Yea, forgot about the AC. The compressor is the same and in the same place as the 84, so I assume the lines will just plug right into the back of the 116 engined compressor. Did know the trannies were different as well. Marshall Booth wrote: Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: OK, so I got this 84 300SD I picked up for $100 to part out. There could be a few problems, but they are BOTH OM617.95 engines - the 116 engine is a 617.950 while the 300SD had a 617.951 engine. The transmissions ARE different so all the the vacuum and accelerator linkage from the newer car would have to be used with the newer transmission as both vacuum AND cables are needed on the later 722.3 series transmission vs the 116 series 722.1 series transmission. I THINK that whatever vacuum pump is there can remain there. I don't know if a piston pump can replace a diaphragm pump. There were a couple (two if I remember correctly) electric cars "on the island" when I was stationed on Governors Island in NYC in the early 1980s. And they were very cost efficient for the owners, since all utilities were included as part of base housing. Hey, if I could get free electricity I might be in the market for one myself. This is deceptive because they aren't accounting for the energy received from the electrical outlet. I can get 250 mpg from my 240D/3.0 when I fill it up at the pump, too -- so long as someone else is adding to my tank when I'm not looking. (There was an interesting story along these lines when I worked at Hewlett Packard in Colorado Springs about someone who had bought a new car and was thrilled about the mileage he was getting -- until the fellows who were adding fuel to his tank every day started siphoning instead of adding.) Remove the petrol engine entirely and the MPG goes to infinity. That does not mean you've invented perpetual motion however. They can't just leave the electricity out of the calculation as if it's free.

It is fairly simple to replace, just un screw the through bolt (about 22mm) and carefully lift everything off. If you get your replacement from a self service wrecker first, you will see the plunger and spring assy inside and know what to look for when you take yours off. Make sure the plunger moves freely inside the coil as a stuck plunger is what can burn up the coil. Regards, Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 261 K miles 98 ML 320, 137 K miles

It is working, but the output is pathetic... If the temp becomes too cold with the blower control in the automatic mode, it's PROBABLY because the temp controller is working improperly - NOT because the blower control is not working properly. This MIGHT be because the tube from the blower to the in cabin temp sensor is not drawing sufficient air across the sensor. The tube OFTEN rots or becomes disconnected and this OR much less frequently if the sensor degenerates, can result in erratic or unexpected temperature/blower motor operation. I'm sure it IS possible that the low speed setting to the blower to be wimpy, but that shouldn't result in temp output with the blower control in the automatic mode being too cold. [MBZ] AKP-Wagen experimentation begins...
yesterday I finally got around to draining my fuel tank. Not nearly as rusty as I thought. filtered the fuel through thick denim (will filter to 5 microns), then filtered a mix of used veggie oil, used crankcase oil, used oil bath air cleaner oil and then tossed in a gallon of canola oil and a quart of 10W-40 I didn't want. Then topped it off with GE 8932Q additive. All in all the mix is 1 part goop to 6 parts diesel#2. So far so good. Engine runs quieter and there are no billowing clouds of smoke, which I expected from the addition of so much motor oil. I guess INJECTING/ATOMIZING it rather than partially burning oil that gets passed rings makes a big difference. Will slowly increase my proportion of goop to diesel over time. It is quite amazing what will make a diesel go! I have a source for UNUSED motor oil/hy-tran/VO for 25 cents a gallon here in town. More on that later. I'm gonna try to check that out today. Re: [MBZ] AC Dead
I don't know what year the fuse fix was added, or if it ever was before the W123 ended production. My 1984 300D still used the 25A stock fuse and it was always melting/blowing and causing problems. I added an external GM-style 30A fuse located in that little relay box on the driver's fender, which solved the problem permanently. This was cheaper than using new OE components (I had the GM stuff floating around in my Pot O' Gold), although if you can find them used that would be a more 'correct' solution. Even the early 124's had this problem, it was corrected in the middle of the 1987 production run... all 124's after 1987 have an external 30A flat fuse. :-) -Dave M. [MBZ] Plug-in hybrids get 250 mpg
Experimental Hybrid Cars Get Up to 250 Mpg By TIM MOLLOY | Associated Press August 15, 2005 CORTE MADERA, Calif. (AP) - Politicians and automakers say a car that can both reduce greenhouse gases and free America from its reliance on foreign oil is years or even decades away. Ron Gremban says such a car is parked in his garage. It looks like a typical Toyota Prius hybrid, but in the trunk sits an 80-miles-per-gallon secret - a stack of 18 brick-sized batteries that boosts the car's high mileage with an extra electrical charge so it can burn even less fuel. Gremban, an electrical engineer and committed environmentalist, spent several months and $3,000 tinkering with his car. Like all hybrids, his Prius increases fuel efficiency by harnessing small amounts of electricity generated during braking and coasting. The extra batteries let him store extra power by plugging the car into a wall outlet at his home in this San Francisco suburb - all for about a quarter. He's part of a small but growing movement. "Plug-in" hybrids aren't yet cost-efficient, but some of the dozen known experimental models have gotten up to 250 mpg. They have support not only from environmentalists but also from conservative foreign policy hawks who insist Americans fuel terrorism through their gas guzzling. And while the technology has existed for three decades, automakers are beginning to take notice, too. So far, DaimlerChrysler AG (DCX) is the only company that has committed to building its own plug-in hybrids, quietly pledging to make up to 40 vans for U.S. companies. But Toyota Motor Corp. (TM) officials who initially frowned on people altering their cars now say they may be able to learn from them. "They're like the hot rodders of yesterday who did everything to soup up their cars. It was all about horsepower and bling-bling, lots of chrome and accessories," said Cindy Knight, a Toyota spokeswoman. "Maybe the hot rodders of tomorrow are the people who want to get in there and see what they can do about increasing fuel economy." The extra batteries let Gremban drive for 20 miles with a 50-50 mix of gas and electricity. Even after the car runs out of power from the batteries and switches to the standard hybrid mode, it gets the typical Prius fuel efficiency of around 45 mpg. As long as Gremban doesn't drive too far in a day, he says, he gets 80 mpg. "The value of plug-in hybrids is they can dramatically reduce gasoline usage for the first few miles every day," Gremban said. "The average for people's usage of a car is somewhere around 30 to 40 miles per day. During that kind of driving, the plug-in hybrid can make a dramatic difference." Backers of plug-in hybrids acknowledge that the electricity to boost their cars generally comes from fossil fuels that create greenhouse gases, but they say that process still produces far less pollution than oil. They also note that electricity could be generated cleanly from solar power. Gremban rigged his car to promote the nonprofit CalCars Initiative, a San Francisco Bay area-based volunteer effort that argues automakers could mass produce plug-in hybrids at a reasonable price. But Toyota and other car companies say they are worried about the cost, convenience and safety of plug-in hybrids - and note that consumers haven't embraced all-electric cars because of the inconvenience of recharging them like giant cell phones. Automakers have spent millions of dollars telling motorists that hybrids don't need to be plugged in, and don't want to confuse the message. Nonetheless, plug-in hybrids are starting to get the backing of prominent hawks like former CIA director James Woolsey and Frank Gaffney, President Reagan's undersecretary of defense. They have joined Set America Free, a group that wants the government to spend $12 billion over four years on plug-in hybrids, alternative fuels and other measures to reduce foreign oil dependence. Gaffney, who heads the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Security Policy, said Americans would embrace plug-ins if they understood arguments from him and others who say gasoline contributes to oil-rich Middle Eastern governments that support terrorism. "The more we are consuming oil that either comes from places that are bent on our destruction or helping those who are ... the more we are enabling those who are trying to kill us," Gaffney said. DaimlerChrysler spokesman Nick Cappa said plug-in hybrids are ideal for companies with fleets of vehicles that can be recharged at a central location at night. He declined to name the companies buying the vehicles and said he did not know the vehicles' mileage or cost, or when they would be available. Others are modifying hybrids, too. Monrovia-based Energy CS has converted two Priuses to get up to 230 mpg by using powerful lithium ion batteries. It is forming a new company, EDrive Systems, that will convert hybrids to plug-ins for about $12,000 starting next year, company vice president Greg Hanssen said

Re: [MBZ] OT: Replacing 1999 Chevy Malibu V6 alternator
I'm just catching up on the weekend digests so undoubtably somebodys already covered this but... Serpentine belts are really easy (on American cars anyway, I've never had one on anything else) once you know the trick. Locate the belt tensioner, get a wrench (not socket) that fits on the bolt in the center of the tensioner pully, a longer wrench is better, especially if the tensioner sits low on the engine on my '96 Dodge Dakota I use 2 wrenches but its easy to slip and snap yourself, be careful. Anyway, put the wrench on the tensioner and haul back away from the way it tensions thus releasing its grip on the belt. Its handy to have another set of hands at this point but not vital. My Dakota needed a belt the other day, the guys at Speedy Lube quoted my wife $50, I bought a "Gator Grip" belt for $24, we changed it in the driveway in 2 minutes. That kind of quick and sucessful repair is great for increasing your mechanic quotient in front of the wife. -Curt Date: Sat, 13 Aug 2005 19:50:14 -0700 From: David Brodbeck <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [MBZ] OT: Replacing 1999 Chevy Malibu V6 alternator To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 My SO's Chevy Malibu ate its alternator yesterday. Re: [MBZ] AC Dead
THe F15 30A fuse was added in 1987. It's for the blower motor only. It looks like the glow relay fuse, but is 30A instead of 80A. The blower fan in my '87 300SDL stopped working when I drove aver a bump Friday afternoon. It has been slow to start at times - taking several minutes after the car is started, instantly starting other times. The F15 fuse was OK, so I went looking for the blower motor. It's a LOT easier to get at thanthe one in a 115 chassis, but a lot harder to get to than the 107 blower. Anyway, when I removed the lower cover (with the porcupine attached) the red wire to the motor was disconnected. It might have come off when I dropped the cover, but with the resistance required to pull it off after I plugged it back on, I don't think so. I also read in the MB Technical Companion (that someone on the list recently recommended) that worn blower motor brushes also cause the similar problems. I'll be watching to see what happens. Re: [MBZ] OT: Replacing 1999 Chevy Malibu V6 alternator
Leave it to GM to make even a simple alternator removal a complicated procedure that requires 47 special tools. I was hoping to replace it myself, but I need a little guidance if any of you are familiar with this car, as I don't have a shop manual. It's a 1999 V6 model. The alternator is smack dab on top of the engine, so it's accessable, at least. Here are my questions: 1. How does it unbolt? I see one bolt facing the fender, in front of the alternator, that looks like it holds it in place. There's another at an angle, facing the firewall, behind the alternator...is that the other one? Are there any more? (By "in front" I mean "towards the front of the car.") 2. Re: [MBZ] AC Dead
Blower fuse is a 25A (red?) fuse, won't be anything else on the circuit -- I believe this is #8. There is a separate fuse for the ACC, don't know which one. Both, obviously, must be good. Try pushing the max fan button, too -- could have a bad blower resistor. Peter

Manifold heat control valves? How do I free them up? I'm guessing they open when it gets wamr enough? Thx -- Original message -- > George, > I agree with both Mitch and Peter. Re: [MBZ] 72 250 stalls at drive
Thanks Peter, switched them over and set the timing to 4 atdc and put it in reverse and it did not die. Woohoo! Now I need to check if the advance still works. Thanks for your help.
