Re: [MCN-L] THoughts about App vs. Responsive Web site?

2016-10-28 Thread Tamsen Young
Hi Floyd,

We are about to launch (in December) our first cell phone tour of an
exhibition. In researching the options, we decided that creating a
web-based app was the best solution for us. Since the cell phone tour is
for an exhibition on view for a limited time, we did not see how we could
communicate the value of downloading an app to their phones.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, a traditional app would not be as
accessible to as many visitors, as many of the 'affordable' options are for
iPhones only. The vendor we selected also has a dial-in feature for
visitors without smartphones. Since our audience has a significant older
population, this was not an insignificant consideration.

Hope this is helpful.

Best,

Re: [MCN-L] THoughts about App vs. Responsive Web site?

2016-10-28 Thread Matt Morgan
For this question, are you talking about on the visitor's own devices?
Others may have data on this, where I just have opinions/experience, but

a) getting most people to use anything takes effort
b) getting anyone to install and use an app takes a LOT of effort.

If you're talking about the loaner devices, an app still makes certain
things easier, especially related to offline, controls, screen real
estate, that kind of thing. But if you have pervasive good connections
and a staff that's more skilled in webapps, that could tip the balance
in that direction. Also, for most of us, web dev still makes
experimentation, deployment, and iteration easier.

2016-10-28 Thread Sweeting III, Floyd
Colleagues,

Can you share your thoughts regarding the use of an App as opposed to using a
Responsive Web site as part of the visitor experience?

Also how you feel about downloading content to personal devices rather than
just accessing live online?

Thanks,

Re: [MCN-L] loan of ipods to visitors without smartphones

2016-10-28 Thread Douglas Hegley
We are about to roll out over 400 such devices ... tomorrow!
Stay tuned.
FYI: smaller sample tests have gone very well. We ask to hold a photo ID
until the device is returned. Lots of details and logistics, and we can
share that story as this grand experiment continues.

[MCN-L] loan of ipods to visitors without smartphones

2016-10-28 Thread Sweeting III, Floyd
Do any of you loan out ipods or other devices to visitors who wish to use your
app but do not have smartphones?

If so, how does it all work from a practical standpoint? Problems? Concerns?

Thanks,
