what other special tools are absolutely required? The FSM makes note
of a few such as the timing chain slide-rail puller, but I figured I'd
ask because sometimes alternatives can be improvised. Also, can part
of the exhaust manifold (and the turbo possibly) be left attached to
the cylinder head when it's being removed?

You're going to need the XZN driver, a breaker bar, a couple of M6-1.0 bolts
probably two inches in length, a few flat washers, couple of bolts to thread
on it, and a 3/4 inch nipple from the plumbing department. On top of that,
I think it was 13mm bolts on the exhaust and some 10mm bolts on the
valve cover. You'll also need alan wrenches (4, 5, or 6mm, can't remember)
to get the intake apart. If the fan/fan clutch is still on the car, you'll
need to either yank it with dave's spinner tool, or you'll need to yank the
radiator so you can get to it with a normal wrench. You'll probably also want
a 19mm for the chain tensioner, and a 1/2 drive extension and a 15-17mm
socket for the cam portion of the timing chain (the extension is to immobilize
the cam gear).

Hopefully it isn't too difficult to get under the car in the junkyard,
it's easiest to get the head out with the exhaust manifold and turbo attached.

I was able to lift the head with turbo out with my brother's help. What had
me the most sore wasn't that, but busting all the head bolts loose. THAT
really had me.

PS: If anyone's in the SF Bay Area and can possibly lend a hand
tomorrow morning, shoot me an email off list...

If you haven't gotten it yet, I might be able to lend a hand over the
weekend. I live in on the peninsula, but am ungodly busy during the week.

I'm going to assume that this is a #17 or later head. The #14s aren't
worth repairing, and you usually don't know until after a machinist tests
it with pressure that it is or is not going to work.

If they got out and stayed out, those were the ones who the system was
capable of helping. For others, (I hope it's a minority) the welfare
system is more crippling than enabling. Those are the ones who will
just piss away anything you give them, and raise up another generation
in their image. Since their only way of getting a pay raise is from
breeding, the next generation is often a big one.

When you mention the ills of palming off your culls on others, I think

Re: [MBZ] OT - Eagle Talon / Mitsu Eclipse

2005-09-21 Thread Steve MacSween
Wll, let's put it this way: the first generation cars were not that bad.
In fact, I may buy one. Always wanted an AWD sporty car.

However, this is a 'G2' (their parlance, a 97 to be exact) and if you read
the boards and FAQs it's quite beyond all imagination how badly they blew
it. If they had been selling these cars to lawyers and physicians there
would have been a massive class action lawsuit long ago.

I have been on Alfa, FIAT and Jaguar lists and NOWHERE, and I mean NOWHERE
have I seen a litany of nearly incurable engine management defects to match
what I see owners reporting for these cars. It's a towering disgrace. I
guess the problem lies in the fact that these are small engines (2.0 litres)
but are tuned to the Nth degree. Any hairsbreath variance in any input to
the computer and you have an almost undriveable car. And the OBDs aren't
worth parrot snot. And the computers are incredibly sensitive, not to
mention poorly spec'd and constructed (most unreliable CPU in the world,
according to one rebuilder).

I am just trying to get my friend out from under this thing. Shame, as it's
a wonderful car to drive. Sticks to the road like glue and no trace of FWD
torque steer I can find.

May The Great Cosmic Noodle strike me dead if I EVER say another word about
Robert Borscht electronics, after reading the Talon boards. If you don't
believe me, just look 'em up, and read n'weep.

What's the problem with recycling waste matter? If I could cheaply run
my car off of table scraps, yard waste, and dead animals, why wouldn't
I? It's recycling of otherwise discarded waste unless you compost.

The only reason I wouldn't convert my dog to biodiesel is because I'm

It look a bit like a mushroom growing out the top of your injection pump.
There *should* be a tamper-proof cap over the top of it (covering the
screw). If the cap is not there, someone else has had at it, already.

This only applies to turbo cars. I only mention that as your ps mentions a
  1980 300d, which will be non-turbo.

No no no. You've got it all wrong:

When Osama bin Laden died, he was met at the Pearly Gates by George
Washington, who slapped him across the face and yelled, How dare you try to
destroy the nation I helped conceive!

Patrick Henry approached, punched him in the nose and shouted, You wanted
to end our liberties but you
failed.

James Madison followed, kicked him in the groin and said, This is why I
allowed our government to provide for the common defense!

Thomas Jefferson was next, beat Osama with a long cane and snarled, It was
evil men like you who inspired me to write the Declaration of Independence.
The beatings and thrashings continued as George Mason, James Monroe and 66
other early Americans unleashed their anger on the terrorist leader.

As Osama lay bleeding and in pain, an Angel appeared. Bin Laden wept and
said, This is not what you promised me.

The Angel replied, I told you there would be 72 Virginians waiting for you
in Heaven. What did you think I said?

Re: [MBZ] Using dead cats as fuel

2005-09-21 Thread TimothyPilgrim
Now there's an idea:

Find out which breed of cat has the best energy content, then clone
from a single specimen, further refining the offspring generation by
generation to yield the highest amount of energy possible per
individual. Then place them in homes of diesel people who happen to
like cats where they can be raised until maturity, when a
pre-engineered gene is triggered to euthanize the cat at the
appropriate age. Then the cat carcass is returned to the biodiesel
collective where it is processed, and a new kitten is given to the
family to raise again. People like me who prefer dogs will have to pay
a small premium since we don't share in the raising of the stored
energy furball.

The collective's slogan could be Put a tiger in your tank. Oh wait,
that might be taken...

It look a bit like a mushroom growing out the top of your injection pump.
There *should* be a tamper-proof cap over the top of it (covering the
screw). If the cap is not there, someone else has had at it, already.

This only applies to turbo cars. I only mention that as your ps
mentions a
  1980 300d, which will be non-turbo.

Oh nooo, another synthetic oil thread.

Kirk,
My experience has been just the opposite. Not with a large number of late
model client cars like you can refer to, but with just my two 123's and two
124 diesels. With Castrol and whatever the PO used, these cars started out
with lots of sludge under the filler cap and in the drain pan.
After a few changes with Mobil 1, the sludge went away and the fresh oil
started keeping more of an oil color and less of a diesel black color for
the first day or so after a change. Perhaps the extended change intervals -
like 12k to 20k miles - allows enough time for even synthetic to build up
sludge. I always change at 5k (probably too often by most standards) and I
always have a clean machine :)

Ned,

Pls excuse my jumping in. Now that I’ve switched our 82 300SD, 84 300SD and
95 E300D to Mobil 1, I have to agree with your comments regarding “oil
color”. As for the change intervals, the 95 E300D’s maintenance schedule
calls for 7,500 miles. Based on our driving conditions, I tend to change oil
annually. So far, that seems to be just fine.

[MBZ] Diesels for Sale

2005-09-21 Thread Alan Duff
I've got more projects than time so I need to eliminate some cars. Have
two diesels I'd like to sell.

1981 300SDL - Dark blue with tan leather interior, with sunroof Cracks on
the front seats. 318k miles. Engine and transmission are sound. Tranny has
a slow leak around the pan area. No body rust. Paint is fair, it would
clean up ok, but has some age cracks. Rear grommet under the brake fluid
resevoir leaks. ACC works but blows hot. Could be driven home if you are
prepared to fix the brakes first. $500.

1983 300SD - Dark blue with tan MB-Tex interior, with sunroof. 275k miles.
Front seats have cracks and drivers seat spring/pad is shot. Engine and
transmission are sound with the shift to 2nd a bit hard, but not bad. No
rust, clear coat is faded on the hood, top and trunk. ACC works and blows
just a bit cool, needs charged. Could be driven home but the tires look
dry-rotted to me. I can get some good used ones mounted at buyers cost.
$1,500

Email me off list if interested, willing to negotiate on price. Cars are
at my workplace, 15 miles south of Knoxville, TN. Can have pictures
tomorrow

I've got a bad ball joint on my 190D euro. I think that RRing it,

Is the MBparts alignment worth twice the mcparts?

The parts may or may not be worth it - the mercedes part is likely a trw
joint, which is likely what napa will end up with.

The catch comes with the alignment, which is likely the only thing worth
paying a dealer to service. Most shops can't deal with the fact that
mercedes have centering pins in the steering that should be used, should
have a spreader bar used because the linkage is behind the steering (though
a really sharp tech can get around this), and because there is SO much
adjustment available in not only the front but also the rear that everything
has to be spot on or it won't align correctly.

Removing and replacing is likely a piece of cake. Since you've already
resolved yourself to getting an alignment, get your hands on a spring
compressor and remove the lower control arm, which is fairly easy to do if
you don't have a really rusty car. If the bushing on the LCA is tired, you
have two ways you can go - call up rusty and order an LCA (which comes loaded
with a ball joint and bushing), or just replace the bushing as well. A tired
bushing will make it difficult to align the car. If the bushing is fine,
take the LCA down to a shop and have them pop out the old joint and press a
new one in. They'll probably want somewhere between $20 and $40 to do that
work for you. Then bolt the LCA back in, and get the car aligned.

The other option is getting the joint out yourself with a press. The proper
tool will probably cost a pretty penny, but I have heard of people popping
the joint out with a harbor freight ball joint kit. One of them actually
bent the press though.

If you do one side, you should inspect the other side. I did not do this
on the front of my 190D yet, but you should. If one went, the other is
probably getting tired, and you'll save in the long run in not needing another
alignment.

Caterpiller, Detroit) and so it's been a hard sell.

I've only talked to a couple folks who have driven them. They had no
complaints.

They fellows I've talked to that have the Sprinters sure like the MB
engine in those!

Well, first you have a 602 2.5L anyway, but I get 28-31 most of the
time. Lowest was 27 in the mountains (uphill side), highest was 36,
but I think that was a fillup error. Normal milage for that car is
32-34.

Re: [MBZ] 201 ball joint

2005-09-21 Thread Peter Frederick

We bent the press on the W126 ball joint, it's much harder to get to.

You need an adapter tube of some sort for removal -- a pile of big
washer will work. The adapters with the Harbor Freight tool work going
back in.

Ball joint RR isn't bad, you can leave the spring in IF you set the
control arm down on a jack stand so the weight of the car stays on the
spring. You CANNOT remove the control arm this way, and CANNOT do the
bushings unless you have an internal spring compressor like a Klann.
The strut is self aligning, so you don't have to worry about getting it
back in right.

However, you must use an alignment shop familiar with Benz strut type
front ends, or you will very likely have a car that drives squirrely
and eats front tires due to excessive toein.

Re: [MBZ] Daimler Chrysler diesel - MB commercial engines

2005-09-21 Thread Peter Frederick
The diesel in the Jeep is a Detriot 18:1 compression ratio american
made clatterbox. Loud, requires a 6 speed auto tranny, and has a HUGE
turbo, long stroke direct injection.

They never learn, eh?
