[MCN-L] ESF Conference on the Networked Humanities

2010-05-12 Thread Rob Stein
Hi MCN'ers,

I wanted to pass along some information about what looks to be a pretty
interesting conference hosted by the European Science Foundation this fall
for your interest:

ESF-COST High-Level Research Conference
Networked Humanities: Art History in the Web
9-14 October 2010
Acquafredda di Maratea, Italy

Conference Link: http://www.esf.org/index.php?id=6726
Draft Program:
http://www.esf.org/activities/esf-conferences/details/2010/confdetail342/342-preliminary-programme.html

Since the earliest times, new technologies have contributed to profound
scientific advances and have transformed the ways we can do research. It is
claimed today that the World Wide Web offers revolutionary models of
scientific cooperation, which promise to instantiate a utopian democracy of
knowledge. This claim has repeatedly been associated with the development
and introduction of a collaborative Web, commonly referred to as 'Web 2.0'
as well as its offspring, a semantically enriched Web 3.0 still in the
making The aim of this conference is to bring together art historians and
other researchers (including digital humanists) in order to investigate the
intersection between the web and collaborative research processes, via an
examination of electronic media-based cooperative models in the history of
art and beyond.

The conference will not only be an occasion to exchange ideas and present
relevant projects in the field, but, with contributions spanning from art
history (and digital art) to philosophy and cultural studies, from
psychology and sociology of knowledge to computer graphics, from semiotics
to curatorial practices it will offer a unique forum for the representation
of both diversified and complementary approaches to the topic of Networked
humanities.

Conference format:

   - lectures by invited high level speakers
   - short talks by young early stage researchers
   - poster sessions, round table and open discussion periods
   - forward look panel discussion about future developments

Invited speakers will include:

   - *Ira Assent* (Aaalborg University, DK)

[MCN-L] The Case of the Missing MCN-L Posts

2009-05-13 Thread Rob Stein
Hi Richard,

I've noticed a few things recently... Specifically:

I received a message from Sue Grinols at 8:36 am responding to a mail
entitled Re: [MCN-L] Digital Imaging Services Available, but did not
receive the original post from Renee Montgomery until 11:56 am later
this morning...

Likewise:

Yesterday, I saw some activity from Floyd Sweeting and Ari Davidow
responding to a message from Perian Sully inquiring about Re: [MCN-L]
Looking for a New Webblast/Email/Metrics Service at 2:03 am and 6:13 am
respectively, but did not receive Perian's original email until 11:23 am
this morning...

I seem to experience the case of the missing email fairly frequently,
and have checked by spam gateway to ensure that it's not getting held up
there... Wondering if others are experiencing the same?

Rob

Subject: [MCN-L] The Case of the Missing MCN-L Posts

Hi everyone,

It appears that we have a bit of technological mystery on our hands.
Occasionally I've received reports from people who don't see some of the
posts that other see (and reply to), or post messages that never
show up. It appears to be an ongoing problem that doesn't seem to
have a pattern and that I've not been able to replicate reliably.

I would appreciate your assistance trying to track down the source of
this problem. If you personally notice that you're missing sent
messages, or that your message are not appearing on the list soon
after you post them, please contact me directly. If possible
include the subject of the post and the date/time that it was sent.
If you're missing posts, let me know where the holes are. ;)

Thanks,
Richard Urban

[MCN-L] Website benchmarking

1970-01-03 Thread Rob Stein
I find Google Analytics to be a quite amazing tool that can go into very
forensic detail if you've got enough time to spend :-)

I think perhaps a more useful question would be why is there so little
information about web site traffic and statistics between museums? MCN
seems to be a perfect place to trade that sort of information. I'd be
willing to export traffic statistics from Google Analytics if others are
willing to do the same?

Perhaps we can agree on a high level set of stats that are useful for
benchmarking against peers that can be properly anonymized so as not to
be too specific to any one museum's investments in keyword optimization
and Ad campaigns?

We make some of this information available on
http://dashboard.imamuseum.org. This is certainly less information than
what would be useful to this audience, but I'd be willing to open that
up more significantly.

Any Takers?

That seems to beg a question: what stats service is useful? As a fairly
dinky Museum, we use the best free service, GoogleAnalytics. How badly
do people think that skews?

Like you say, these sites are ok for trends but do not give anything
close to accurate figures for traffic your numbers.

When we noticed a shift in our web statistics we wondered if it was just
our site or was it something that was affecting all other museums.

We found the two following sites very useful in providing us with an
opportunity to compare our performance to that of other museums.
http://www.alexa.com/
http://www.compete.com/

These two sites allowed us to see the exact same patterns in traffic
affecting nearly all other museums.

These sites can also be useful when trying to determine Internet usage
trends. Is Facebook still hot? Type in their address and you can see the
results.

I was wondering whether anyone uses any particular web traffic
statistics to
compare the performance of their website to the websites of other
museums.
In effect is anyone benchmarking their website against others, or know
of
any studies or papers which address this issue?
