I couldn't find them in Serramonte Target either. I will check the Saratoga
Target this weekend.

A few weeks ago someone mentioned that they saw convertible
TosLink/Miniplug digital cables at Target. I offered to pick a few up the
next time I went to Target and a couple people responded that they would
 like one.

The bad news is that I went to the "super" Target in San Francisco today
and the cables were nowhere to be seen. Sorry to disappoint.

That's actually the one I was at -- but I figured since this is an
international list no one would know what I was talking about if I said
"Serramonte" ;-)

Hi Dan. I got a set at Sears for $13.99. I had to do some looking. I found
a whole bunch of audio cables that were Recoton, but no dice. I was about to
give up when I saw an other display (the Sears where I live is such a mess
that if it was broken into no one could even tell).

Then there they were. So I suggest that anyone interested check out Sears.
I can't believe the disorder of most of the stores in my area. What do they
think, if the store looks like sh!t then it must have low prices?

I visited a Target 2 weeks ago. It's about an hour from me. I couldn't
believe how clean it was. Wide isles. Everything in it's place. The prices
varied. Some were very good; others equal to Wal*Mart and some things were
high.

They had I-Jam portable MP3 players, but no I-Jam portable CD players. I
thought that was odd. Except or the internet I have never seen I-Jam for
"real".

Can these adapters be used to connect the non-optical digital out from
sound-cards like sound blaster live to the digital in on a portable?

Best Buy has carried a Recoton model -- actually, several, as I think

available in various lengths -- for some time. It's a TOSlink-to-TOSlink
cable with two TOSlink-to-miniplug adaptors, so that it can be used for any
optical connection.

You must convert the Coax digital signal to optical first.

Yaniv Eyny asked,

No. All they are is dark plastic pieces with the hole at one end shaped like
a TOSlink jack and the other end shaped like an optical miniplug so that, if
you put a TOSlink cable into the TOSlink end of the adaptor and the miniplug
end into an optical minijack, it will make light-tight connections on both
ends.

All it adapts is the shape of the optical connector. If your soundcard's
output is coaxial digital, then Nathan summed it up: you'd need something
else to convert the coaxial signal to an optical one.

I bought some Recoton TOSlink cables at Best Buy a few months ago. They are
very flexable and work great. The only thing that might be a problem is
that the TOSlink connectors are rather large; they just barely fit the
side-by-side jacks on the DIO2448...

I found at Target (big mall retailer) "Recoton" brand "dvd" "Digital Optical 6
ft. Stereo Audio Cable" for a mere $15 (!!) or so. On the back of the card it
says "DVD901". It did take me half an hour of looking at every single thing in
their video/audio section.

But not only are these cables considerably cheaper than the $40 offerings
elsewhere, they are "universal" in that they come with "miniplug" adapters for
both ends. That is, out of the bubble-pack they have the square post style
optical connectors which I gather you can plug into some CD players; however
there are supplied two little plastic gadgets which you can snap over the
square posts to convert them into the Sony-style 3.5 mm stereo/optical
miniplug connectors.

One of these has worked here at least twice for digital copying minidisk to
minidisk from a Sony MZ-1 to a Sharp MD-MT15 and I look forward to using it to
connect to my VS840ex, which has a square post style output.

Much thanx for minidisc.org; the info has been priceless.

You're welcome!

This is the first time that I have ever heard of standard Toslink to Toslink
cables with mini plug adapters. This is a great and brilliant idea as long as it
 works.

This would totally eliminate the need for 3 different cables for different
situations. Currently if you own a portable CD player with a dig. optical out, it
will be a mini plug. So will a portable MD recorder.

So for that you need a mini to mini cable.

Then if you own a stereo system (almost all of Aiwa's in expensive mini systems-not
mini disc-come with a digital out) or DVD player with an optical dig out it will be
TOSlink. If you have a deck it will also be TOSlink. If you have a deck you need
a TOSlink to TOSlink cable.

Finally if you have a DVD player or something like the Aiwa and a portable recorder
you will need a mono on one end and a TOSlink on the other.

So you have to buy 3 different cables. Unless you are very careful about were you
keep things, chances are you will never be able to find the right cable when you
need it.

Too bad there are on Targets near me. That's a goo deal. If CC carries them, they
will probably cost $40. I don't CC would even want to carry them because it might
interfere with the sale of the $100 monster cables.

Regards,
Larry

Next time I go to Target, I'll check up on these. Maybe I'll pick up a
few and if people want them I can send them at the purchase price. I know
how frustrating it is to look everywhere for a cable and never find one
for less than $40.
