MD: TosLink interconnect question...

2001-04-11 Thread Stories

Hello MiniDisc enthusiasts,

This is a bit off topic but I hope someone can help. I have 2 standard
TosLink fiber optic cables (standard 1 meter length each) that I wish
to
connect together so that I can have a 2 meter cable. Does anyone know
if
such interconnects exist?

Don't know if anything that exists to do this,
but the DIY or temporary approach is easy, employ's a little electrical
tape and a biro.

And if so, where can I buy them? (a URL would be
greatly appreciated). Also. are there optical "Y" Adapters so that I
can
connect 2 S/PDIF sources to one mini-disc recorder?

I cant post to the MD list from this address - feel free to repost

why some plugs are polarized (one
prong is wider than the other)

So we're all kinda sleeping though EE2 or was that EE3... except for the
really nerdy types who are paying rapt attention. We're doing AC - and the
math gets really weird.
The guy who teaches the class is some big power engineer for PSEG (the big
central NJ power supplier) Turns out since few people like doing this stuff
- you can make alot of $$$ at it if you are good at it (aka you *like* it).

Near the end of class, some guy raises his hand in the back (Id like to say
it was me, but it wasnt) and asks...
We all now know that AC means that the voltage fluctuates between + and - an
approximate 115 volts (in a standard single phase North America standard AC
outlet).
Thanks to todays lecture we now are armed with the ability to calculate the
phase angle differnces between the three phase poles.
So why do AC powered itmes have these polarized plugs?
It makes no difference to the "motor" which way the plug goes it. If it goes
in the wrong way - the motor is just phase shifted - not "inverted" or
"reversed". Obviously inductive devices (aka heaters etc) could care less
about phase or polarity.

The response was intersting...

In turns out that some items are "case" grounded. Thus the shell has some
voltage at its surface. The voltage is not enuff to pierce the skin -
(calculated in a seperate lecture in Electromagnetic Field ), so you dont
get a shock.
But if you were to pick up two devices and the case grounding were to be out
of phase (aka the plugs reversed) then the potential differnce between the
two hands would be
(rapid scribbling from the guys up front - and a shout of 2 times 120v is
240v from the middle of the room)
For a bonus question - what is the estimated power range of the tools in
question in order to electrocute the home handyman in the above scenario?
*Define* all appropriate assumptions taken...

Socket to socket adapters are available - I have one. I can't see it in the
catalogue at the moment, but I can see 1 to 2 adaptors. I don't know from
your e-mail address where you are - I'm in the UK. I got mine from CPC
(www.cpc.co.uk). The 1-2 adaptor is 6.56 UKP. Shame the catalogue doesn't
say who makes them :-( Stock number is AV03256.

Good luck with your search.

Greg.

P.S. They do long cables too!

MD: sharp MD-X5 and MS-702

2001-04-11 Thread me

hi all,
ive got the MD-X5 minisystem, and the MS-702 player/recorder. the only
problem is whenever i play MDs that i made on the X5 on the 702, i get
horrible static, so loud that its unbearable, and not listen-able. i
would guess that its an ATRAC incompatibility, but that doesnt make
sense - the X5 is older than the 702 (at least, i think so) so it should
be backwards compatible, right? basically, what im asking is does anyone
have experience with MDs authored by the X5? can anyone recommend a
portable player *not a recorder* that will work with the aforementioned
MDs? and i have tried emailing sharp - they said take it to a repair
place, with is over 1.5 hours away...

thanks
eli

You could always ship it to the repair shop =) Call them, and they can give
instructions on how to ship for warranty repair - I dont sympathize, the
closest repair shop for me is a 3.5 hr drive away!

My guess is (possibly incorrect, but anyway) is that the atrac chip in the
x5 is an earlier version of the 702's, meaning its poorer in compression,
meaning poorer in storing music. Also, the X5's sound could've have been
counter balanced with other components, eg, speakers, noise removal, amp,
whereas the 702 won't compensate (although it is only a distinct
possibility, unlikely in any case)

If you are in Oz you can go to Jaycar electronics where they have a toslink
Adapter part no. PA-3596 which is female-female $6.66 (ominous price?).

No. There are no interoperability issues between various implementations
of ATRAC. Anything recorded on any recorder will play back on any player,
regardless of manufacturers.

Most likely it is an alignment problem in either of the two units. Hard to
tell which without at least one known good sample to work from. Or simply
dirt.

I agree with Rat on this. Get a MD recorded on another unit, or a
pre-recoprded one and see which one is messed up.

2001-04-11 Thread Dan Irwin

I've got a Sharp MD-X5 and an MS-722 player/recorder. I do not notice this
problem at all going in either direction. I guess the question I have to
ask here is what type of recording were you making on the
X5? Digital? Analog? What was your source? If it was external to the
X5, did you check the cable itself? I suppose the problem may be the ATRAC
on the 702, but as you said, this makes no sense. I know for a fact that
the X5 is older than the 722, I'm not sure about the 702. Sorry if this
didn't really help, but I've never had this problem with my X5 or
722. This includes recording from CD-MD, radio, external analog, and
external digital signal.

And good luck dealing with Sharp if that's what it comes down to :-(
