Women like Amanda and Erika also do the grunt work of pro-white activism.
And women like Tara and Ayla follow the time-honored tradition of bringing
up racist children—that #trad lifestyle they admire so much that once
included taking the family out for a day’s entertainment at public
lynchings. These women present outsiders with an “acceptable face” of white
supremacy, a soft, palatable point of entry with the nostalgic glow of an
idealized, wishfully apolitical past. This attempt to neutralize the stigma
of more overt racism makes women of The Movement valuable recruiting tools,
far more insidious than skinhead thugs or robed Klansmen. To understand the
radicalization of white supremacy in the United States, we need to
comprehend its roots as a complex, extensive ecosystem with unexpected hubs
of power.

[Marxism] 1968 equal pay struggle at Fords, Dagenham

Seems incredible to think that this struggle took place in 1968.

"In 1968 three struggles by working class women in Britain helped inspire
the formation of the women’s liberation movement there: Hull fishermen’s
wives fought for better safety on trawlers, despite being told by the
bosses to keep quiet; London bus conductresses rebelled for the right to
become drivers; and women machinists at the Ford motor company’s giant
plant at Dagenham went on strike for equal pay. The Ford women’s strike
led to the formation of the National Joint Action Committee on Women’s
Equal Rights, a union-based group focussed on equal pay and women’s rights
at work. Over four decades later, the Ford strike has been dramatised, and
partly fictionalised, as a film: Made in Dagenham, directed by Nigel Cole
(Calendar Girls), produced by Steven Woolley (The Crying Game, Scandal,
Interview with the Vampire) and partner Elizabeth Karlsen (The Crying
Game, Hollow Reed, Sounds like Teen Spirit), written by Billy Ivory, who
wrote for TV series such as Minder and Common as Muck, and starring Sally
Hawkins as strike leader Rita O’Grady, Daniel Mays as her husband Eddie and
Bob Hoskins as Albert, the women’s shop steward. The theme song is sung by
1960s British pop star Sandie Shaw, who was a Fords Dagenham punch-card
operator several years before the 1968 strike.

"The film does a good job in portraying working class life in England in
the later 1960s and the sense that was in the air at the time that things
didn’t have to be that way, the kind of “sixties spirit” which spawned so
much rebellion and social change. At the same time, however, the film’s
producers have been involved in making some. . .

Five months before the March 29 leaving date, talks on how to avoid an
acrimonious and chaotic exit of Britain from the European Union are on a
knife-edge. A ‘hard’ Brexit would be a political and economic earthquake
with global ramifications, but even if an agreement is reached the profound
political crisis gripping Britain is set to deepen, as the ruling
Conservative Party shatters into warring factions and the possibility grows
of its replacement by a Labour Party government led by the avowedly
socialist Jeremy Corbyn.

Most pundits expect a. . .

Why do people accept capitalist ideology as common sense? Why are the
problems of capitalist society typically seen as problems of society in
general? For instance, the fact that hundreds of millions of people in the
world go without even basic nourishment, shelter and clothing is usually
said to be a problem of ‘overpopulation’ rather than one of capitalist
social relations under which profit rates over-ride people’s actual needs.
Similarly, inequality is seen as the result of people’s different abilities
rather than the workings of the system within which those abilities exist
and are constrained.

Crude, but typical, left-wing explanations of political consciousness
revolve around the idea that people are brainwashed by the media and
education system into supporting capitalism. Such ‘explanations’ are even
often put forward as ‘Marxist’. But this was not Marx’s view of how
capitalist ideology and forms of consciousness arise.

Marx’s analysis of the capitalist system showed that the inner workings of
this mode of production are reproduced at the surface level of society in a
thoroughly. . .

Could a government be as devoted to the people as the current French
government is to the 1%? In this article, Eric Toussaint puts forward a
series of proposals to those currently struggling on the ground, and
argues that a future Left government can only begin to remedy the harm
caused by neoliberal policies if it takes a collectively elaborated
programme as its basis.

Yellow rage through Syrian eyes

Abdulmonam Eassa , Sameer
Al-Doumy , Zakaria Abdelkafi

 Monday 10 December 2018

*Paris** -- Of the thousands of people witnessing the “yellow vest”
protests in Paris over the past few weeks, three young men have had a
decidedly different perspective.*

*Cameras in hand, they have had great fun at the demonstrations, exchanging
knowing looks, smiles and jokes whenever they crossed paths. Every once in
a while, a painful memory or a philosophical reflection would pierce
through the merriment. Then the good humor would return.*

*They are Syrians who have seen friends and loved ones die and their
hometowns reduced to rubble. Having escaped war, they are now covering
violence in a European capital. With a smile.*

*The “yellow vest” protests have gone on for four straight weekends and
have been some of the worst rioting France has seen in decades, with
hundreds arrested, millions of euros in damage and four people dead. The
police have fired tear gas, water cannon and stun grenades. The worst
damage has come over the past two weekends, when vandals and trouble makers
joined the original “yellow vest” demonstrators protesting against
declining living standards*

Given its inherent complexity, the international media have so far
largely failed to make sense of the puzzling yellow vest phenomenon,
with many reports lapsing into an uncritical regurgitation of the
disdaining moralism proffered by the French bourgeoisie. One columnist
for The Guardian even wrote that they had “never seen the kind of wanton
destruction that surrounded me on some of the smartest streets of Paris
on Saturday — such random, hysterical hatred, directed not just towards
the riot police but at shrines to the French republic itself such as the
Arc de Triomphe.” For good measure, the author added that “an extreme
wing of the gilets jaunes has turned towards the nihilist detestation of
democratic institutions and symbols of success and wealth.”

On Monday, the unreconstructed soixante-huitard class traitor Daniel
Cohn-Bendit decided to chime in as well, condemning the gilets jaunes —
true to style as a classical Bourbon reactionary — for their “extreme”
and “frightening” violence, while saying nothing of the notorious
brutality of the French riot police. Some of the most horrific injuries
inflicted by the CRS and the BAC on Saturday included a young woman in
Paris who lost an eyeball after being shot in the head with a rubber
bullet, and a man in Nantes who lost a hand after he accidentally picked
up a stun grenade thinking it was a teargas canister. The gilets jaunes,
of course, have yet to deploy armored vehicles, fire any weapons or
dismember a policeman. Their “violence”, as Pamela Anderson — of all
people! — has so cogently argued, has been almost entirely symbolic.

For all his bourgeois hallucinations, however, it should be clear that
Cohn-Bendit’s derision of the gilets jaunes is far from an isolated
occurrence; indeed, it neatly reflects the intense contempt in which the
French ruling class have historically held the uneducated jacques
bonhommes, the insolent frondeurs, the ill-mannered sans-culottes — in
short, all the uncultured peasants and lumpen who somehow mustered the
conceit to insubordinate the divine authority of the king. The
widespread use of the term casseurs is a testament to this, as is the
statement by Interior Minister Christophe Castaner last week that “the
movement has given birth to a monster.” It was a choice of words that
would not have stood out among the litany of dehumanizing abuse the
Versaillais once hurled at the communards, before proceeding to
indiscriminately massacre over 20,000 working-class Parisians accused of
having participated in the revolt of 1871. As the celebrated young
French author Édouard Louis astutely put it, the gilets jaunes, just
like their predecessors, “represent a sort of Rorschach test for a large
part of the bourgeoisie, [forcing] them to express their class contempt
and the violence that they usually only express in an indirect way.”

The reality of the matter is that it is not the movement itself, but the
neoliberal restructuring of French society that has given birth to a
monster — the monster of a resurgent nationalist far-right. It should
not come as a surprise, then, that the gilet jaune phenomenon started
out on the wrong foot, as an anti-tax protest initiated by a number of
people with known anti-immigrant views and prior association with
far-right groups. In the first weeks of the roadblocks, the media widely
reported a number of disturbing incidents of racist, sexist and
homophobic abuse, especially in some of the more peripheral areas of
France. It is also undeniable that several ultra-nationalist,
monarchist, fascist and neo-Nazi elements have actively participated in
the clashes in Paris in recent weeks.

Nevertheless, despite this problematic start and the continued reference
to symbols of national unity like the tricolor and the Marseillaise, the
yellow vest uprising quickly overflowed the capacity of far-right
elements or Le Pen’s Rassemblement National to claim the movement as
their own. As the protests spread like a wildfire and spilled over into
a generalized popular insurrection against the child-king Macron and his
neoliberal stooges, hundreds of thousands of self-declared “apolitical”
citizens — most of them first-time protesters with no prior street
fighting experience — were drawn into the roadblocks and mass
demonstrations. As a result, the social composition and ideological
orientation of the movement has become increasingly diverse with every
passing act of the revolt, opening up to a greatly expanded constituency
between the relatively conservative Act I and the near-insurrectionary
Acts III and IV.

Philosophical Poem
by John Ciardi

The disease of civilization is not tools, citizen.
Ignorance might be closer to it.
Politics closer. But only Money
Will hit the brass tacks everyone wants to get down to
Squarely on the head.

Above all, I have no case against human nature.
Whatever that is, I like it.
I like mechanics with wrenches,
Taxi drivers' photos on licenses,
Drunks lighting cigarettes.
What the hell else is there to like
After you've kissed your wife and gone to sleep?

I like everything but important people being important.
And academic people being academic.
What I like least is bookkeepers
Spending their human eyes on accounts receivable,
Interest receivable, payment due, balance on hand.
And columns of soldiers marching.

Q: How would you describe the current protests taking place in France
from an ideological point of view? Are they an expression of a class
struggle?

A: Objectively, it is certainly a class struggle since it is a protest
of people from the working class and lower middle classes against
inequality and the leading elites. But it started mainly in the
peripheral regions of France, which have been marginalized by almost
thirty years of neo-liberal and European Union policies. Though
according to the polls this protest is supported by 70% to 80% of the
French population, its core is concentrated around what we can call the
depoliticized petite-bourgeoisie, which makes it sometimes appear
“classless”. Large cities and their suburbs are less active in this
movement than peripheral regions, and workers in local industries are
more active than the ones from large industries. It is still a quite
spontaneous movement, but nevertheless a class movement.
