2013-03-20 Thread Alexandro Colorado
Here is some artwork from a OS-Tan Logo originally for Linux, but with
some changes, I have modified the colors and peaks of the bird to be
more gull like. with the AOO colors.
http://imagebin.org/251048

I might do a different one with a white coat and helmet and blue edge.

Hi Robin,

I love the concept. I think our readers and users will as well.

For the website (http://www.openoffice.org/) the idea was to put it in the
upper left, to replace the current logo for the days leading up to DFD.
But that space is currently only 100 pixels high. We might be able to
exceed that by a little, but I'm not sure 240 pixels will work.

One idea might be to toss out the text and the date and tighten the
remaining elements. We can still use the text headline on the website
(where it currently says "Call For Designers: Apache OpenOffice 4.0 Brand
Refresh
Project")
for the actual DFD text and date.

Does that make sense? Would that get us closer to 100px?

Btw, I'll use the full version, as you have it now on the blog post, where
we have more room to play with.

Regards,

-Rob

Re: Document Freedom Day 2013 -- March 27

2013-03-20 Thread Samer Mansour
Robin those look really good. I think they are excellent copy write ideas,
letting the bird out of its cage, considering the DFD logo is a bird.

For the website header do we need a wider logo? If so maybe a single cage
with the OO orb to the right, same text underneath? Up to you Robin and if
Rob Weir requires it.
I think the two above are good size for posting to social media and sharing.

Thank you for helping!

Re: Document Freedom Day 2013 -- March 27

2013-03-20 Thread Robin Fowler
Sorry for taking so long, unfortunately I've not had much time recently. I've come up with a logo, it's still quite rough but might be better than nothing. It doesn't have a transparent background because it's not straight forward with the shadow of the OO logo. (May I say it's a bit problematic having two different background colours. Especially when dealing with images that we have no access to layers.) Anyway, you may well prefer to use one of the other logos available, and that's fine.RobinOn 6 Mar 2013, at 20:07, Rob Weir wrote:On Wed, Mar 6, 2013 at 1:06 PM, Robin Fowler wrote:I'll probably find the time to make a logo. Re: [AOO 4.0 Branding Refresh] Call For Google Hangout

2013-03-20 Thread Samer Mansour
Ariel, I also hold the same feeling that we should keep the "orb" in some
manner.
I've proposed a flat logo as it is just the current trend, it may stick but
we don't know as its like fashion, what's fashionable this decade is
"horrible" the next.
Doesn't mean we can't have another refresh in the future. Flat is
certainly screen and print friendly as well.

I just found out the limit is actually 10 people for my google account. 15
is if you have a domain registered with google for google services for
business.
It does how ever support youtube live streaming which I'll enable and post.
I'll take comments from outside the hangout via twitter if the room fills
up. #oobrand

I'll summarize and post before as well.

Rob, could I get facebook admin access to the AOO page, I could post a link
to the youtube live stream video just before it starts there.
It may generate interest if people watch live as we go through proposals
and discuss. Almost done agenda, I hacked away at it last night.

I like the orb as well and I like the new design from Kevin who did a
minor change and included a globe (see Gulls with globe 01 -
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.x+-+Logo+Explorations)

More important from my point of view is that we come to a conclusion
soon. I can live with the orb with minor changes and a new font.

He took the About from 3.4, the one from trunk looks much nicer (though
it will have to be redone).

I noticed two major changes in the proposals:

1) the ORB disappears completely, or is flatten

2) several logo explorations have a flat look too, very much similar to
the one Microsoft has given to it products (the Outlook website,
   Windows 8, MS Office).

Ad (1): modifying or eliminating the ORB is IMO a very bad idea. It's
not only nice and well-designed, but it's also the OpenOffice identity
since it appeared. You can compare it with Firefox logo and its history:
since 0.8 it has undergo only a minor redesign for 3.5, that certainly
didn't change its identity. vid.
http://www.hicksdesign.co.uk/journal/branding-firefox
http://idsgn.org/posts/firefox-refreshes-logo/

Ad (2): it is impossible not to see in the several application icons
proposal a strong resemblance with the latest look of the Microsoft
products; for example, the application icons in
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/download/attachments/27846912/AOO-4.0-Logo-Product-Icons.png?version=1&modificationDate=1361858664000

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/download/attachments/30753365/OO_Design_Robin_Fowler.jpg
IMO it is important to develop a visual identity of our own.

great, there is already a good collection.

I would keep the proposed changes minimal because we need developers who
do the work on the changed design. Exchanging images is one easy part,
redesign and changing code more work, especially in our code where UI is
more work and can't be compared with for example Java swing ;-)

The About dialog looks wrong at least compared with the MacOS version. I
think it is not really different on the platforms. I have to check the
other platforms.

The offical product name is "Apache OpenOffice" but the normal usage is
OpenOffice. We have already changed the former name "OpenOffice.org" to
simply "OpenOffice". This means the installation directory for 4.0 is
only "OpenOffice 4" or "openoffice4". The string name references in the
product are changed from OpenOffice.org to OpenOffice.

"Apache OpenOffice" will be used in official public
communication/announcements and in the logo/logo artifacts.
