Re: [MBZ] Big Brother is Nearby --- WAS---- W140 Vs W126

2006-12-02 Thread LarryT

Hi Vince,
Well put. I know TV and real life have little in common but on shows
like Law & Order when a suspectis being questions they often ask, "Do I need
a lawyer?" and the police usually reply with a "Why do you need a lawyer of
you did't do anything?" because they know a lawyer will advise them to stay
quiet. It appears often the police have little to go on until the suspect
starts talking!

The ability to not be forced to admit guilt is a long standing right -
which is based on the English legal system as are many of our laws.

Well, I hoped this thread would generate some conversation!! It certainly
did *that*!!

Hmmm, I still don't understand the 5th..why would an innocent person
use

it?
So basically, using the 5th is a tacit admission of guilt, no?

If I caused serious accident, I'd admit faultwhere's the problem?

Jeff Zedic

It's protection from zealous prosecutors with conviction quotas
(self-imposed included) who know the letter of the law and can use it
against a citizen's ignorant non-intent to break them. The less you say,
the less ammo they can drum up against you to win in court.

The other edge is it certainly CAN be considered by a jury or judge as an
admission of guilt to not say anything. I'd think if you were honest and
good intentioned without reasonable or predictaible negligence it would be
the best thing for your case. But, it seems sadly today conventional
wisdom

from the best defense lawyers and proven results for the innocent and the
guilty is to keep your mouth shut at all costs.

Thus, everyone should get the option. Defending youself in court is
considered stupid too. Getting a lawyer admits guilt, or at least
rightfully founded fear of your true actions and the evidence they may
bear

OR innocence in the face of potential conviction. If the prosecuter knows
all the laws and you come in with a speech, the ruling will simply go to
the

better presented legal case, and you'd likely lose.

PS- If everyone admited fault, the term "hit and run" would not exist!

As far as I know, most single-payer systems allow you to pick your own
doctor. It's not like you're assigned one at birth or something.
Ironically, in our ostensibly free-market system I have less choice of
who to go to every year, as they keep paring down the list of

Although more than half of BMWs are Diesels, both in turbo and non-turbo
form, they only brought in about 3500 into the USA in 1985 and 1986. These
ARE awesome cars, fast and excellent handling drivers. I drove my '85 for
almost 90k miles before getting my '90 300D 2.5, and made the big mistake of
selling the BMW. When I sold mine, it was using a quart of oil about every
2500 miles, no doubt to driving it hard a lot of the time. But the car
never failed to start, never quit on the road, and my wife even admitted
that it was fun to drive.
From my experience, only the latest Mercedes CDIs out-perform these cars,
and may actually not handle as well since BMW has designed and made their
reputation with world-class "handling" drivability, vs. luxury ride ability.
The 2.4L 6 cylinder engine is smooth, powerful, and durable, and was also
used in Lincoln LSC Coupes as well as a line of Class C motor homes.
But asking $5k is a bit much for this car, IMO in view of the age and
mileage.

The first M-B "A Class" vehicles did have a stability issue (the infamous
Swedish Moose test), which resulted in a big recall and redesign. AFAIK,
all the A Class cars now pass that test, so stability is no more of an issue
than in any other car. (and they don't make a 3.8L A Class, except the
special one-off twin engine job that was built for Miko Hakkinen)

The last item (the one still active) bears some caution. They advertise it
as a 524TD, but in the description its called a 525i, which is a 2.5 L gas
engine used in the NEXT series after this body style. The '85s came ONLY in
2.4L TurboDiesel and 2.8 L and 3.5 L gas engines in the USA.
Also, note that the rear window, radio, and antenna don;t work, and they
admit that the mileage may not be correct. All of the above says "Warning!"

Well, just figured if he was messing with a couple small screws and pliers
that he probably doesn't have an easy-out.
Only drawback would be they are designed to bite into metals. They
expend alot of force in an outward direction so they bite in harder as you
turn..Would that make the plastic expand and bind on the radiator itself
causing the plug to be harder to remove. The screw wouldn't do that.

I've broken the outside off mine before & did a quick swap. At the most,
you'll loose a pint or coolant.

Drain, fill drain fill, after de oiling, de calcifying and finishing with
a prestone drive around flush my little screw plug broke on the bottom of
Beher radiator. It is in place but the screw driver part and rubber
piece

just kind of fell off with the last tighting. Plug is in there and
holding coolant but I need to replace.

How would the list suggest I remove the old one and quickly put in a new
one? I thought of screwing two small thin screws in and removing with
pliers. Any thoughts please Car is a 1979 240D

Well, just figured if he was messing with a couple small screws and

that he probably doesn't have an easy-out.

Or a left-hand drill bit.

I'd use a very sharp pointed object, like a dentist's pick, and poke it at
a point on the periphery and slowly rotate it out. Come to think of it,
that's exactly what I did when I broke one off myself last summer.

It wasn't so long ago I picked up the Gumball Rally at Wal-Mart for like $9.
Its a double feature with Cannonball Run II.

CBR II sucks but the Gumball Rally is worth the $9 all by itself.

If it was bad enough I HAD to take the snowmobile I wouldn't be going very
far.. My normal commute is 54 miles one way.

I'm actually in MA, the whole other coast. No snow here yet, they're saying
maybe flurries tommorow night into Monday. I got my new to me Cub Cadet out
today, changed the oil and got the snowplow mounted so it probably won't snow a
flake.
No snowtires on my 190D yet, the all seasons are in good shape so as long as we
don't have serious snow (rare before new year here) I shouldn't have any
troubles, I'll get some bagged sand tomorrow never the less.

As far as I'm concerned you're half right, everybody should have a set of left
hand drill bits. Every time I've used an Easy Out (particularly a cheap one)
its broken. Once an Easy Out breaks you're screwed... Fortunately in all cases
I've been able to use a punch and break the easy out (they're real hard) but
I've had friends that had to burn them out with a torch.
If I'm going to drill I'd rather just drill with the intention of drilling as
close to the threads as I dare and running a tap or a chase through.

going to help me get a bite on this thing and remove it please.

Well, often when drilling left-handedly, the force of the bit,
especially if it 'bites' into the body can sometimes start backing
out the thing all on its own. Of course, if it makes it all the
way through without doing this then you've got an unpluggable
hole to deal with.

You might be able to carefully chisel a slot in it and then turn
it out with a big flat bladed screwdriver.

If that doesn't work, it occurs to me that a common technique for
removing broken bolts and stuck studs is to weld a nut to them. Maybe
you could carefully epoxy something to the stuck plug. Just don't
compound your problem by gluing it in place. ;)

Folks, why not take a flat soldering tip and "melt" a slot in the plastic

Good idea. The fact that it's plastic is why my use of a dentist's pick
worked when I had to do the same thing.

Werner I like your techique. I will either use a small wood chisel to work
a screw driver slot or use a soldering gun to melt a slot. The exposed
area is plastic.

Thanks for the help/Tom

Folks, why not take a flat soldering tip and "melt" a slot in the plastic
(the plug that broke is plastic, right?), then you can use a screwdriver
to

turn it out?

I am a little slow. If I go with the left handed drill bit how is that
going to help me get a bite on this thing and remove it please.

[MBZ] In need of a new rig

2006-12-02 Thread Zeitgeist

I'm testing the waters to see if I can locate a suitable replacement for my
wife's reliable but aging and ugly W123.

Criteria:

I'd like to find something a bit newer and with some safety equipment, like
ABS and airbags. Additionally, I'd like the vehicle to get better fuel
mileage (diesel, of course). I'd like to spend < $7k

Candidates (in order of preference):

1 - '87 190D 2.5 turbo
2 - '90-'93 300D 2.5 turbo
3 - '87 300D/TD
4 - '96-'97 Passat tdi

Anyone know of a suitable vehicle meeting these criteria?

TIA

Most men want to spend time in the garage. As for me, I'd much rather be in
the kitchen -- cooking, not eating.
