MD: thanks for help

2000-09-17 Thread HK Hill

Re the non-functioning Aiwa AM-F5:

I tried running it on the charger the day it died--no response--no LED, no
battery indicator, nothing. Usually run it from the charger when I use it at
home or work, plugged into good old AC.
Cigarette lighter and DC adapter still work--tried my portable CD player and
it worked just fine.
Plugged in the dry cell pack--nothing.

Of course this 'disaster' happened the 2nd day of my 10 day trip :(. Every
day I tried putting it on the AC charger in hotel rooms with no results :(.
Got home, same thing, which is when, of course, I turned to the list. I
hadn't attempted anything else with the unit for a few days. After reading
your suggestions, I decided to try it on the charger again. Lo and behold,
RESULTS!! The little battery indicator is on, the NO DISK and COVER OPEN
LEDs were there. I have no clue. Could using the cigarette adapter (not one,
I must add, one designed for use with the Aiwa---I've used it before in the
car, but never for so long a time) have somehow overcharged the battery and
it took this time to discharge down? Or is this supposition a violation of
laws of physics and batteries? ;} I choose to believe that the collective
psychic energies of the list empowered my poor old unit ;-}. Anyway, it's
charging up now, and I will check it out when fully charged. And I promise
not to use it on the cigarette adapter again.

I also apologize for the bad temper of my request (ok, demand) for help.
Like most of us, I get testy when ignored. Thanks again for the advice.

MD: still need help

2000-09-14 Thread HK Hill

A few days ago, I posted a request for help, repeated below. I must say, I
am very surprised, and disappointed, that I have received no response. I
don't know very much about the requirements, restrictions and foibles of
these 'new' gadgets. Yes, my Aiwa AM-F5 is a couple of years old, but I
though, obviously in vain, that at least one of the list subscribers might
have an opinion to offer. Of course, if you'd rather just continue arguing
about compression levels, or how many seconds can fit on a MD, or
. better stop now before sarcasm mode goes into overdrive.
Anyway, any opinion would be appreciated. I've never dealt with equipment
with rechargeable batteries before, and really don't know what to do.

I posted; I took my Aiwa AM-F5 on a road trip, using a 4.5V
cigarette lighter
adapter(pretty sure it's 4.5). On day 3, the unit stopped working--tried
recharging battery, but it wouldn't power up at all. I've had the unit for a
couple of years and use it a lot. Do you all think I killed the battery,
maybe it has reached the end of it's life, or have I killed the unit? I'd
like to have some input from more knowledgeable folk before I spend $50 for
another li-ion battery.

And yes, I checked, and the DC adapter states 4.5v. So, again, do I need a
new battery, or a new recorder? I find it hard to believe that not one of
the list members have had something similar happen?

MD: what to buy

2000-04-27 Thread HK Hill

OK, I am also new to the list. I've had an Aiwa FM 5 for a couple of years,
and am more than ready to move up . But, there are so many models to
choose from! After reading comments here and on t-station, I think I'm going
to go with a Sony. My question to you all is---is the MZR 90/91 really so
much better than the MZR 70? Why? I know the battery life of the 90/91 model
is much greater than the 55 or the 70. I've seen the 55 for $250, the 70 for
$209 and the 90/91 for $320. So, is the 90 that much better than the 55 or
the 70? And could someone explain Sony's numbering system and pricing to
me? Shouldn't these models come with release years?

Anyway, thanks for the advice. A new soundcard is also in the works, so I'd
be interested in opinions of the Soundblaster Live MP3 vs the Xitel (?)
Storm whatever it is with the built-in TOSlink output jack. What kind of
optical output does the Soundblaster have? I've looked at Creative Labs'
website, but am still not sure what, exactly, it has. Plus, it looks much
harder to install than the Storm whatever.
