[MARMAM] Humpback Whale sighting in the tuscan waters
Davide Bedocchi. CETUS Cetacean Research Centre. Viareggio (LU) – Italy. Dear Colleagues, this message is to inform you about the extraordinary sighting of Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Mediterranean Sea. Here below some informations regarding this important sighting for OTC (Cetacean Tuscan Observatory): Date: 27 August 2010 Hour: 17.00 to 20.00 Position: 1 Km West from Viareggio (Tuscany - Italy). Bathymetry: +- 12 meters. Our research catamaran Krill together with the Viareggio CoastGuard followed the Humpback Whale, straordinary species inside the Mediterranean Sea, during the swimming and breaching activity of the animal for about three hours. At the end of the sighting the animal was swimming with a southward direction along the coastline. In the last two hundred years we had in the Mediterranean Sea only thirteen sightings of Humpback Whale. The last well documented sightings: 2002 Trieste and Senigallia (Italy), 2004 Siracusa (Italy), 2009 Trieste and now Viareggio (Italy). It could be very interesting to match data of the previous sightings to understand if the sighted animal could be the same in the last years or if we are in presence of different animals. Pls contact us at ce...@supereva.it or bedocc...@yahoo.it to request images of the whale or to share data to investigate together. [MARMAM] Great Sighting of Sperm whales in the water of Tuscan Archipelago
Sender: Davide Bedocchi, CE.TU.S. Cetacean Research Centre in Viareggio Italy Email address:[EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject Heading: Great Sighting of Sperm whales in the water of Tuscan Archipelago Text: Dear Colleagues, August 14, 2008. 3:00 PM. Wonderful sighting of a Sperm whales group (Physeter catodon) during "Discovering our sea" eco-touristic cruises for youngs organized by Lucca District and Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca Foundation. On board of KRILL Research Catamaran of CE.TU.S. Cetacean Research Centre in Viareggio, for the first time after several years of researches, we sighted, filmed and took pictures of 5 Sperm whales in the water of the Tuscan Archipelago. 21 miles from Elba Island, the Sperm whales swam in closed formation with 20 Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba). This important sighting shows that in the tuscan waters, where the Tuscan Observatory of Cetaceans (Tuscan Region Administration's structure with H.Q. in Capoliveri and Viareggio) is working , besides fin whales, bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins, Risso's dolphins, also sperm whales are present. To confirm the sperm whales presence in this area, we can also remember the stranding of a young sperm whale dated June 02, 2008 along the coastline of Piombino in addition of many informations reported during this year from tuscan fishermen. This summer, during the previous cruises, CE.TU.S. sighted 6 finwhales, over 200 striped dolphins and 30 bottlenose dolphins. For further informations pls don't hesitate to contact us.
