I pretty much nailed it down to what Kaleb suggests: Bad #1 rod bearing, collapsed #1 rings. Viruses attack Windows only because Windows is 80% of the installed base. It's not worth the effort to write viruses for the rest (Linux Apple) because the installed base is too small to spread effectively. If Linux Windows were to swap places, or if Linux grows to more than 30% of the installed base, then Linux will have a very serious virus issue. Major organizations like UAB who are running Linux are experiencing serious issues now. Their Novel server farm is under constant attack they have hade to resort to double firewalls, IP filtering and very expensive software to keep the bad guys out. OK, first of all viruses vs hacker exploits are apples and oranges. Any system can be hacked, but a Linux system is typically secure against damage from viruses. Over over again, I've seen very intelligent people well respected companies make the same claims you are making and over over again, they were proven wrong, usually by a 17 year old cranking out code from home. There is no such thing as a system that can't be hacked and there is no such thing as a system that can't be attacked by a virus. If it has not been done yet then they just haven't figured out how (yet). Give the right people the right motivation there will be rampant Linux viruses bouncing around the net! By the way, I've been a UNIX developer, a forth developer, a C c++ developer, a Windows developer, a Novel server Manager and a Windows network manager I've seen computers grow from the UNIX work stations to today's hardware. Re: [MBZ] texas cars for kids
Call them up and ask them how it works. I don't know about the auction part. The deal is run by this CAN Academy thing which is some sort of charter school for kids who have not done well in school but this outfit somehow helps them out. When they had auctions here in Houston it seemed pretty well organized and the people knew what they were doing, more or less. Some of the kids worked in the office, learning some skills I suppose. You might also want to look at Insurance Auto Auctions -- I found out that the local PBS TV station runs their donated cars through IAA. IAA is a big outfit and they have locations all over, and auctions of their stuff (a lot of wrecks) every now and again. I think you need a salvage license but in TX it is cheap to get, probably same in OK. I looked at their web site once, they had listings of the stuff for sale in each location. --R Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: so I went ahead and decided to try bidding on a couple of cars online. So how does this work, people bid sort of like ebay before the real auction then people at the real auction can outbid those that already bid online or do none of the bids start going in till the real auction? Reason I ask is that it says I am current high bidder. That seems like there is online bidding going on right now.

A bit different from Linux (actually closer to OS X but without the glossy UI) but all the mainstream server software (Apache, sendmail, databases, etc) has been ported and many desktop-oriented apps as well. Security is the top priority of the OpenBSD team, and it's pretty bare-bones in the default install, but that's what you want for a server (run only what you need). Thanks Tom, I appreciate the help. I will probably disable my Firewall Monday - giving me another day to think about it. ;-) Sincerely, Larry T . - Original Message - From: Tom Hargrave [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Mercedes Discussion List' mercedes@okiebenz.com; 'Mercedes Discussion List' mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Saturday, March 17, 2007 5:39 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Vista hitstherecyclers-hijackedtoMSOffice/Outlookreplacement Larry, I should have noted that you are feeding your desk top lap top computers. This means that your router is set up correctly. It would not be providing an IP address for each machine if it were not. The Belkin router was configured by Comcast - aalthough we used it straight out of the box for the most part - What more should have been done to be a a properly configured router ? Since I shouldn't need a firewall, do I need an Anti-virus? Can a virus get thru? Eliminating those 2 programs would speed up my systems quite a bit IMO. I kinda understand what you're saying about a router - but if the broadband gets thru why not a hacker? If uninstalliing resolves the issue then I'd push for a full refund or a solution. One real issue with Windows is the continued poor quality of some software vendors. Another real issue with Windows is computer owners installing multiple anti-virus firewall programs. Neither of these issues are Mocrosoft or Windows fault. By the way, if you have a router installed then you don't need a firewall, not even Windows firewall because a properly configured hardware router is the best firewall you can buy. Why? Because the bad guys can't reach through the box to your machine. Plus, the firewall is away from your machine. With a software firewall, the bad guys are already inside your machine and you are depending on the firewall to keep them from going further. But Symantec the other software jockeys won't tell you this because they would sell less worthless software. Anti-virus software is a different story. By the way, Windows is attacked so frequently because it's 80% of the install base. Apple is just as vulnerable and Lynux is more vulnerable but the virus writers don't bother. They are much happier attacking the 80% install base. If the roles were reversed and Lunux or Apple were on top then everyone would be bashing that OS for its vulnerabilities. I have little doubt that program is the problem. The continuing problem is that neither I nor the tech folks at XP Repair Pro 2007 can figure out how to get Outlook to download and send email. I check for spyware regularly, though I don't expect that is the problem. It remains a mystery, but one that is merely annoying, not a show stopper. And over 90 percent of the issues I resolve can be attributed to one of three causes. 1. Hardware not up the task, usually not enough memory. 2. Poorly written or incorrectly configured aftermarket application. For example, aftermarket firewall and Windows firewall turned on. 3. A rogue application (spyware, etc) running, usually downloaded from a porn or
