GCI: Update Gnome Usergroup Info, Introduction
Hello, my name is Jason Lo, and I have taken this GCI task ( http://www.google-melange.com/gci/task/show/google/gci2010/gnome/t129061755958#c16001). I was asked by Dave Neary to prepare an email to send out, but before I do that, I'd like to ask to some questions. Namely, what should the overall tone and content of this email be? And also, should I mention that I am a GCI student, and should I even go as far as to mention the two previous students that tried to undertake this task, maybe in a sort of apologetic tone? Thanks. -- marketing-list mailing list marketing-list@gnome.org http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/marketing-list

Hi Jason, Jason Lo wrote: Namely, what should the overall tone and content of this email be? Informal and short. Hi! I know you've been bothered a couple of times with this already, but I'm helping update which GNOME user groups are active and what you're up to, and I'd really appreciate a quick answer from you, since you're listed as a contact for GNOME user group name. Can you let me know if you're still involved with the GUG? If not, can you let me know who is now the main contact for the GUG, please? And also, should I mention that I am a GCI student, and should I even go as far as to mention the two previous students that tried to undertake this task, maybe in a sort of apologetic tone? Thanks. I definitely think that a somewhat apologetic tone is appropriate. Also, describing what GCI is, and the task as defined there, at the end of your mail, might help smooth things over too. I suspect many GNOME User Group people don't really know what GCI is. Re: GCI: Update Gnome Usergroup Info, Introduction
I agree with Dave Neary's points. I also think showing that you are going to follow up and record the information might encourage people to take your request seriously. Maybe create the wiki page beforehand and populate it with all the information you have? Maybe one piece of information is how many people are signed up on the mailing list and how active it is, i.e. how many mails/month? The sys admin team can probably help gather any information that's not public (like number of people on the list). I went and added a subsection with an email template based off Dave's. Any comments or suggestions? http://live.gnome.org/UserGroups#Template_Email On Mon, Jan 3, 2011 at 2:54 PM, Stormy Peters sto...@gnome.org wrote: I agree with Dave Neary's points. Excellent! Great to see this task moving as it should be an important piece of our marketing and outreach efforts. I would replace open source by free and open source to make the email more inclusive, especially since GNOME is part of the GNU project (www.gnome.org/about/ ). If you need any help getting 'faster' responses with the GUGs in Asia please let me know as this is an area where I should be able to help. Thank you very much for your time and commitment.
