Re: MD: Boomboxes from outside the US?
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Since we're on the boombox topic, are there any MD boombox/portable stereos a vailable where MD is more popular, like Europe or Japan? The only problem with this approach is that AM and FM radio bands differ from country to country. For example, in Japan, the FM band runs from 76-90MHz, eliminating 75 percent of the U.S. FM spectrum. This makes it a non-starter for me, because one of the reasons I would want a (battery-powered) boombox would be to take it on vacations to the beach, where I like to listen to (and record) local radio. There are _very_ few, if any, DC-powered foreign boomboxes with "wide spectrum" radio coverage (usually called "tourist models"). G. I'm not aware of any battery-powered boomboxes for sale in the U.S., which is just mind-boggling. Why don't the manufacturers meet this need? === Dale Greer Bored? MD: Lawyers, Discs and Money
Hi all, Some of you may know that I have a web site which shows folks how to dub MP3s from their Macintosh computers to MiniDisc. I've been getting a lot of e-mails from people who don't understand why they can't simply copy the MP3s to MD faster than real time, so I've put together a rather lengthy explanation. This "FAQ," which I've called "Lawyers, Discs and Money," goes into the historical, political and legal reasons why MD works the way it does. Anyway, I would appreciate it if you could look this over and offer comments, corrections or clarifications. Thanks much! Hi all, The Yamaha RP-U100 apparently is now Mac-compatible. The company's web page http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/newprods/PChometheater/pchtinfo.htm has been changed to add this statement: The Yamaha @ PET RP-U100 is USB compatible with Windows 98 installed PCs and Apple Macintosh computers with System 9.0.2. MD: Help with synch recording
Hi all, This was sent to me by a Sharp portable MD user who is sending an optical digital output from his computer sound card to his MD recorder. He asked: My portable MD recorder gets a digital signal from the sound card all the time, making it impossible to synch record. Is this normal? How do I synch record? Any help would be appreciated. MD: Digital recording via Mac
I recently saw on the MDCP a Macintosh tutorial for analog recording to MiniDisc, which gave me the idea to put together a tutorial for digital recording to the Mac. I've been an MD'er for nearly seven years, but I'm new to the Mac-MD scene (I just got all the hardware two days ago!), so I hope I haven't made any major gaffs with the instructions. They are not as expensive as MD walkmans, but they are in the neighboorhood. And for cars... Well head-units for metal-tapes exists but again, they are expensive. And a good metal tape costs a lot more than a MD-blank. Add to that all the convinience of MDs (editing, random-access, size) and you'll see why tape is on its way out Don't forget head azimuth mistracking/misalignment, which can cause a tape made on one deck to have serious high-frequency loss when played on another. It also really irked me that a so-called audio professional would spell MiniDisc as "mini-disc." This is a trademarked name, after all, and an audio sales specialist should know better. Re: MD: MD Boombox?
Hi Rick, You may be right. I assumed that since Sony's press release called the ZS-M35 a "portable" unit, it would be battery powered. If it's not, the marketing geniuses at Sony need to have their collective noggins examined for calling an AC-powered stereo a portable unit. Or maybe it comes with a verry long power cord. ;-) I ask again, just to hear the sound of my own whinig: Why hasn't Sony made a real U.S.-spec battery-powered boombox? Am I the only person in the world who enjoys listening to ambient music at the beach, in a hotel room, by the pool, etc? This really is unforgivable. MD was introduced eight years ago -- surely the format is mature enough for a product I would have expected by the third generation. It really is a no-brainer. Take care, Dale On 2/21/00 1:12 PM, Eric Woudenberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: AFAIK the ZS-M35 is AC only. Please correct me if you learn otherwise. Yours, Dicky Dicky, Sony finally plans on releasing a proper boombox in the U.S. this spring (and by "Boombox," I mean a battery-powered unit with a handle; an AC-powered shelf system is _not-not-not_ a boombox in my book!). I wonder why it's taken so long for Sony to meet this need? To me this has always been a frustrating hole in the product offerings. From a recent Sony-U.S. press release: High-Speed Dubbing Hits the Road with VCR-Like Programming Capabilities Sony¹s first portable MD boombox (model ZS-M35) cuts CD-to-MD dubbing time in half for consumers who enjoy making their own mixes. With high-tech styling that fits into an office or dorm room, the compact, black and silver boombox features one-touch CD-to-MD recording, CD text transfer and synchro recording. The ZS-M35 includes an AM/FM digital tuner with 20 station presets, Remote Commander® remote control and a Mega Bass® sound system. It also has a built-in clock with a sleep timer, which functions like an alarm clock, and timer recording capability, which allows MD recording to start and stop at predetermined times. The ZS-M35 will be available in April 2000 for approximately $350. - Also, I am a Mac user myself, so please let me know what you find out re: MD dubbing to CD via your Mac desktop.
