[MBZ] SL weather

2007-04-07 Thread Jim Cathey

It's SL time again here! I've been driving the for-sale 450 SL
again this last week. The saga:

Saturday, March 31, 2007

Dug the car out of storage in its deep hole in the back of the garage.
(Four cars shoehorned into a three-car garage.) Uneventful, though I
can never seem to back it out as easily as it went into the far
corner, and it started right up. Washed it. We used it as a
datemobile, though with the top on.

The door lock vacuum system is leaking down in only a few hours, I
think I'll have to dive into that again.

Sunday, April 1, 2007

Made new stick-ons for the for-sale signs. The link had changed, as
had the asking price! Family had a nice drive to church, the booster
seat also works well in the rear bucket with the auxiliary seat belt.

Divide and conquer. I teed off the rear two vacuum elements in the
trunk, we'll see if the doors hold vacuum. The MityVac indicated that
the rear might have a tear somewhere (a variable leakdown rate, it
actually seemed worse at low vacuum levels), but it's not entirely
reliable. (Its release valve leaks sometimes.) The golf tee will
give me some good information, in time.

Monday, April 2, 2007

No, even with the trunk capped off it still leaks down quickly. Will
need to do a more involved diagnosis. Car is running well otherwise,
though.

Wednesday, April 4, 2007

When I went out into the garage this morning I smelled raw gasoline.
My wife had filled up the car last night, so I checked and found that
she had again put the gas cap on backwards. (For whatever reason, it
only seals properly one of the two ways you can install it. The
gasket is good, and a different cap also leaked. I suspect that the
filler neck is slightly deformed.) Gas will leak out on corners if
it's on the wrong way. The black orientation arrow I'd drawn on it
with a Sharpie had again worn off. So this morning I cut out an arrow
shape in a piece of masking tape and painted the arrow on the cap.
Two coats of primer, two of black paint. I put the cap in the shop
oven to dry between coats. We'll see if that arrow lasts longer, and
we'll see if she remembers/notices how it's supposed to point.

I dug out the foam 'football' vacuum pump I use for cruise control
testing. (This is a lot quicker to deploy than the main shop vacuum
pump.) I rigged a tee, vacuum gauge, and check valve to the line that
goes to the car's vacuum reservoir and pumped it down to 13" Hg. It
held rock-solid at that level while I puttered around for awhile, so
I buttoned up the car. We'll see how it reads tomorrow, I suspect that
(of course) the leaking is not in the tank but it'll be good to
formally eliminate it as a suspect. I'd feel pretty stupid tearing
into the car

only to find that it was the tank all along!

...After work I checked and the vacuum was still solidly at 13" Hg. I
think I can safely say that there are no leaks there. Will check
again in the morning to be sure.

Aargh! I found a shiny bit of plastic in the rear footwell, some
examination shows it to be the remains of the bezel from around the
seatback latch handle. How the heck did that get broken? I suspect
my wife, who drove the car yesterday evening. She can be a bit
ham-handed when she gets frustrated, even more so than myself, and
that does machinery no favors. Can't repair it since it's not all
there. It's a dealer item, assuming I can still get one. Crap. She
claims to know nothing about it, I guess it's going to be one of the
great mysteries of life.

Thursday, April 5, 2007

No, no perceptible loss of vacuum in 24 hours. The check valve also
seemed good and passed the hang-from-my-tongue test. Got to dive into
the doors next, I guess.

I bought another for-sale sign for the side window today. Cheap at
twice the price if it has any positive effect! I tuck it between the
inner wipe strip and the glass, this will even work with the top off
and the window down.

Friday, April 6, 2007

I removed the glovebox liner to expose the vacuum hoses. The
splitters behind the dash are too deeply buried in the corner to
access except by fingertip, so I cut the lines where they cross the
glovebox opening. The vacuum test rig, when applied to the downstream
(door, filler, and trunk) lines showed them to be clear of leaking.
The upstream lines, when capped off, still showed leakage from the
main feed. This points clearly towards the vacuum switch in the
driver's door. (Which was brand new a few years ago.) I now have
many junkyard valves to play with, so that will be the next step.
There's also an adjustment that may be out of whack. Out of time, I
put everything back together with two 'new' rubber joints where I cut
the lines.

I also readjusted the trunk latch to make it operate better with the
locking system. A washer under the latch plate at the bottom screw
did wonders for relieving some rubbing that made the button stick
sometimes.

Yesterday I dropped my fuel/vacuum gauge while pu

Could the vacuum fuel shutoff be stuck? Unhook it and blow (by mouth)
into the line, then repeat the experiment with it still unhooked.
You can use the manual shutoff to kill the motor should you get it
started, or hook the brown line back up.

2007-04-07 Thread E M

Thanks John,

I"m still not 100% clear on the oil drain thing? So the oil isn't drained
through a drain plug in the bottom of the crank?

20W-50 seems heavy to me too. But the book seems to call for that. Funny
thing is, if I'm reading it right, if the temp is consistantly hot, you can
run a (15W-40 I think, don't have the book here). Why run thin when cold,
then switch to thicker as it gets hot, then if it remains really hot, switch
to a thinner grade? Did I miss something or not read the manual correctly?

Thanks again,

well I just buy Mobil Devac 1 5w40 in 20 quart pails and use it in
everything, keeps

20w50 seems heavy, but I ran 15w50 in my 300TE when in california

The engine is designed to pump he oil out of and then not mess with
removal and stripping of oil plug, and loosing screws for lower

I recall there is a puller/clamp thing to use to pull the boots off

[MBZ] More W124 gaser questions??

2007-04-07 Thread E M

Hi Everyone,

Want to do an oil change soon. Still freezing here, so won't get to the
change for a few days. The gas engine has 320,000 kms on it, and from what
I can make out, when used in hot weather, it calls for a 20W-50 dino oil.
Is this the right grade for non synthetic stuff? also, do you have to pull
that bottom tray off to get to the drain bolt? I haven't rolled on the
ground yet to really look for it due to the cold. Where do I find the oil
filter? I know, all pretty basic questions, but this is the first one on a
benz. hee hee. Any other pointers when changing the oil and plugs? I have
the plugs too. Do I just pop the over off the wires to inspect them all? I
can see a small chip in the cover, so didn't know if someone used a screw
driver to pop it off when, as in typical German fashion, there is a complex
series of steps to take first? :-)

Had the rear control armes changed the other day. Guy said it was a job
getting them out, but the car rides very nice now. Was fine before too, but
I could feel some sideways motion when cornering harder, which ofcourse is
the only way to go around corners. :-)

First nice day, the 300E, 911 and wagon are all getting oil changes, along
with the mowers. I"m going to try the synth stuff in one mower Larry, just
for fun. I have two pro Toro mowers, so maybe I'll run synth in one and
dino in the other. I think they will make a good test lab as if I alternate
using both this summer, they are easy to break down in the fall and see if
there are any differences between the two.

Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend and Happy Easter to those who
celebrate.

And as for the pop-starting thing: It would take a ton more pushing to

Was wondering if anyone has ever tried this: In cold weather,
attempting to
start a manual tranny diesel: Before doing anything else: pushing the
vehicle a few feet and then popping the clutch out in first gear (or
reverse
might be geared lower?), thus hopefully achieving some engine rotation
(and
thereby relieving the starter of the task of lurching the near-frozen
engine
into motion)? Then proceeding with the appropriate starting procedure?

I used to do this with my motorcycle, thinking I was helping the
battery not
have work so hard to get the engine turning on cold mornings.

So what about the fuel pump? Should you not get fuel out of the
return line if the fuel pump is working, that would be excess fuel
the IP isn't using.

miles, and then it's either the electrical contacts in the solenoid or
the armature/brushes burning - not any mechanical issue due to extra
load. Jusy use it - don't worry about it.

I used line that was rated for fuel injection (higher pressure than gravity

The holes are likely a result of friction where the rubber mount got
hard and let grit in,

And/or rust where water was trapped there.

I've had the tranny cooler line bust that way.
Brazed it, as the W115 lines (not the hose, the steel line) is NA.

http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/car/307619516.html 5 124 diesel wagons from a
suspicions "failed biodiesel scheme".

http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/car/307615901.html Diesel Oldsmobile, been on
since last summer. I'm close to at least going and seeing it. I don't want the
car but a 350ci diesel thats still running must be a good one. Get one of the
kits to put it in an S10 and you'd have something very interesting...

Wash them with a nice slug of ammonia added in the washer -- this
usually get the oil out. Another option is to add a goodly dose of
Oxyclean.

Worst case they make nice fire starters.

Hello fellow MB-ers. I have an opportunity to pick one up for nothing
since
the owner and his father want it gone from the driveway. I believe it's a
'78 which would mean that it's a German-made Rabbit not the US or Mexican
models since it has round headlights and the horizontally slotted grill.
The story is that the alt gave out and it wasn't thought of as being worth
fixing. The car has been sitting for 2 or three years, so the plan is to
set it up with a known good battery, fresh fuel and filters, and see what
happens. I'm not sure if it needs oil put into the cylinders for added
lubrication for the first few revs before oil pressure can be established,
but it's easy enough to do. It's straight and has an OK interior, but it
needs a MAJOR MAJOR cleanup. If it works out, it will be Papa's run
around
town car. I believe it has a 4 speed manny tranny which could be quite
fun.

Not sure how the forumla changed over the years, but certain little
changed cars lost about 10-15% during the mid 1980's. My 1989 Horizon,
1980 citation, and 1979 300SD all beat their ratings. I got 35-37mpg
delivering pizza in the Horizon when it was new, EPA rated 24-34.
I don't remember the EPA on the Citation, but it got 38mpg commuting
at 55mph, and I didn't own it until it had 145,000 miles on it.

Who people? Me people? No way man, I gots a penguin...

Anyway upgrading any OS is asking for trouble. Even on the Mac in OS 9 it was
smart to do a "clean install" which made a new system folder and reduced the
incidence of issues...
Upgrading an OS is for chumps, doesn't matter which OS.

Besides who thinks "I've got an 11am appointment, I'll just upgrade my OS"? It

I used to do this with my motorcycle, thinking I was helping the
battery not

have work so hard to get the engine turning on cold mornings.

I always found the kick-starter to be more congenial for such
purposes. Most of our bikes were a bit cold-blooded, so a good
round of stomps did wonders for getting them going at first.
Bikes of that era didn't tend to have very big electrical
systems. They were also carbureted, so tended to be a bit
fussier about that whole 'running' thing.

No kick starter? Not a real bike then! :-)

For the Benz? I just start 'em per the owner's manual.
If I want to make it easier on everything I just plug in
the block heater for a bit. (Which on the Winternheap
also runs a battery charger.)

start it entirely?

I suppose technically if you timed everything perfectly it could potentially
be a little less strain on the starter, but I'd never do it. I'm just going
to start the car normally, OR I'm going to pop start it. And I'm only going
to pop start it if for some reason I don't think it's going to start

Re: [MBZ] OT: cities with the safest drivers

2007-04-07 Thread Zoltan Finks

I would guess that the Volvo drivers that are so crummy are the young folk
whose parents have bestowed upon them their Swedish safety mobile. Unless
you are talking about drivers of newer high-end Volvos which drive about the
same as those who pilot newer Audis (in an entitled and irresponsible
fashion).

I find that here in Southeastern Minnesota, the worst drivers tend to be
behind the wheel of Pontiac Grand something-or-others, Saturns and newer
Monte Carlos and Luminas. (in other words, young white trash). This is not
to mention the road-owning operators of full-sized 4x4s.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have the drivers in a certain town I
pass through on my commute, where the overwhelming vehicle of choice is the
Buick. I know I'm going to be late when one of these slowly enters the
roadway in front of me from a side street.

As far as "safe" drivers: as long as laziness and selfishness rule (which
will be always), driving will continue to be a losing proposition. Accidents
are when - not if. Makes caring about your vehicle a losing proposition as
well.

Re: [MBZ] FTP experiment

2007-04-07 Thread Jim Cathey

Your experiment fails in a number of places because of M$'s use of
backslashes instead of slashes for directory level separators.

For those of you running Mac OSX, you can use this little script
I wrote for my HD installations. You just run it in the right
directory and it makes long names that include backslashes (which
in Unix are just another character; in fact, the only 'special'
characters of the 256 in Unix are '/' and NULL). I called it
'fixlinks'. After you run it the stuff all just works.

#!/bin/sh

# Because the Flash garbage on the Mac butchers pathnames
# (uses backslashes instead of slashes in URL's) we can patch
# around this by making hard links to messed-up names for all
# the files that are properly found in subdirectories.

Not sure how the forumla changed over the years, but certain little
changed cars lost about 10-15% during the mid 1980's. My 1989 Horizon,
1980 citation, and 1979 300SD all beat their ratings. I got 35-37mpg

I don't remember the EPA on the Citation, but it got 38mpg commuting
at 55mph, and I didn't own it until it had 145,000 miles on it.
