He really got my attention when, in one of my first terms there, he asked the lecture hall to come up with Washington's worst case scenario re: Nicaragua. Some contemporary sources estimate that about a hundred. Most part of the International Brigades, but some fought in the Republican army. But the highlight is the very fact itself: that Chinese citizens had fought in the war of Spain at a time when China itself was taking place another large-scale war against the Japanese invaders calling for the participation of all patriotic citizens including those in the diaspora. From the individual stories that have been able to investigate it follows that most of it came directly from China, but they were already settled mostly in Europe and to a lesser extent in the United States and other countries. They were immigrants, workers, doctors, journalists, small traders who came by choice, accident or sent by their political organization. [Marxism] Now in English: statement of Argentine PTS on new Pope and military junta
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == I am forwarding this at the request of Marxmail reader in Argentina. - Juan F Statement of the lawyer who questioned Bergoglio in connection with the fate of the disappeared “Bergoglio was partner in crime in the silence of the Church with genocidal dictatorship” (PTS, March 14, 2014) Myriam Bregman, lawyer of the Professional Center for Human Rights (CeProDH), also a militant of the PTS (Socialist Workers Party) and in charge of the accusation in the trial of the ESMA (Navy School of Mechanic), referred about Jorge Mario Bergoglio, recently chosen by The Vatican as Pope Francis I. During one of the criminal trials against the military genocides of the ESMA (occurred between 2010 and 2011), Bregman represented Patricia Walsh, daughter of the disappeared journalist andwriter Rodolfo Walsh, and she had the chance to question Jorge Bergoglio, in that time archbishop of Buenos Aires. She was one of the lawyers who demanded the Tribunal to cite him to appear in court as a witness in connection with the demand made for the catechist María Elena Funes, who accused him of facilitate the kidnap of the Jesuit priests Francisco Jalics and Orlando Yorio, who were members of the same order as Bergoglio. About that event, the lawyer said: “Unlike the image that today is given of him as a humble person, Bergoglio had no shame in using all the privileges that his investiture gave him, refusing to declare like an ordinary person in Court, so he claimed move the whole session to the Buenos Aires Curia headquarter, and we had to proceed in there. During his statement, the actual Pope avoided straight answers and he contradicted the previous witness. He tried to make a formal defense of his acting during the period that lasted the Jesuit’s priests kidnap by the militaries, standing that when he knew they had been kidnapped he informed to his superiors. He made some affirmations very serious as well, such as that two or three days later of the kidnapping he knew they were at the ESMA. Something that still today no many Mothers of Plaza de Mayo know about their own sons, despite of their intense search. How did he find out? He related that he interviewed Videla and Massera, but some time later. He also admitted that when Jalisc and Yorio were released they told him that there still were people kidnapped in the ESMA, and he didn’t do anything”. But what Myriam Bregman remembers most vividly of that questioning is when she asked him about the misappropriation of babies during the dictatorship: “I will always remember Bergoglio’s face. He answered that he found out recently about that, about ten years ago, which is year 2000, when the whole society knew about Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo search from at least year 1983, and some of the relatives of La Plata assert that he knew about the case of Ana Libertad Baratti de La Cuadra from year 1977”. Finally, Bregman pointed out that Bergoglio’s recent attitude and the brief answers by that time had consistency with silence and concealment adopted by the ecclesiastic hierarchy during the whole years after the dictatorship, systematically denying to provide files or documentation that they had. Is part of the Catholic Church policy that blessed and directly collaborated with dictatorship initiated in Argentina in 1976. It is not strange for me that priests as Christian Von Wernich, who are convicted for being authors of the genocide, of the plan of torture and extermination of the dictatorship, were not ever being excommunicated and they can still preside mass as any other priest. The same as father Grassi, convicted for child abuse, and for whose expulsion the Church that Bergoglio used to command till yesterday, didn’t move a finger. Nobody can deny that today Pope Francisco I covered up genocides and pedophiles in Church lines.” == Send list submissions to: Marxism@greenhouse.economics.utah.edu Set your options at: http://greenhouse.economics.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

Nidal Shehadeh, who began his hunger strike on 17 April as part of the mass hunger strike, was moved back from a public hospital to Ramleh prison two days prior. He is on hunger strike in protest of receiving inadequate medical treatment while in prison. Ms. Neddaf noted that all the prisoners on hunger strike in Ramleh prison are in isolated rooms. "When i dropped out of high school, and then, found myself in the streets before joining the matatu industry, I felt like i had lost the straggle.I watched those who competed and went to college take up jobs and build houses of their own. Note, for instance, that in none of the instances was an embassy compound actually targetted. In the Tblisi case the bomb was placed 200 yards from the embassy and targetted an empty parked vehicle. When the first two cases ocurred the Israeli gov't immediately blamed Iran and Hizb'allah. Now, we have another case, this time with an Iranian passport found on the bomber. == Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == For Immediate Release November 17, 2011 Contact: Macey Morales ALA alarmed at seizure of Occupy Wall Street library, loss of irreplaceable material CHICAGO -The People’s Library, a library constructed by the New York Occupy Wall Street movement, was seized in the early morning hours of Nov. 15, by the New York Police Department during a planned raid to evict Occupy Wall Street protesters from Zuccotti Park. The library held a collection of more than 5,000 items and provided free access to books, magazines, newspapers and other materials. According to ALA members who visited the site, the library reflected many of ALA’s core intellectual freedom values and best practices—a balanced, cataloged collection, representing diverse points of view, that included children’s books and reference service often provided by professional librarians. City officials assured library staff that library materials would be safely transported to a sanitation depot, but the majority of the collection is still missing and returned items were damaged, including laptops and other equipment. The likelihood of recovering all library materials is bleak, as witnesses reported that library materials were thrown into dumpsters by police and city sanitation workers. Longstanding ALA policy states: “The American Library Association deplores the destruction of libraries, library collections and property, and the disruption of the educational purpose by that act, whether it be done by individuals or groups of individuals and whether it be in the name of honest dissent, the desire to control or limit thought or ideas, or for any other purpose.” American Library Association (ALA) President Molly Raphael released the following statement regarding the destruction of the People’s Library: “The dissolution of a library is unacceptable. Libraries serve as the cornerstone of our democracy and must be safeguarded. An informed public constitutes the very foundation of a democracy, and libraries ensure that everyone has free access to information. “The very existence of the People’s Library demonstrates that libraries are an organic part of all communities. Libraries serve the needs of community members and preserve the record of community history. In the case of the People’s Library, this included irreplaceable records and material related to the occupation movement and the temporary community that it represented. “We support the librarians and volunteers of the Library Working Group as they re-establish the People’s Library.” The American Library Association is the oldest and largest library association in the world, with more than 60,000 members. [Marxism] Toward countering media frame of OO = violence
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == "We’ve Been Framed by Owen Li on Nov 8, 2011 Criticizing the black bloc for vandalism is like shooting fish in a barrel – both are pointless. I’m sure they will show up again so I want to reflect on recent media coverage and share my thoughts about our role as members of the occupy movement. The black bloc is nothing new so I took a look at how they were covered back when I first saw them in 2003. The first article that popped up in the SF Chronicle archives was a richly detailed 1,600 word article describing the 2/17/03 anti-war mobilization. According to the article, “1,000 protestors…vandalized businesses and clashed with police…before some were arrested.” But the march was unequivocally described as “peaceful.” Not “largely” peaceful, peaceful until violent, peaceful with rogue elements – just “peaceful.” How much attention did the black bloc receive? Just 33 words out of 1,600 – the sentence I quoted from is the only sentence that mentions them. Why the difference in coverage? Undeniably, media outlets desperately wanted some police vs. protester action. Maybe the exuberant and festive atmosphere just didn’t fit the usual violent frame for Oakland. But we also have to acknowledge that WE are to blame for feeding, reinforcing, and perpetuating this focus on vandalism. So here are some things we can do next time: ..." http://www.ellabakercenter.org/blog/2011/11/we%e2%80%99ve-been-framed/ -- - Juan Send list submissions to: Marxism@greenhouse.economics.utah.edu Set your options at: http://greenhouse.economics.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

[Marxism] Shooting near Occupy Oakland
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == There's been a shooting death near the Occupy Oakland encampment. It seems, so far, from what I can gather, that the victim may have been trying to hide at OO from someone. There was a fistfight and his aggressors fired as many as six shots. The man was struck in the head and collapsed near the entrance to the BART station. Occupiers surrounded the fallen man and formed human cordon around him until EMS arrived. Subsequently, or as a part of the same incident, a news cameraman or photographer was punched and suffered a concussion. The chief of police went to the site and, while not saying there was no connection to OO, he did confirm that the shooting was NEAR, not AT, the OO camp and that protesters attempted to succor the dying man. - juan Send list submissions to: Marxism@greenhouse.economics.utah.edu Set your options at: http://greenhouse.economics.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == (NOTE: I don't know whether this was actually presented at the GA in OO tonight.) _ Following is the proposal which will be considered by the Oakland General Assembly tonight Wed, Nov 9th. ANTI-VIOLENCE PROPOSAL: WHEREAS, OCCUPY OAKLAND SEEKS TO EXPAND THE OCCUPY MOVEMENT TO EFFECTIVELY DEMAND THAT THE 1% PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE AND THAT OUR SOCIETY MEET THE NEEDS OF THE 99%; and WHEREAS, TO THAT END OCCUPY OAKLAND HAS INVITED FAMILIES, CHILDREN, THE DISABLED, ELDERLY AND ALL OTHER SECTORS OF THE 99% TO OCCUPY OAKLAND EVENTS; and WHEREAS, PHYSICAL ATTACKS AGAINST PERSONS AND PROPERTY ENDANGER THE SAFETY OF THESE PERSONS AND LIMITS PARTICIPATION IN THE OCCUPY MOVEMENT; and WHEREAS, SUCH ATTACKS ARE CONDONED BY NEITHER THE MAJORITY OF OCCUPY MOVEMENT PARTICIPANTS NOR THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE 99%; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THOSE WHO LAUNCH PHYSICAL ATTACKS ON PEOPLE OR PROPERTY ARE NOT WELCOME TO DO SO AT OR NEAR OCCUPY OAKLAND EVENTS AND ENCAMPMENT. Our Nonviolence principles We adhere to the principles of nonviolence, whether by act or by word. The reasoning for nonviolence is practical and political as well as moral. Resources for learning about nonviolent political action, or ahimsa, are all over the web. It is not passive; rather, it seeks to force political change through specific and disciplined direct action that harms neither people nor property. This includes forms of education and persuasion, mass noncooperation, or individual acts of resistance. In modern times, nonviolent methods of action have been a powerful tool for social protest and revolutionary social and political change. India’s independence movement incorporated ahimsa; most recently, nonviolent resistance toppled dictatorships in Tunisia and Egypt. In the United States, Martin Luther King espoused nonviolence for the civil rights movement, as did Cesar Chavez in the later UFW campaigns. It is particularly apropos to the Occupy movement, and is practiced by the numerous #Occupy groups all over the globe. There are numerous variants of nonviolence guidelines. In general, we ask that individuals and organizations participating in #OCC99 meetings or actions consent to honor the following very general guidelines of nonviolence: We acknowledge the value of each person. This is fundamental: recognising the dignity and humanity of oneself and others. We refuse to mistreat our opponent as an enemy. We recognise that we all have part of the truth; no one has all of it. No one is all ‘right or all ‘wrong’. Our campaign information gathering, educations, and actions should reflect this. Our actions emphasise openness to promote communication and democratic processes. We work for processes that express ‘power with’ not ‘power over’ others. Empowering all involved in a campaign is important. We promote democratic structures (internally and externally) to maximise self-determination. Our means (behaviours and actions) are consistent with our ends (of affirming life, opposing oppression and seeking justice, valuing every person). Our strategy must be based on this principle, we cannot justify a ‘victory’ obtained through violent or deceitful methods. We are willing to undergo suffering rather than inflict it. Refusing to inflict suffering is based on the value of each person and is a strategy that draws attention to our commitment and our cause. We will not violently fight back if attacked. We recognise jail may be a consequence of our actions; filling the jails may be a strategy. We commit to prepare ourselves for nonviolent action according to the guidelines agreed. If necessary, we will attempt to arrange orientation sessions or workshops in nonviolence to better understand and practice this commitment. [Marxism] Call for a "Third Palestinian Intifada"
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Activism News Activists preparing for "third intifada" Adam Morrow and Khaled Moussa al-Omrani The Electronic Intifada Cairo 11 May 2011 CAIRO (IPS) - Following the February ouster of Egypt’s longstanding President Hosni Mubarak, calls have been circulating in Egypt and throughout the region for a “Third Intifada” to begin 15 May. “Unlike the first two Palestinian uprisings, the proposed Third Intifada is meant to involve the entire Arab world,” Egyptian journalist and political analyst Abdelhalim Kandil told IPS. It began with the appearance of a Facebook page in early March calling for a “Third Intifada” against the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestinian land. The page, reportedly founded by Arab pro-Palestinian groups, set the launch date for 15 May — the day on which hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were driven from their homes in 1948 to make way for the nascent State of Israel. The page attracted some 230,000 members within two weeks, prompting Israeli officials to lodge a complaint with the popular California-based social networking website. On 29 March, Facebook removed the page — which had at that point amassed hundreds of thousands of fans — claiming that its contents were found to “promote violence.” The page was almost immediately replaced with several copycat pages, however, which reiterated calls for “the liberation of Palestine from the [Mediterranean] Sea to the [Jordan] River” and “the return of Palestinian refugees to their homes in historical Palestine” in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 194 of 1948. An Arabic-language website called the “Third Palestinian Intifada” (www.3rdintifada.com) appeared soon afterward, providing a general plan of action. The site calls for peaceful protests on Friday and Saturday (13 and 14 May) at Israeli embassies and consulates worldwide, including those in western capitals, “to express our rage about the ongoing occupation of Palestine and the expulsion of millions of Palestinians from their rightful homes.” [...] Full story: http://electronicintifada.net/content/activists-preparing-third-intifada/9937 -- - Juan Send list submissions to: Marxism@greenhouse.economics.utah.edu Set your options at: http://greenhouse.economics.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

But young leaders of the revolution declined an invitation to meet with her, citing Washington's tepid support for anti-government protesters over the course of the 18-day rebellion. "We refused to meet Clinton due to the US administration's vacillating position and contradictory statements as the revolution unfolded," Islam Lutfi, spokesman for Egypt's Coalition of Revolutionary Youth, told IPS. [Marxism] Japan crisis: Yakuza to the Rescue!
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Yes, really. == Yakuza to the Rescue by Jake Adelstein Info March 18, 2011 | 9:00am Even Japan’s infamous mafia groups are helping out with the relief efforts and showing a strain of civic duty. Jake Adelstein reports on why the police don’t want you to know about it. Plus, more coverage of Japan’s crisis. The worst of times sometimes brings out the best in people, even in Japan’s “losers” a.k.a. the Japanese mafia, the yakuza. Hours after the first shock waves hit, two of the largest crime groups went into action, opening their offices to those stranded in Tokyo, and shipping food, water, and blankets to the devastated areas in two-ton trucks and whatever vehicles they could get moving. The day after the earthquake the Inagawa-kai (the third largest organized crime group in Japan which was founded in 1948) sent twenty-five four-ton trucks filled with paper diapers, instant ramen, batteries, flashlights, drinks, and the essentials of daily life to the Tohoku region. An executive in Sumiyoshi-kai, the second-largest crime group, even offered refuge to members of the foreign community—something unheard of in a still slightly xenophobic nation, especially amongst the right-wing yakuza. The Yamaguchi-gumi, Japan’s largest crime group, under the leadership of Tadashi Irie, has also opened its offices across the country to the public and been sending truckloads of supplies, but very quietly and without any fanfare. Here's a translated snippet: "From an pro-independence leader in the late 1960s of the last century, Gadafi has become a capitalist dictator partnered with the European Union, to which it provides the fine petroleum of his desert and is accepted by the United States as one with whom it has cohabitated in recent years. The price of the metamorphosis has been, and is being, paid by the Libyan people. "The same ones who would cast doubt on the reality of these facts also suggest, though not openly, that something similar [i.e. imperialist manipulation] is taking place with the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt. Hundreds of protesters have collided with the authorities," said South Korea's largest-selling Chosun Ilbo newspaper on Thursday, as top news on its website. Now finally, the global cascade of "Jasmine revolutions" in the Middle East and North Africa appears to have entered North Korea. "Chosun posted a North Korea map with large red circles around multiple cities to mark "riot zones", adding more drama to the report. ?One of the circles is the town of Sinuiju on the border with China. "Hundreds of people clashed with security forces ... The military was deployed to quell the demonstration, leaving some protesters wounded," said Chosun. While the protest was sparked by a crackdown in a market, it was "an eruption of long pent-up discontent", it said."
