One option would be in my eyes to write a small function which is executed if not certain headers are found in the configuration file. which will then read all values and backup the file to some place and write a new one with the static values. On a modern computers it's don't important :) For other systems we make
own realization of glib-functions... if needed :)
b) moving the funcs to separate .c file just kills inline'ing.
Modern compilers may automatically make some function inline or not. In
mc-ru-fork we was attempt to use own standart _GNU_INLINE_ (make some
checks in configure-script)

Thanks, it never occurred to me. I'm going to ask ext3 developers about that. Filesystem doesnt necessarily mean disk-filesystem. It's a job for some overlaying FS. (9P is your friend ;-P) I checked 9P. It's a nice stuff, but in reality I don't see it in near future on my stock debian testing desktop. To the contrary patching mc to add this feature is quite possible and much simpler, from my standpoint. It's just a simple symlink tracking it can't be *that* difficult... Maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to produce a patch for that, together with a friend of mine, would you guys be willing to add such a patch to the trunk?
