Back in 2005 I studied John Saville's papers at the University of Hull's Brynmor Jones library and realised what a struggle was involved in the production of The Reasoner. There are some eerie similarities between Dylann Roof's manifesto and the rhetoric of the far right down here in New Zild. Roof seems to have had a connection with Countercurrents, a website that mixes with neo-Nazi rhetoric with cultural pretentiousness, and Countercurrents' most prolific contributor is New Zealander Kerry Bolton, who is also a right hand man of Fred Toben, one of the world's most active Holocaust deniers http://readingthemaps.blogspot.co.nz/2011/01/surprise-surprise-boltons-anti-semitism.html Roof's obsession with Rhodesia brings to mind the elegaic writings of New Zealand right-wingers like Colin Rawle and John Ansell, who see Ian Smith's regime as a sort of last stand of the British Empire and European civilisation. An article Rawle wrote for Ansell's website a couple of years ago reads almost like a rough draft for Roof's text. I discussed Rawle's text in a blog posthttp://readingthemaps.blogspot.co.nz/2012/10/down-and-out-in-remuera.html , but I notice that it has disappeared from Ansell's website in the days since the Charleston killings.
