[MARMAM] New paper: Stakeholder perspectives on illegal fishing and marine mammal bycatch

2023-06-21 Thread Simon Goodman
Dear MARMAMers,

We are happy to share our new open access paper:

"Stakeholder consensus suggests strategies to promote sustainability in an
artisanal fishery with high rates of poaching and marine mammal bycatch"

Published in the journal People & Nature, available here:
https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/pan3.10490

Abstract

  1. Illegal fishing for high value species in artisanal fisheries drives
incidental catch and declines of marine mammals and other large vertebrates of
conservation importance around the world. Engaging with stakeholders is
essential to understand which strategies will be effective in motivating the
development of more sustainable practices, and disengagement from illegal
fisheries.
  2. Here we present the results of a Q study carried out in autumn 2018 with
50 stakeholders from the Caspian Sea coast of Dagestan (Russian Federation),
including fishers illegally targeting sturgeon (Acipenseridae) and Caspian
seals Pusa caspica, traders and fisheries managers. We assess viewpoints on
biodiversity governance; illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing;
illegal wildlife trade (IWT) and conservation.
  3. Three distinct viewpoint groups emerged from a factor analysis, which we
designated as 'Nostalgists', 'Optimists' and 'Pessimists'. Nostalgists were
concerned with decline in environmental quality, and emphasised a need for
increased centralised involvement of authorities reminiscent of the old Soviet
system. Optimists expressed support for a well-regulated legal fisheries
sector, while Pessimists were very aware of the negative impact of illegal
fisheries and IWT, but felt they could not be controlled.
  4. Among all groups we found a strong desire for alternative livelihoods
(ALs), improved sustainability and agreement on the potential effectiveness of
marine protected areas (MPAs) and increased regulation, even if some
stakeholders felt they were not achievable goals.
  5. We used our results to inform three workshops in which Dagestani fishers
and fishery experts discussed potential conservation interventions, and the
barriers to their implementation. Six action types were identified including
enhanced law enforcement, increased regulation, protected areas, alternative
livelihoods, reducing demand for sturgeon and seal products and the need for
further research to guide policy development.
  6. This consensus suggests that communities are willing to reduce
participation in illegal fishing given appropriate support. The socioeconomic
factors driving illegal fisheries and bycatch for Caspian seals parallel those
for other endangered marine mammals such as Vaquita Phocoena sinus and suggest
that Q studies could be applied in other artisanal fisheries with high rates of
marine mammal bycatch to help identify policy interventions supported by
involved communities.

Extensive marine engineering works are occurring in Asian waters, where
there is high marine biodiversity. Maritime constructions, offshore wind
power installations, underwater mining, shipping, fisheries, and geological
studies produce a wide variety of noises in the water. Marine mammals, sea
turtles, fishes, and aquatic invertebrates all could be affected by the
exposure to underwater noises. At this moment, baseline information on
ecologically important marine organisms, and proposed scientific standards
of noise impact on these marine organisms are still quite limited within
Asian waters. Reliable ocean noise measurements and an evaluation of its
effects in coastal and deep waters are needed. The Oceanoise Asia symposium
focuses on current available knowledge and future perspectives on
physiology, ecology and behavior of ecologically and economically important
marine organisms, physical and biological sound measurement and biological
noise response observations. The 3rd Oceanoise Asia aims at promoting
scientific research and awareness about the impacts of noise on the marine
organisms in Asian waters. Keywords: soundscape, underwater ambient noise,
man-made noise, noise impacts, physiology, ecology and behavior of marine
organisms.

[MARMAM] New Paper Available

2023-06-21 Thread Thomas Jefferson
Dear MARMAMers,  My co-authors and I are pleased to announce the publication of
the following paper:
Jefferson, T. A., E. A. Becker and S. L. Huang. (2023). Influences of natural
and anthropogenic habitat variables on Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins Sousa
chinensis in Hong Kong. Endangered Species Research, 51, 143-160.
https://doi.org/10.3354/esr01249ABSTRACT: Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins Sousa
chinensis in Hong Kong (HK) waters are part of a large (ca. 2000−2500), but
declining, population that occurs in the Pearl River Estuary of southern China.
To understand the factors that may influence dolphin densities in 4 different
parts of HK, a 25 yr (1996−2020) database containing 66 439 km of line-transect
survey effort and 4052 dolphin sightings was used. Seventeen variables
representing natural and anthropogenic habitat factors were evaluated using
generalized additive models (GAMs) to identify the preferred habitat of
humpback dolphins in HK waters. In the environmental GAMs, rainfall, salinity,
and river discharge were significant factors related to dolphin density,
consistent with their observed strong preference for estuarine habitat. Sea
surface temperature was also important for one of the 4 subareas. In the
anthropogenic GAMs, the only significant variable was the amount of habitat
area lost to land reclamation in North Lantau. This finding is consistent with
previous hypotheses that heavy coastal engineering in North Lantau has
contributed to observed declines in dolphin abundance during the study period.
This study provides some of the first quantitative indications of factors that
are potentially influencing the density of the animals in various parts of HK.
As such, it will be a valuable tool for evaluating and mitigating potential
impacts of both natural and anthropogenic factors on the population in the
future.

Expedition, 1838–1842: history and taxonomy. Archives of Natural History, 50,

Exploring Expedition of 1838–1842, in some ways, represents the
beginning of American marine mammal biology. The expedition returned home with
information on at least
twelve marine mammal specimens (mostly small cetaceans or pinnipeds), seven of
which were considered
new species at the time. Commanded by Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, the expedition
covered over 80,000
miles, surveyed new waters and lands, and brought back thousands of scientific
specimens. Official
publications of the expedition by Titian Peale and John Cassin cover the birds
and mammals collected. The
squadron’s publications, and the journals of its officers and scientists also
contain a good deal of information
about sightings of marine mammals. Of particular interest were whaling
operations and grounds, and the
expedition did much to help expand the whaling prospects of the United States
around the globe, with a
focus on the South Pacific islands. Though largely forgotten today, the “U. S.
Ex. Ex.” played an important
early role in establishing American influence in marine mammal biology and
global whaling operations.

special guests: Danielle Conry & Leanne Rosser.

Cetacean Sessions is a free seasonal bi-weekly webinar series where we
discuss impactful cetacean science with those conducting it around the
world. It is informal, educational, interactive, and geared towards those
studying or interested in cetaceans. Cetacean Sessions was created by Bay
Cetology and is being hosted by Anais and Naomi, the co-founders of Whale
Scientists.

Presentation and discussion will be followed by live Q&A with the audience.

For viewing/participating, we recommend earbuds/headphones and using Chrome
or Firefox.
*Cannot watch live? No worries!* You can watch the replay anytime using the
