RE: MD: NiMH batteries in a NiCd charger?

2000-12-29 Thread Tony Antoniou

There's only one reason why you need a different charger for NiMH ... peak
detection.

See, in an automatic fast charger, you need to know when the battery is
full. The charging process is still the same ... DC straight into the
battery. But the peak (otherwise known as Delta-V) characteristic is
different between the 2 chemistries. So what does this mean? Throw a NiMH
battery into an automatic NiCd fast charger and it won't know when to stop,
and there go your batteries.

So as a general rule, don't do it. The only exception to the rule is if
you're using a non-automatic slow (i.e. 14-16hr/overnight) charger.

Subject:MD: NiMH batteries in a NiCd charger?

Can I charge NiMH AA/AAA batteries in a NiCd charger? I thinking of
"upgrading" my NiCd's (which are getting old) to NiMH to power my MD
players and a Handspring Visor. If I need a different charger, what are
the recommendations for NiMH (and, preferably, NiCd) chargers capable
of charging AA and AAA batteries? Thanx!

MD: Plug-in power explained...

2000-12-29 Thread Timothy Stockman

Consumer MD recorders are designed to be used with electret capacitor microphones.
This type of mic uses a small foil
diaphram with an electret (permanently charged) backing. This, like all capacitor
microphones, has a very high output
impedance, so it cannot directly drive the connecting cable. Included in the
microphone capsule is a Field Effect
Transistor, and the high impedance gate of the FET is a perfect match for the
microphone element. A small voltage,
generally 1.5 to 10V must be supplied to operate the FET. The drain current of the
FET is propertional to the gate voltage,
and the FET is able to drive a much lower impedance, so the high-frequency roll-off
caused by the cable capacitance is
negligable for normal cable of up to 100 ft. or more.

Plug-in powered microphones have an unbalanced 2-wire output; stereo mics have a
3-wire output, 2 hot wires and a
ground. The recorder supplies a small voltage, generally 1.5 - 2 volts DC, between
each hot wire and ground, through a 2k
(approximately) resistor.

Phantom powered microphones have a balanced 3-wire output; stereo mics have a 5-wire
output with a common ground.
The mixer or recorder supplies a higher voltage, often 48 volts DC but some mics will
work with as low as 9 volts, between
each signal wire and ground, through matched 6.8k resistor pairs.

The differences between plug-in and phantom power are:

1) Plug-in is unbalanced (ground is used as the return of the audio circuit), phantom
is balanced (has individual hot, return
and ground).
2) Plug-in supplies the power voltage hot = +, return/ground = -. Phantom supplies
the power voltage hot and return = +,
ground = -.
3) Plug-in supplies low voltage, generally 1.5 - 2 volts, whereas phantom supplies a
higher voltage, often 48 volts.

Plug-in and phantom power are incompatible. Plug-in is unbalanced; phatom MUST be
balanced, since not only the hot but
the return must carry the power voltage.

Will followed up,

| hey, thanks for your help,

You're welcome.

|it seems that the cable i am recording with only has one of those black
| bands.

So it's a mono cable. Get a stereo cable to use instead.

| my next question is... how do i get the music from the left ear phone
| to play in both earphones.

You normally wouldn't want to, since it's only half of the music, but you
could do it with a bookcassette adaptor. It's a splitter that looks like
a headphone cable Y-adaptor, but it routes the left channel of the plug to
both channels of one jack and the right channel of the plug to both channels
of the other jack (instead of doing left to both lefts and right to both
rights like a headphone cable Y-adaptor).

RE: MD: Christmas Present Gloat: BO earphones

The model is A8 - I was lucky enough to get a pair of these from my wife
for Christmas. They sound fantastic connected to my Aiwa AM-F70 on my walk
to work each morning. :)

Someone recently was enquiring about high quality earbuds. Take a look at
Bang Olufsen's latest offering - they don't actually have a model name or
number, but as they seem to be the only model, they're quite easy to
identify. As you might expect from BO, the design is extraordinary. Made
from aluminium and hard rubber, they consist of an over the ear section,
like part of a pair of spectacles, connected to an adjustable metal rod
which sits in front of the ear. This holds the earbud itself, which in turn
is articulated in such a way that it can press into the ear for maximum bass
response. Hard to describe, but think Borg implants and you'll get the
general impression. More importantly, they sound awesome, and have easily
supplanted my old pair of Aiwa VX50's, which were the only earbuds which in
their time merited comparison with over the ear models. Visit
www.bang-olufsen.com and look under accessories for a closer look. The site
is a masterpiece of design, but very flash intensive, so you need a fast
connection. Having said that, I suppose to habitual BO purchasers, that's a
given. I don't know how much the little beauties cost, but as they were the
main present from my significant other - I hope it was a great deal!

John
