MD: The whole copyright debacle regarding music

2000-09-20 Thread Simon Mackay

Hi everyone!

With all the fuss regarding Napster and MP3; why are the record companies so
worried about copyright? In a sense, it is all about control of where the
music is heard!

MP3, Napster, Internet radio and related Internet-based technologies allow a
piece of music to be distributed anywhere in the world for the cost of an
Internet connection. This means that a recording which is not officially
released in a particular country can be heard in other countries; which is
against record publishers wishes. These Internet-based technologies also
work hand-in-glove with Internet-based music stores like CDNow where anyone
can buy a copy of a CD that is not available in their own country.

A similar debacle had occurred in Australia when in 1998, our government
relaxed restrictions over parallel-importing of books and music. Since 1989,
the "grey-import" practice came under the spotlight because music retailers,
especially speciality outlets like Central Station Records who specialise in
dance music, imported music, especially hard-to-find recordings, without
going through the official distributors.

The record companies were recruiting Metallica and Dr. Ore who are under
contract to give "sob stories" against Napster mainly because Napster and
its underlying technologies are stripping the record companies of their
control over the artists' music.

Now we have quite a lot of direct imports available from the "specialists"
as well as JB HiFi who sells music at prices that are cheaper than the
"official" price. The only stores who stick to what the record companies
offer are the mainstream outlets like Delta / Sanity; In2Music; Blockbuster
Music and HMV (which I suspect is owned by EMI because they own the HMV (His
Master's Voice) name and "dog listening to gramophone" logo in the UK and
Australia).

Some of the direct imports include material that is not released officially
in Australia and material that has been released previously but was deleted
by the official distributors.

With regards,

Simon Mackay

No, it is about how much money the record companies get.

To wit, take a good long look at what Courtney Love is up to, demanding her
slice of the Universal vs. MP3 pie. She'll get nothing from Universal,
which really shows that the record companies are *NOT* doing it to protect
their artists, but their profits.

The analogy is to think of the record companies as pimps. They are!! They get
the big piece of the pie and don't really give a sh!t about the artists. When a
prostitute gets AIDS, they are through. When an artist gets "cold" it's the same
thing. " There are a million more where they came from". Their pimp doesn't give
a sh!t about them any more. Some day Metalashit is going to really get it up
their @ss from some record company and then they are going to get a taste of their
own crap.

Don't get me wrong, with the possible exception of Metalashit, I don't think that
artists are prostitutes by any means. But that also means that you are thinking
of a prostitute as someone forced to debase themselves to make money.

There are prostitutes that like what they are doing. These are usually the high
end ones. Take Heidy Flice (SP?). Do you think anyone forced her to do what she
did?? Some women (and men) get off on having sex with powerful, rich people and
getting paid for it to boot.

I'm a firm believe in what goes around comes around. You screw someone and some
day some force, call it God, Jesus, the Cosmic Avenger or what ever you want is
going to give it right back to you.

It doesn't always happen. but it happens a lot. Some times good people get
screwed and the people who did it never pay for it in this life. My wife is one
of those who believes there is something after this and that's were they get it.
Unfortunately, I don't have her faith. I wish I did.

If you knew for sure that everyone has to answer for the things they did to hurt
others in the next "plane", you wouldn't have to think about getting mad or
getting even.

Damn, I promised myself I would stay on topic and not continue these threads, but
I'm doing it again. Sorry.
