you make me *Pine* for the days when i used XEmacs' VM.

but seriously, if more people would consider using a real email
application like Thunderbird or something written by serious people,
these problems would vanish at little cost but the learning curve.

i can talk to Lou about the idea of allowing HTML on the list. we
disallowed it a decade ago because many people were not using
HTML-capable email apps. maybe that's a list rule we can dispense with.
but its part of the same problem. people using inferior email apps get
garbage on their screen.

The diacritics appear correctly in Microsoft Outlook as well, but not in the
correct font. Still the words are spelled correctly in Polish, Serbo-Croat, and
Magyar.--TB

they render fine here in Thunderbird ... is handled fine in the archives
as well:

  http://lists.econ.utah.edu/pipermail/marxism/2011-January/073621.html

but your posts are coming in UTF-8 character set (encoded in base64) and
i think some people's email apps will not correctly translate to screen.

Allowing the mailing list to send and receive messages in HTML would solve that
problem. It may create other problems of which I am not aware, however.--TB

I have noticed that when my posts appear here, it is not just curly
quote marks and em and en dashes that become question marks: anything
beyond a very basic character set gets mutilated. For example, see how
these three Polish, Serbo-Croat and Hungarian names come out: Łódź,
Čošić, Ütő. Can this be changed at all?

They all look fine in Gnus, but then Gnus just knows what you mean to
say ahead of time. ;)

Lou:

set yourself up a gmail account and then use that for SMTP outbound in
Thunderbird. works like a charm. skype me for details.

or find out who is the SMTP server for the ISP you are using

incidentally, your posts look find IN Thunderbird.

any good Jewish delis down there ;-)
