They do make a head cleaner too dude - MD-8HCL

I should know, I was incorrectly sold one by Townhall Sound Central (and
they refused to refund my money, I only had the option of exchange for
something else - bastards. Never buy from them!)

I feel a little lost here - as I'm not sure whether the above comment
relates to Lens or Head cleaners. Sony definitely *DO* make an MD LENS
cleaner.

I've got a copy of Sony Pulse Magazine - a consumer catalogue of Sony
Products. On the page with all the recording media including blank MDs and
tapes, it has a "Mini Disc Lens Cleaner", model number seems to be MD-64CL
or something (it's pretty small). There are NO Sony HEAD cleaners listed.

MD: disc quality was :Re: Lens Cleaners

2000-12-04 Thread bryan . phelan

Yes, the record head sits on the disc surface, lubed by a small drop of
silicon grease...
GB

Someone mentioned the silicon grease about a year back when I asked
about the different brands and what the quality differance.
It was either Rob/Ralph or Jim.

(not exact words but.)
They said that on the disc itself there is a thin layer of silicon
which aids recording. The cheaper MD blanks might not have
this or this layer of silicon gease might not be as good so even though
the disk may sound the same the life time of the recording/disc could be
shortened by using a cheaper disc.

I always hated the Hi-space disks, from even holding the disc up to the
light you can see "patchy bits" as if parts of the disc were
thicker than others. TDK my fav brand but they are still 15 quid for 5.
Hi Space less than a pound each for an 80min blank. fine for
every day use with recordings that are not important.

MD: 510 on repair

2000-12-04 Thread Jacques Bouliane

Hi Folks!

After 3,5 years of good service, (and after 1,5 years of having to deal
with the infamous loading-unloading bug), I finally sent my Sony 510 for
repairs. I found out, last friday by trying to edit a previous recording,
that it messed up the UTOC, rendering the disc unusable, and could not
record at all. Play was fine and dandy.

Since I purchased in 97 an extended 5 year-warranty, I thought that I might
give it a try.

I'll keep "the list" informed. Meanwhile, I'm using my portable MZ-R35 as a
spare.

I am also considering a Sony MXD-D5C as a MBA graduation (self-) gift, or a
HP 920e portable copier.

Comments ?

Regards to all.

I am looking for a new component MD unit to replace my dead Sony 320. Is
anyone aware of Yamaha units that are still available anywhere. A Yamaha rep
told me they no longer manufacture a unit for the US market. Thanks much for
all of your help.

My Sony 320 was a piece of junk from day one and am looking for a brand that
actually makes a quality MD unit (Are there any?).

I have heard nothing but good things about Hi-Space discs, from both
retailers and reviewers. Do you have any evidence to your claim that they
are inferior, and should not be used for "important" recordings?

For example, minidisco.com says this about Hi-Space discs:

Europe's top-of-the-line maker of digital recording media...
Minidisco labs thoroughly tested these discs, and we love them.
Some of the lowest error rates we've ever seen, and the disc flap
housing uses a heavier embedded spring for durability.

   * Total compliance with every type of MiniDisc drive on the market
ensured by perfect control of the pre-groove geometry of the disc
during the mastering process. * Outstanding durability thanks to a
protective lacquer developed by MPO. This lacquer offers excellent
resistance to abrasion, a low friction coefficient and guarantees
two million recordings without any measurable wear or increase in
friction. * Operation under extreme conditions of use thanks to the
composition, homogeneity and thickness of the magneto-optical
layer. Even when exposed to the extreme temperatures or used in
drives running on low-power batteries, Hi-SpaceTM MiniDiscs
   guarantee optimum sound quality.

I've been examining some of my Hi-Space discs compared to some of my Sony
and TDK discs, and I can't see any of the "patchy bits" you describe.

Are you saying that we shouldn't use Hi-Space discs for "important"
recordings because they are less expensive?

Are there easy ways to mark the beginning and end of tracks on some
minidisc unit without going through tons of menu junk? Something where you
could hear where you're stopping would be good, where I could listen to
what I'm editing, get to the gbeginning of where I want to delete, mark it
by pressing a button, listen to where I want to end deletion, mark it, and
divide that portion out to delete that track?

Editor 2 (comes with the PC2) doesn't support it. Anyone know if the PC3
software is backwards compatible to the PC2?

2000-12-04 Thread J. Coon

I still say it is best to not use these on a regular basis. Only use
them just before you have to take it in for repairs, to see if that
clears up the problem. But hey, it's you equipment and if you damage it
because of excessive cleaner use, who stands to gain from that? So have
at it!

Like I said before, the laser shouldn't touch anything, the head is only
used during recording and not at all during play back. The MD media
doesn't lose it's coating like a tape does, so the only reason to clean
it is if you got some lint in there from carrying it around.

Keith asked,

Not across the digital audio link. Some units have ports for a second cable
that can transfer that information, but generally you'll need to reenter the
titles.

Most Sharp portable recorders have a feature called Name Stamp, whereby if
two recordable discs have the same number of tracks, the unit will hold all
the titles of one disc in memory while you insert the other disc, and it will
copy them all to the second disc. Unlike a TOC cloning, it doesn't copy the
rest of the TOC information (such as sector addresses and SCMS and mode
bits), only the disc name and the track titles.

I am considering getting a recorder, being able to do most things with
single buttons is important in what I might choose. Can some recorders
allow you to cut and paste, where you cut something from one part of a
recording and paste it in somewhere else?

What unit do you have now, Brent? Several times people have made the same
complaint about their machines only because they didn't read their fluffy
manuals (or didn't read them carefully), were trying to figure their machines
out by the seats of their pants, and had missed the easy way and found only
the hard way.

Your recorder might have an easy way as well. Which model is it?

MD: Sony DHC MD5?

I'm having a bit of a problem when I move MDs between my Sony MZ-R37, and
the Sony DHC MD5 - for some strange reason, one treats MDs created by the
other as blank.

Any ideas as to why this would happen?

Cheers,
