MD: noise (mechanical)

2001-06-01 Thread Christoph Hertel

Hello,

I'm new on the list, so sorry for mentioning an old flamewar-subject.

I'm thinking about buying a portable MD-recorder (my first MD-equipment)
and the Sharp MT-90H and the Sony MZ-R700 look pretty fine, so I need to
make a decision... One hint could be the noise (made by the motors and
such, not the one I'm hearing in the phones) the players produce.

Does anyone have an opinion about which player is quieter (while
playing, track searching..)

Thanks!

Christoph

Re: MD: High price of solid state memory (was: If MDs had come out before CDs)

2001-06-01 Thread Tk

But is Md really on fire in say, Japan, like it was about 3 years ago?

Well.. I mean it was a bit different over there. Most people I know in
Japan used MD because they frequently rent audio CDs. There are A LOT of
places to rent CDs over there! Before there weren't that many home
computers over there either, as space is very limiting. That's why most
people over there own laptops. Back then there weren't any laptops that
could burn CD... (anyone here remember burning CD using a CLI in the early
90's?)Plus the fact that MD small and keen make them very appealing I guess.

MD: DCC?

2001-06-01 Thread Danny-K

Hello-

I know this is the MD list, but I figured some of you probably had DCC
players back in the day.

In my ever-lasting quest for a recording medium that provides
optical/digital out (for transfer to PC/CDR) I have come across a DCC
deck. It's going for $50 on ebay right now, and has optical/coax in/out.

I also get the feeling that maybe DCC is not compressed sound? Only
problem is finding blanks. The guy is giving two blanks with the unit,
and I guess I could just recycle, but does anyone know of a place selling
blank DCC? Is it worth getting into? The price is right, but do you guys
think it's totally a dead medium at this point?

The picture of the MZ-R900DPC shown at etronics.com is incorrect.
First off, they show a Sony MZ-R700DPC. Secondly, the color
in the etronics.com is incorrect. If you want to see what the
MZ-R900DPC really looks like, go to planetminidisc.com or crutchfield.com.
The MZ-R900DPC's red color is brighter than the picture at etronics.com
indicates, but it's not at all obnoxious. I actually bought
an MZ-R900DPC from planetminidisc.com and the PCLink unit that
is supplied with it is the Xitel DG-1...it even says so right
on the back of the unit. AFAIK red is the only color that the
MZ-R900DPC (with PC-Link) is going to be available in. If you
want a silver MZ-R900 AND a PC-Link device, you're going to have
to buy them separately.

After I'd seen Richard's and Rat's replies and thanked them, another came in

Yes, I'd already seen it on (in retina-burn red) on their pages.

| The MZ-R900DPC's red color is brighter than the picture at etronics.com

Obnoxious is a stronger term than I'd use either, but it's still too much
for my tired old eyes.

Red is certainly the only color so far, and if what I heard about other
colors later this summer doesn't come to pass, I'll have a decision to make.
The PC connector is unimportant to me, as I have another way to go from PC
to MD for the very rare occasions I want to do so; the reason I don't buy an
imported MZ-R900 in a milder color right now is the lack of local warranty
service.

So if no other color of MZ-R900 or MZ-R900DPC is to be sold in the US, I'll
have to select among (a) tolerating the color, (b) settling for a non-local
warranty, (c) buying an MDLP portable with fewer features, or (d) saving the
money and not buying an MDLP portable at all. One possible realization of
(c) is to get an MZ-E900 [if you classify recording as a feature] because the
MDS-JB940 that I already own can record MDLP and I have no portable MDLP
recording needs.

 | AFAIK red is the only color that the MZ-R900DPC (with PC-Link) is going to
 | be available in.

I think that color choice and combinations may be cultural thing. In the mid
80's one of the leading Japanese auto manufactures was offering their red cars
with only BROWN upholstery and interior trim.

Sports car red and brown are not generally an acceptable combination to Americans
(myself included). The following year they changed the interior to gray.

I'm not sure that there is any direct tie in to consumer electronics, but it is
interesting that you can't order a Japanese car with the options that you want.
These cars are assembled in Japan and shipped with various combinations of
accessories.

The dealer hunts his computer for a car with with closest options that you
want. Often you are stuck purchasing expensive options that you do not want in
order to get the ones you do.

Americans usually have a car built for them. You can usually choose the color
combinations and most of the options.

I wonder if a person purchasing a car in Japan has the same limitations as
Americans do when it comes to Japanese autos?

Until Apple commuter decided to offer color choices in their iMacs, when it came
to electronics you were pretty much stuck with the color that they came in. I
imagine having to stock computers in 6 different colors is a retailer's
nightmare!

Analog is recorded with sine waves, whereas digital is recorded with
square waves, which take up more room.
Also, tapes sound better if the tape is moved past the head faster
(lower density).
So there is less available time that the tape has per foot. So the data
is compressed to make it fit.

Where did you get that bit of misinformation?

| Also, tapes sound better if the tape is moved past the head faster

Not for digital media. The capacity of digital media is a function of the
size of the read/write heads. For example, DDS-2 is a 120m DAT tape and
stores 4GB of data, while DDS-3 is a 125m tape and stores 12GB of data, a
three-fold increase.

MD: Radio Station Just Got MD Equipment

2001-06-01 Thread James Jarvie

Here's a happy thing: this afternoon when I showed up
at the radio station where I work part-time (WWFM -
classical radio network), the chief engineer pointed
out to me the newest piece of equipment - a Sony
MDS-E12 MINIDISC deck. There's one in the on-air
studio and there will soon be one in the production
studio.

I'm not sure what he has planned for them; but I
suggested, and he seemed to agree, that we could use
them instead of DAT (DAT tapes have been giving us
some problems) for locally-produced shows, and for
recording from the satellite any programs to be
rebroadcast at a later date.

I'm excited because this unit has a keyboard input so
I can bring in my keyboard and title my own discs.

Nice to see someone else who recognizes that MD is a
terrific format.

Let me explain a couple of things. Time is short. That's the
first thing. For the weasel, Time is a weasel. For the hero,
Time is heroic. For the whore, Time is just another trick.
If you're gentle, your Time is gentle. If you're in a hurry,
Time flies. Time is a servant, if you are its master. Time
is your god, if you are its dog. We are the creators of Time,
the victims of Time, and the killers of Time. Time is timeless.
That's the second thing. You are the clock, Cassiel.

Re DCC decks handling analog tapes
===BEGIN QUOTE

END QUOTE

If this is so regarding DCC decks digitizing the signals that come out of
analogue cassettes, then this could be good for cassette restoration
exercises.

If you use a soundcard or USB-SPDIF block that can capture SPDIF signals,
you could record a cassette to hard disk as a WAV file using the DCC's
on-board A/D process. By containing the analogue process in the DCC deck
during this exercise and the fact that DCC decks may digitize post-Dolby
or apply the Dolby playback curve using a bit of DSP, there is very little
risk of computer interference getting into the playback chain.

Then you use a good sound-editor package like SoundForge to treat the
sound of the cassette recording that you captured. Here you could do effects
like applying frequency filters to the sound to cut out tape hiss or
augmenting the sound level to bring-up low-level recordings.

Then you export the finished recording to CDR as a Red-Book volume or to
MD.

With regards,

Simon Mackay
