The Venezuelan government announced on July 11 that it had seized a factory
of the US company Kimberly Clark Corporation — producer of numerous
personal, feminine, and baby care brands including Huggies, Kotex, and many
others, TeleSUR English said
<http://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Venezuela-Seizes-Kimberly-Clark-Plan-to-Tackle-Shortages-Begun-20160712-0013.html>
that
day. The government will hand the factory to its workers to continue
manufacturing after the firm said it couldn't produce.

[Marxism] Help support the Irish revolutionary organisation eirigi

https://rdln.wordpress.com/2016/07/13/support-the-irish-revolution-donate-to-eirigi/

eirigi was founded in 2006 by just half a dozen young people who left the
Provos in opposition to the rightward evolution of the Republican Movement;
the last straw was Sinn Fein's support for policing in the north.
Subsequently, a layer of former prisoners, veterans of the armed struggle,
joined and the organisation quickly expanded around Ireland.

It has been to the forefront in championing working class interests against
the bank bailouts, homelessness (and the tragedy of the ghost estates),
workplace rights and conditions, opposition to the Shell-to-Sea pipeline,
and opposition to partition and the continuing occupation of the six
north-eastern counties of Ireland.

If you click on some of the link pieces on the url above, you will find
videos of eirigi actions and several interviews with leading figures in the
new movement.

eirigi is a totally working class organisation and its members are largely
drawn form the poorest sections of the Irish working class. Much of what
it produces is free.

So if you are sympathetic to the struggle for Irish national and social
liberation, please consider donating to their online donations site. Every
little bit helps.

Go raibh maith agaibh.

I will follow up on the twitters you mention. Seymour is a brilliant
analyst though, when he is not being dragged down the byways of
Lacanianism. I have just read Mason on Jacobin and he is very good.

Bastani, has an odd manner of hopping around as he talks, but if you listen
carefully he has a very sharp mind.

I like Owen Jones, because he is gay (we all have our weaknesses!), but I
concede he is not as tough as he should be.

I think there will be a legal challenge to the last minute exclusions of
members. The Party took members' money on one set of terms and then they
changed the terms and that is breach of contract is it not?

Given the late changes to the voting conditions, I am convinced that the
legal advice the NEC got must have indicated a successful challenge in the
courts was very likely and so they moved to try and make the site of the
electoral battle to come as uneven as they could for the Corbyn forces.

But every shonky trick they pull out, just increases public anger and stirs
up the necessary longing for a more just world.

Getting exciting is it not?

Hi folks,

this week I'm not going to say much about stuff we've stuck up on the blog
in the past week. Instead, I'm going to concentrate on some important
articles about NZ working class history that we've put on the blog since we
began back in 2011.

*This month marks the 65th anniversary of the wharfies' return to work in
1951, so let's start with our material on 1951.*

Interview with 1951 wharfies' leader Jock Barnes (conducted in 1991 by one
of our blog collective, Daphna Whitmore):
Part One: https://rdln.wordpress.com/2011/06/15/jock-barnes/
Part Two:
https://rdln.wordpress.com/2011/06/19/interview-with-jock-barnes-part-2/

And our major feature article on the background to the 1951 dispute:
https://rdln.wordpress.com/2012/11/23/behind-the-1951-waterfront-lockout/

*In terms of workers involved, 1913 was the biggest industrial dispute in
NZ history*.
Check out:
https://rdln.wordpress.com/2013/01/14/the-1913-general-strike-relevant-to-us-in-2013/

*Some recent issues:*

Low pay, longer hours and less social mobility - welcome to 21st century NZ
capitalism:
https://rdln.wordpress.com/2012/02/08/low-pay-longer-hours-and-less-social-mobility/

Pay and income gaps continue to widen - but where's the opposition?:

Ways to wreck the teabreak-busting bill:
https://rdln.wordpress.com/2014/10/29/ways-to-wreck-the-teabreak-busting-bill/

A strange paradox - can NZ workers really be happy with this crap?:

Meatworkers battle with Talleys - important for all workers:

*And check out our articles on the Ports of Auckland dispute:*

*And our selection of articles on the firefighters: *
https://rdln.wordpress.com/2016/04/26/firefighters-coverage-on-redline/

*Lastly, we must never forget Pike River. Here's our collection of
articles on what was really the killing of 29 workers:*

More cynical still, although it may just be the time of night, is that the NEC

Anybody joining after 12th Jan is completely excluded. Anybody who was a
registered supporter in last year’s election can pay 25 pound for a vote this
time (though not including new members). A possible loophole is to join Unite
or similar for an affiliate vote. That’s what I’m going to try tomorrow. For
anyone of a slightly cynical mind, the regressive flat-fee and the timeline

This is not the end of the coup. Corbyn left and then the NEC ruled that
anybody joining in the last 6 months (inc. me) will not be eligible to vote.
That's a great majority of Corbyn’s base.

Much encouraged by Anthony's kind remarks, I thought I would venture
another post. The news that the NEC of the Labour Party had ruled 18-14
that Corbyn would automatically be on the ballot in the forthcoming
challenge has been greeted with jubilation by the Left and absolute dismay
by the Centre and Right of the Labour Party.

One should read the vile and the bile on the twitter feed in response to
Paul Mason's triumphal tweet hailing Corbyn's victory to realise just how
divided the Labour Party is at the present.

The Right have played all their cards against Corbyn. That failed and now
they must face an election. The Centre and the Right have set fire to
their own party and used every opportunity in the Murdoch Media to thrash
the leadership. As a result Labour has gone down in the polls and
predictably they have blamed Corbyn.

The intelligent ones on the right who do not believe their own lies and
propaganda are faced with a terrible set of choices, now. They know that
they cannot match the surge to Corbyn. They now have to split or shut up.
Over 85% of the constituency parties supported Corbyn, and that means that
the threat of deselection has become very real for the Right.

British politics cannot now return to the status quo where there was a
universal consensus among the political elites as to what constituted
common sense. Amidst all the chaos, it could emerge that Corbyn is the only
one with a plan. A re-election campaign is a blessing for Corbyn, because
it plays to his strength, which is making appeals, out in the public arena
and away from parliament, for social justice on behalf of and to those who
need it most, that is the English, Scottish and Welsh working classes.

That is why I personally am inclined to suspect there will be no election
campaign. Poor old Angela Eagle who has been put up by the Blairite cynics
has said she welcomes the election. She will not enjoy the experience.

A note on the usual phrase that this is a battle for the soul of the Labour
Party. That metaphor disguises a piece of neo-Platonism. There is no such
thing as the soul of the Labour Party. This is a battle to construct a
soul. At the moment the Left is enjoying a renewed strength thanks to the
Blairite coup. As Richard Seymour puts it - Worst. Coup. Ever.

Late last month in Aspen, Colo., Kerry said the most important thing the
administration is doing to ramp up the effort to defeat extremists in Syria is
to “reach an understanding” with the Russian government about how to deal with
the terrorists there, which he names as the Islamic State, often referred to as
Daesh, and Jabhat al-Nusra, al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch. As I reported, Kerry and
President Obama have proposed to Moscow increased cooperation against those
groups, especially Jabhat al-Nusra, in exchange for Russia convincing Syrian
President Bashar al-Assad to abide by the crumbling cease-fire and lay off
bombing the other rebels.

[Marxism] Against Refugee Curfews During Baalbek International Festival

http://al-manshour.org/node/7016

On Monday, July 11th, 2016, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA)
reported that the Baalbek-Hermel governorate will impose a curfew for
Syrian refugees from 6 PM to 6 AM during the upcoming annual Baalbek
International Festival, which takes place from Friday, July 22, 2016 until
August, 28, 2016.

While Governor Bashir Khoder verbally denied extending the existing refugee
curfew, no official statements have been passed by the Baalbek-Hermel
governorate indicating that the NNA reported false news.

Many areas in East Lebanon have already imposed tight curfews on Syrian
refugees, and more have been imposed after the recent attacks in the
village of Al-Qaa, where 7 suicide attacks took place in late June,
murdering 5 and wounding 28 others. While Governor Khoder and the
Baalbek-Hermel governorate may consider the massacre in Al Qaa and recent
threats around the country to be reference points, the Lebanese Internal
Security Forces confirmed that the attackers were not refugees or among
them; in fact, they came through the Lebanese-Syrian border.

This is a form of collective punishment and a racist policy to implement on
people who are fleeing from such atrocities. We believe that these values
do not reflect Baalbek International Festival and their performers.

Therefore, we call on the Baalbek-Hermel Governorate to release an official
statement denying the curfews, or to reverse them.

We also call on the this year’s performers to cancel their performances
unless these policies are lifted. This year’s performers are the following:

Caracalla Dance Theater - Saturday, July 23

Jean Michel Jarre - Saturday, July 30

Mika - Thursday, August 4

Bob James Quartet - Friday, August 12

This message can be circulated to Hungarian studies organizations and to
Hungarian organizations in general. Even if some of them may not be in
sympathy, it is important that they know there is a public campaign around this.
We cannot assume that Hungarians in Canada and elsewhere will be hostile. I
recall that in 2003, at the peak of the anti-war movement, a Hungarian-Canadian
organization showed up at the demonstrations. And I was able to find their
newsletter at the broad left bookstore associated with the Communist Party of
Canada.

*From** Debtor Nation: The History of America in Red Ink*

Borrowers unable to pay off the principal on their balloon mortgages faced
foreclosures. Foreclosures during the Depression resulted as much from the
drop in home owner's income as from the withdrawal of short-term mortgage
funds from the market, making refinance impossible. By 1933 the mortgage
market was effectively dead, and with it the housing industry.

"Without mortgages, the housing industry collapsed. Housing investment
fell from $68 billion in 1929 to $17.6 billion in 1932. By 1934, the
construction industry, as a whole, was one-tenth the size it had been in
the late 1920s.Wage earners from a third of the families on relief were
employed in construction. Indirectly, the collapse of the housing industry
hit other sectors of the economy as well. Construction also had tremendous
linkages to other sectors of the economy to a much greater extent than
most industries. Ten percent of American factories manufactured building
materials for construction. Twenty percent of freight cars carried those
materials across the country. Unskilled labor carried material. Skilled
labor put it together. Metal and wood of all shapes and types were needed
for almost any project. Muscle and machine were needed alike. Clearly,
restoring the economy turned on restoring the construction industry. What
was less certain was how to bring about new construction. New Deal
policymakers focused on the housing industry in their efforts to restart
the economy because it had fallen so hard and so fast. ...

"In 1932 and 1933, lenders foreclosed on half a million homes."

What a time to be in London. My family's long-planned vacation has given us
a ringside seat for the greatest humiliations suffered by Britain since
boxer Frank Bruno tried to take down a young Mike Tyson.

First the British exit — Brexit — from the European Union on June 23, which
people in London overwhelmingly voted against, becomes the law of the land,
and then, just three days later, England's national football team loses in
the European Championships 2-1 to Iceland (*Iceland!*).

It is no exaggeration that, like Frank Bruno, people are stumbling in a bit
of a daze. The most repeated line has been: “How the hell did we manage to
get tossed from Europe twice in four days?”
