Re: MD: chopping off headphone jack

They are headphone-ONLY.

Several people have posted that the same jack acts
as a line-out under certain circumstances.

But David, NOT on the new Sony players. There are two
kinds of "combo" jacks: the kind used on many Sharp
models that automatically sense the impedance of the
attached device/cable, and change to line/headphone
appropriately; and the kind used on many Sony recorder
units that can be manually switched between
line/headphone by the user.

The jack on the new Sony players is NEITHER (caps for
clarity, not volume ;)). It is headphone-only, and
cannot act as a line out. This is according to Sony.

Hope this clarifies.

David (and Dave Hooper):

Both of you commented on a "headphone/line" jack.

Unfortunately, the new Sony playback-only units don't
have an auto-switch headphone/line jack. They are
headphone-ONLY.

Re: MD: earbuds

2001-02-20 Thread D. Frakes

I frequent the MiniDISCussion headphone boards, as
well as the HeadWize boards and Headroom's own boards.
There is rarely "agreement" on headphones, but there
is nearly unanimous agreement on the following
hierarchy of earbuds:

1) Etymotics ER4S or ER4P (S for use with a headphone
amp, P for use directly from a portable). Not only the
best earbud available, but one of the best headphones
of any design. $269

2) Sony MDR-E888. Not nearly as good as the Etymotics,
but clearly better than anything else. $69

3) A close race: Sony EX70 (not sure, but I think
around $40-$50) and Sennheiser MX500 ($20). The EX70
has much better isolation (more of a "plug" type) and
therefore better bass, but the Sennheiser supposedly
has better overall sound (but no isolation).

I'm a big headphone enthusiast -- I own the Etymotics
ER4S, Sennheiser 580s, Grado SR-60, and Koss KSC/35,
and have auditioned tons of others. I actually
purchased the Koss "Plug" and was VERY, VERY, VERY
disappointed. The sound was muddy, with boomy, poor
bass. I even tried the "fix" for them from Headwize
that supposedly dramatically increases sound quality.
They were indeed better, but still nothing to write
home about. The reviews of the Plug have pretty much
agreed with my evaluation. If you only want to spend
$20, get the Sennheisers.

Not to be too contrarian, but you *definintely* can
beat the sound quality. The Sony 888's don't even come
close to the Koss KSC/35's, and they are much cheaper.

Re: MD: Sony MZ-R50

2000-08-14 Thread D. Frakes

I have to agree that as far as Sony's go, the MZ-R50
is my favorite -- it's a very durable and easy-to-use
design. My only complaints:

1) End Search. 'nuff said.
2) The record and eject buttons are exactly the same
size, move in the same direction, and are located
right next to each other. If you're trying to operate
the unit "by touch," it's far too easy to accidentally
hit record when you're trying to eject.
3) I wish it were a bit smaller ;-) However, the extra
size clearly makes it more durable.
4) Sony stuff is still too expensive. An MZR-50 is
$250 even now, while I got my 722 for $140.

That said, if I were recommending a portable recorder,
I would probably recommend the MZ-R50 or the 722. Not
just because that's what I have, but because I really
put a lot of time into comparing different units when
I bought mine, and I think they're both great units.

[Background: I have an MZ-R50 and a Sharp 722. My
girlfriend has a 702, and I have good friends with the
the MZ-R50 and the 702. In two years, none of us has
had a single problem with any of them. The Sony has a
well-deserved reputation for being a tank, and the
Sharp units have, IMHO, an undeserved reputation for
being unreliable -- the early 702's were junk, but the
702-MK fixed that.]

Re: MD: Sharp MS-722

2000-08-10 Thread D. Frakes

For the most part I love my 722, though it is
somewhat fragile, physically. Esp the eject
lever and mechanism. I've had it since Dec
and never see a UOTC error.

The irony here is that most people consider the Sharp
700-series to be among the sturdiest, least fragile
designs out there, *especially* the eject lever and
mechanism ;-)

MD: Sharp 722 for under $140 til 10pm!

2000-06-15 Thread D. Frakes

[Sorry if this went through twice, but I didn't
receive the first one...]

As of right now, the Sharp 722 is selling for $172.15
with free shipping at Mercata. If you're a first time
customer, you get 20% off, making it only $137.72. The
more people who buy it, the lower the price will go,
and supposedly everyone who buys gets the final
"close" price. The sale ends at 10pm PST tonight.

This is probably the best deal ever on a portable
recorder.
