses. When we will get in such a library then the question about
written books will come from the users.

Ok, there is for now only one epub for Getting started 3.3 [1] but this
may be an Easy Hack for documentation list doing it especially with 4.0.
And all books are available as pdf.

Yes, that's the general idea; that's the strategy. Tactics do include
product pages of course but no classical SWOTs and segmentation
analysis. So yes, the new line of thinking is not about the product but
about the community, and how, process wise, the marketing team should
act as an information broker inside the project and outside it.

As a first personal concept for 4.0 I made a new line of
buttons/documentation covers:

http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:K-j/Drafts/Concept-GIn#Concept_.22Get_involved.21.22

Maybe this can be part of the strategy and for marketing for 4.0.

The first "official" banner was used for the Test Marathon 4.0:

We can put this slogan to LibreOffice 4.0 (Start Center, About, etc.),
so "Get involved!" will be part of LibO 4.0. I want to make some
proposals for this, but lack of time bar me from doing it. Maybe next
weekend if there is some interest.

rework it entirely, starting almost from scratch (although I would leave

The Design team has made some categories for their work [1]:

Maybe we can wait with the discussion until LibOConf 2012 in Berlin.

Yup, it looks like "Google public calendar" doesn't need the "Provider
for Google Calendar". Sorry I should have checked; I just assumed it
would work the same way as it does for all of my private calendars.

Here are the steps to get it to post a "Google Public Calendar":

After installing the Lightning extension (restart your Thunderbird):

I already have some calendars (one of them is a Google calendar) in my
Thunderbird 12.0.1 with Lightning 1.4 and the Addon "Provider for Google
Calendar 0.13". My Google calendars works fine.

[...]

* pick iCalendar (ICS) and insert the LibreOffice iCal address in the
field next to "Location") then press "Next"

I took this address:
https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/libreoffice%40parEntreprise.com/public/basic.ics

* name your calendar (presumably you would want to call it LibreOffice
Events); pick the colour of the calendar of you choice; "Show Reminders"
and E-mail is up to you. Press "Next" and "End"
* Your new "LibreOffice Events" calendar should now show in the left
hand side.

Yes, the calendar is there but not active because of the lack of password.

NOTE:
* To change any of the calendar's properties, just right-click on the
calendar name on the left-hand side and choose "Properties". Also note
that you cannot Add or Delete any events unless you have Admin rights
*If you have Admin rights to the "LibreOffice Events Calendar", then you
would have to use the "Provider for Google Calendar" option when
creating your Thunderbird-Lightning calendar and you will to add the
email/password to access the calendar.

Maybe it is a problem with the "Provider". I need because of my other
Google calendar.

Let me know if this does not work.

It does not work here.

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: Getting Started 3.4 full book published

2012-04-01 Thread klaus-jürgen weghorn ol

Hi Jean, *,
Am 31.03.2012 02:11, schrieb Jean Weber:

We've been talking about two possibilities, each of them involving
*not* attempting to update everything for each release.
1) Only update chapters where significant changes are required (UI
looks very different; major new features; corrections to errors). In
most cases, most chapters need only trivial, or no, changes to keep
them current, although the writing in some of them can still be
improved.
2) Combined with 1), only attempt to release a new version of each
book once a year.

What do you think about taking the version 3.3 (or 3.4) as base
document, no change of the content, and put in an own heading at the end
of the chapter called "new in version 3.5". There will be a list or some
descriptions of the changes. Only this piece must be written and be
proofread. The front page will tell "Version 3.3 with explanations for
3.5" or so.

We can also take these headings and make an own chapter for it.
With 3.6 there is then a next heading (or chapter).

So there is no need for reviewing the existing content and we can take
the available wiki pages and informations.

Only if there are important changes or we find the persons to work on
the whole book, we change the content and the screenshots.

The big work will then be with 4.0.

But the main problem is that, although we have many people who say
they are willing to do proofreading (copy-editing), that's not much
help unless there are enough people who (a) know how to review the
content for accuracy; (b) can use existing info (such as the list of
new features) to know what to look for and incorporate changes when
needed; and (c) have the time to do the updating and writing, to get
things to the point where copy-editing (proofreading) is useful.

Maybe we try my proposal with the Calc Guide, make a wiki page with:
"What are the changes in Calc from 3.3 to 3.4 to 3.5", take in the
structure of the Calc Guide and the informations we find in the wiki.

On a wiki page some more people can work with.

I'm ccing the document ml to get their opinions. At least we should take
the whole discussion to that ml?!

Do we only want to address the people who will download or also that

[libreoffice-marketing] [UX] Content for a Paper case for the LibOx

2011-12-04 Thread klaus-jürgen weghorn ol

Hi all,
maybe you have noticed that some times ago Nik showed a fine proposal
for a LibOx-paper case [1] [2].

He also wrote:
"I haven't put real content in my Design because I wanted to give
Marketing and UX a chance to work out what they think would be best,
that and localisation issues."

Daniel Steyer and me are working on this subject. We made the
instructions as odt and pdf in Englisch and German.

Nik mentioned two passages (each max. 10 lines) with content:
"Installation" (about 480 characters) and "Feature" (about 600 characters).

And now we need this content. Maybe we can also put other information on it.

Do you have any decisions or proposals?
