MD: sec: unclassified: OE, MDLP (was selector box question)

I've got a JB940 at home and I have yet to use the LP functionality.  

I've always read that MP3 doesn't sound as good as the original, I'm no
audiophile but I like to know the music I listen to is the best reproduction
I can get on my system, so I'm not into MP3 for that reason.  After years of
riding sport motorcycles my ears probably couldn't tell if the timbre of the
third cymbals was not shimmering like it shouldso I'm a sucker for
marketing
  I am into free music but that's a different issue  ;-)
So I read that LP2 is better than MP3 so that's good but it isn't as good as
the original.  
Are we the first generation of people who lower their standards of
listening?  If you read the media, MP3s will take over the world and LP2
follows on from this.  So do we have a conspiracy theory brewing here?  Will
uncompressed audio become the expensive audiophile source and compressed be
for the rest of us?  I dunno, food for thought maybe? Maybe I'm being a
wanker who should be working instead.

What Gaz said, plus be sure to uncheck the silly "always reply to messages
in the format in which they were sent" box: 99.9+% of HTML messages
should have been sent in plain text, and the very few that belong in HTML
should be answered in plain text.

LP2 sounds surprisingly good; listen for yourself on a floor demo model, or
on another person's machine, and reach your own conclusion.  LP4 is not so
great for music but more than adequate for spoken-word recordings.

MP3 can sound good if you use a good encoder and encode at a high bitrate.
i personally never encode at less than 192, and usually try to encode at
256. and i use a program written by this german dude that's dead good. i'd
rather not even download a 128 bitrate MP3 because it sounds all metallic.

LP is a good function sometimes. I don't record any of my music on the LP
setting mainly because i don't have a portable MDLP player, but even if i
did, i wouldn't because i'm just not that cheap. but i do use MDLP to
record movie sound tracks just because i don't have to put in another disc
half-way through. it sounds alright.

it's not the format that matters every time. early CDs sounded crap even
though the CD is like the ultimate or something. they just didn't master
things right back then. If you have a good source to work with, your MD
recording will sound good. Of course I wish MD didn't compress, but that's
something I'm willing to live with. And let's not forget that there's a
lot more to music that the playback format. like speakers, and amps and
the cables you use to hook things up. all of those things matter.
