[MBZ] The Hendrik and Roger show

2007-12-20 Thread Hendrik Fay
This would depend which model Toy hota one would consider to be
equivalent in the C class bracket, over here we get two main flavors the
Aurion which is a size of a E class and the Corolla (which no self
respecting bloke would be caught dead owning) which is probably in the B
or A class size I suppose.
Given that a base corolla starts at 20K Oz beans and the base C class
starts a 60K beans I suppose I would have to amend my earlier statement
to a 1/3 of the price, sorry for getting you all flustered Roger.
Actually the Aurion is not a bad looking car and has a 200KW V6 but is
front wheel drive.

KHR

Roger rogered:

That would be an extremely used Toyota.

My W123 240D had a probem with drivers door - had to slam it several times.
Later found some debris in the hole in the bracket on the door post - it has
a hole that receives the pin mounted on the door.Didn;t take much junk
to prevent the pin going all the way in - due to the wedge design.

You can do that, put the car on stands, then put a floor jack under the
LCA and push it up a bit (not enough to lift the car) then you can undo

someone had tried to dry a gas tank with a hair dryer and all seemed
OK for a while until boom and suddenly the gas tank looked like an
 overinflated football.

Be careful out there...

Date: Tue, 09 Feb 1999 22:17:24 +
From: Colin Miller [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Increasing Capacity of Gas Tank

Hello,

I was debating whether to share this story with you all but after the
'valve job' thread I think it would be appropriate. This happened to me
on Monday:

I pulled the gas tank out of the old car to clean, rustproof and paint
it. It had been sitting for about 10 years and it seemed like a good
idea. I drained as much as I could from the fuel line before I removed
it and then turned it upside down and emptied the rest. Then I dumped
some Marine Clean (industrial strength Fantastik, non-flammable) in and
sloshed it
around to dissolve the gum and varnish. It was pretty brown when I
poured it out and there were a lot of rust flakes. I thought it might
help
to just run some water through it for a while to at least get the flakes
out,
so I stuck the hose in and let it run through for a few minutes. Then
I
sloshed it around some more and rinsed with some more
Marine Clean. I figured I had gotten most of it.

To dry it, I got a hair dryer and masking taped it to
the filler opening, figuring the air would blow out the fuel line and
the return line fittings.

I turned it on and walked around the other side of the tank to see how
much air was coming out the fittings. Just then there was a really big
bang and a flash. The hairdryer is now laying a short distance away not

running and there are little shiny flakes in the air glittering as
they catch the light. And my tank that used to hold about 20
gallons now might hold about 30 gallons. I guess there was still some
gasoline gum inside the tank. Those little flakes were the insulation
from inside the hair dryer. Unfortunately the tank is now too round to
fit under the car with out dragging.
It looks very much like a bag of microwave popcorn that is done popping.

I now have another it seemed reasonable at the time stories. Does
anyone have a good tank for a 108/109? A local guy might have one but
if he doesn't I'll be looking.

Thanks,

Colin Miller

Re: [MBZ] Rusty, Kaleb, retailers

2007-12-20 Thread Gary Hurst
i am pretty sure they won't. the gov't has a nasty habit of jumping anyone
involved in online gambling and all these guys are scared to bits. they
were actually hoping to have it shut down by now, but the ACH system is so
huge and it is so easy to set up a domain, that the banks can't really know
where or from whom money is coming and going. i mean, if you make or
receive a $200 payment with bluetailfin.com, how is the bank to know whether
that is online gambling or not?

my favorite story of them all is of a fella who tried to make a payment to
an online gambling site and got a call from bank of america saying that they
cannot approve the transaction because they suspect it involves online
gambling. thinking quickly, the fella told them that he has no idea about
any sort of gambling, but that he is purchasing pornography, in particular
necrophelia and beastiality materials. there was a moment's pause, after
which he was informed that bank of america can approve that transaction.

so we once again learn that prohibition doesn't work, that it is unamerican
and that it is flat stupid and counterproductive.

Re: [MBZ] 123 frontend rebuild

2007-12-20 Thread M G
Luther,

At the risk of having people get upset with me, I
reply anyway.

I have an 83 300D so I know this worked with my car. I
had to replace the lower ball joints, so I jacked up
the car and put jack stands under it near the front.

Then I tried to put the spring compressor, which I
bought from HF, on the spring. There wasn't enough
room to use it so I decided to at least get the
springs out and have the ball joints pressed in while
I worry about getting another type of spring
compressor to put it all together later. Since I was
outside and knew that the springs could come out of
there with quite a bit of force I made sure that there
was nothing in the way to get damaged or no one there
to get hurt just in case. Mind you I don't recommend
that anyone do this as you could very likely get hurt
big time.

Then I put the floor jack right under the ball joint
and jacked up a bit so I could disconnected
everything. That done I got on the hood just to make
sure that I wouldn't be in the firing line (OK so I'm
a wimp and a scardy cat) and slowly let the jack down.
Total anticlimax in this case. Nothing happened other
then the jack went down and the spring relaxed. The
spring was all loose in place with no tension on it at
all. I made sure of that before I came down off the
hood by poking it with a stick (yes I used to poke
sleeping dogs also, I had to learn everything the hard
way). In order to get the spring out I had to push
down on the hub/control arm so that the control arm
would go down far enough for the bottom of the spring
to clear it's seat.

Like I said, that was on my car. If it will be the
same on yours I don't know. If anyone decides to try
it this way they need to be aware that they are taking
a risk of precipitating a catastrophic event that
might cause irreparable harm to life limb and
property! What can I say, I'm just a calculated risk
taker. Mind you I do not like to gamble so that should
tell you how closely I watch and assess the risks I
take.

Oh by the way, assembly was the reverse of disassembly
and also went without any problems.

Manfred

I had two of those aunts. OY! Grace and Lura. Saying their driving skills

Lura's son was with the state highway patrol and found a Ford Crown Vic
 with
the police interceptor package at auction. The car was repainted a
 bright
robin's egg blue. Stop signs and regulatory signs were only a
 suggestion
for Aunt Lura. Luckily her range was only within a few miles of home,
usually the local market and church on Sunday. She was given a wide path
as she rounded off curves and ignored intersections. After all, she was in
 90s.

Grace was the older sister with the 1978 red Mercury land yacht. As she
got older and too frail to manage the heavy doors on the coupe she traded
for a new Cadillac V-8 with the Northstar engine. She sat at a stop sign
looking left, right, left, right, anticipating to cross the main four lane
highway. Just as the Dodge Ram passed and she floored the accelerator she
realised that she hadn't noticed the $30,000. bass boat he was towing. She
sailed through it, splitting it in half.

The prize must go to old Hazel though. She had a little balding dog which
might have once been a toy poodle. FeeFee rode in the car whenever Hazel
went out. Hazel had knitted the dog a little afghan which matched the
pillows in the rear window of the 70's Chrysler Imperial. Returning one
 day
from the grocery, Hazel pressed the garage door control and proceeded to
manuever the tank into the basement garage. She glanced down and
discovered FeeFee was cold and had shifted positions. Fearing to pinch
 the
little dog with the brake pedal Hazel reacted in a split second to step on
the accelerator. The Imperial lunged forward taking out the hot water
heater, the oil furnace and exiting the other end of the basement through
 the cinderblocks.

OKJ so I have to tell another story. Right after I got married we went
to a (wife's) family reunion, mostly for her parents to show us off to
everyone, a large family. We hung around, had some food (no adult
beverages, boo). We were sitting there at a picnic table, and next to
us at another picnic table (you know the standard kind, with the
 benches
on either side, kinda A frame design), with two VERY large aunties
sitting on one side, and 2 or 3 others sitting on the other side. So
the 2 or 3 others decide to get up and go get some more food, and when
the last one raises up, the two large aunties tip the table, they go
 ass
over and all the stuff on the table piles onto them. Of course I
started laughing like hell, which signaled our visit to the picnic was
about over as it drew looks of disgust from the rest of the attendees
who felt badly for the poor dears. It was also pretty funny to watch
them trying to extricate themselves and roll around trying to get up.
  My bad!

Re: [MBZ] OT, Suburban

2007-12-20 Thread R A Bennell
I have a client who used to run a big block 4X4 Suburban. This would have been
old enough to be carb rather than
fi. He said it did about 6 mpg - summer, winter, highway, city, towing or not,
loaded or empty. Almost no
variation - just a flat 6 mpg.

I don't think I can afford one of those.

The 6.2 and 6.5 are decent diesels, and AFAIK, might be more efficient
than the original 5.7 conversion. However, the 454 gasser (AKA 7.4) is,
and always has been, a thirsty beast. IIRC a 454 Vette makes a 450SL look
thrifty, and a 'burb is worse.

Re: [MBZ] copper thieves

2007-12-20 Thread LarryT
Howdy,
ya know, rounding up on all transactions can mean millions of
dollars/franc/whatever - years ago one of the 1st computer crime involved a
programmer (or something) who added some code so each transaction was
rounded down and the 1/2 penney, 3/4 penney/whatever was put into an account
only he knew about - then as the money built up he would have that account
issue checks to bogus companies he had created -

this was at a company that processed all the produce being picked in Ca
(IIRC) so there were a LOT of transactions - every time a truck arrived full
of tomatoes they'd pay them - and there were a lot of trucks. The truck
would get, say, $10,000.018 (based on weight) and the program would round
the payment down to $10,000.01 and the extra $.008 would go his way.

This happened in the 60s or 70s I believe and not that many people were
familiar with computers - and when the programmer was making things as
complicated as possible it was even tougher to see what was happening. Of
course, he was eventually caught.

Also read that white collar criminals average $1million to $2Million
dollars per crime while people who walk into a bank and say, Stick em up.
get around $300. Not very profitable considering the risk.

Copper stealing probably takes a lot of work considering the profit
also. Risk of getting caught would seem high also - although those on this
list seem to keep getting hit -
;-)

the Government just one day said it's time to get rid of the small

Although rounding up seemed to be the outcome.

Those who own the gambling site love collecting spending your American
money. And even though it may be nickels dimes, I bet that they drag
hundreds out of your wallet every year.

I have nothing against gambling - I'll go to a casino play cards against
other players for money. I have an issue with online games where you can't
see the other players can't know if the odds have been artificially
stacked against you.

I was watching a home improvement show where they showed an
  alternative to
this for the sump pump. It's a special pump which uses pressurized
water to suck in water then off
to the waste line. When the power is off and the sump pump called for
it opens the water line and away it goes...

wastes *lots* of drinkable water, but does provide sump pump action in
  a power failure.
  was not cheap $700.

Re: [MBZ] Keeping Warm!

2007-12-20 Thread R A Bennell
Well, one never knows. Today it is much warmer but that makes it very messy.
Would like to have the royalties from
the sale of windshield washer fluid today. Sand spread on the snow/ice is
making things very dirty looking. No
fresh white snow now. February can be cold or not so cold. Usually, the worst
of the cold weather is right around
the first couple of weeks of January. Once we get beyond that we usually think
we are on the way to spring. The
days get longer and it is light later. This time of year, it is getting dark by
4:30 or 5 PM. By the end of
January, we will have gained a half hour or more of light and that makes one
feel like there is hope for better
things to come even if it does stay cold. A lot of it is a mental thing. It
really does not feel all that bad at
minus 30 at noon when the sun is shining and the sky is blue but at 5 PM when
it is dark, that feels real cold.

[MBZ] 300TD man-tran has a harsh growl in neutral

2007-12-20 Thread Euan
Hi there folks

My 1985 300TD 5-spd manual developed a harsh metallic growl yesterday.
It growls when the engine is running, with the clutch (unfamiliar to
most of you, I guess) out and the gearbox in neutral (of course).
Happened all of a sudden, and is most audible (read, very audible) at idle.

Doesn't sound to me as though the growl originates in the gearbox
anywhere near the cabin. Sounds much further forward than that, well
into the engine bay.

Any ideas?

Cheers, and Happy (growl-free) Christmas to you all.

Do you service/repair the car yourself? If so, these would be the first
things to try:

The first things to do immediately after a several km trip are:
1. Check the oil level and the color of the oil in the transmission. The
oil in the transmission should be the color of automatic transmission fluid.
Who changed it or added to it last? Was Mobil 1 or another brand of ATF
used? Is oil leaking around the transmission? Have you noticed any
difference in the way the car shifts?
2. Check the oil level in the steering pump.
3. Listen under the car and under the hood to try and pinpoint the noise.
When you jack up the car to listen to the transmission, be sure and use a
good quality jack on a firm surface and block the wheels with the emergency
brake on.

Others on the list will have more suggestions after you report back.
Good luck,
Gerry Archer

 Hi there folks
My 1985 300TD 5-spd manual developed a harsh metallic growl yesterday.
It growls when the engine is running, with the clutch (unfamiliar to
most of you, I guess) out and the gearbox in neutral (of course).
Happened all of a sudden, and is most audible (read, very audible) at
 idle.

Doesn't sound to me as though the growl originates in the gearbox
anywhere near the cabin. Sounds much further forward than that, well
 into the engine bay.

 Any ideas?

Cheers, and Happy (growl-free) Christmas to you all.

Those are great stump pullers. Put it in first (normally start in

that chain as I haven't yet felt any resistance from the tree uprooting.
Turned out I'd pulled the (admittedly not very big) dead tree five

I think 1956 is still a non-synchro transmission. Might want to hold

The Corolla is just the thing for a girl's first car and there are plenty of

As far as I know all 404 Unimogs are synchro gearboxes. In any case I
would be surprised if the trans hasnt been replaced in which case it
would have any upgrades.

This is however a early french 404, no real meaning in that other than
it probably tuns a little quicker due to the shorter wheelbase and
there are some other nitpicky differences like the wooden bedsides,
different hood latches, etc. It also has the nifty safari windshield
that tilts out at the bottom for ventilation.

What's with abbreviations only for the important words?

If you are going to take the time to do all the other stuff
you might as well do the LCA bushings too.

 You might need to
find an indy to help with the ball joints, though some report
having done them with the autoparts store rental bj presses.

I have, but I spoke with Rusty on the phone today and his
thoughts were that the U/L control arms and brake track rod
can be done withOUT using a (and only THE) spring compressor.

So why is it that an abbreviation gets used for the focal point
of the sentence? All the other words are fully spelled out, but
not the most important one - the core reason for the sentence.

Why not:

f yu going d all tos do t lower control arm bushings too.

or

Ih, I sw Rusty otp td his thoughts wtt upper and lower control arms a brake
track rod cbd without t spring compressor

At least then if I misinterpret the abbreviation, it's for one
of the filler words. I can still glean the useful data out of
the sentence. But if I can't figure out what U/LCA BTR mean -
it's useless.

Re: [MBZ] Keeping Warm!

2007-12-20 Thread Fmiser
 Somehow I thought
editing a 2 hour dance showcase would be a bit less
boring. This is brutal, I've been at it all day and I've still
got 5 dances left to go.

 -Curt

Dance recitals, piano recitals, etc. are _tough_ editing!!

I've got one that's going to be particularly rough. I have two
tapes. One from a camera that was not run continuously, and
the other from a camera that occasionally had major video
garbage (not a tape problem - video CCD chip amp in the camera
is dieing)

And it's for a friend...

Re: [MBZ] copper thieves

2007-12-20 Thread Fmiser
IIRC there was a large traffic jamming upgrade made to one of
our usually clogged highways here in seattle. Took a few days
to put down a few miles of copper stuff and buckle up the
roadway. A few days latter some person decided to rent a
digger machine and remove said copper, causing the state to
once more block up traffic and install some more copper.

Wish the idiots would go after live wires

 clay

They have.

My local electric coop has reported that a number of people have
been killed by messing with live, high-voltage lines and live
sub-stations.

Hey, it's cheaper than shooting them. And you don't have to catch
them in the act, you only need to find the bodies and have them
removed before they stink too much. Seems like a win-win to me.

Re: [MBZ] rant - was: 123 frontend rebuild

You need a nice single malt, pour a wee dram and sip it slowly while
staring at the fire. I would suggest a Dalwhinnie or Balvenie Double
Wood if you are wound up, a Lagavulin 16 if you are feeling a bit more
mellow. Repeat as needed.

But to answer your question, when those words are repeated over and
over, at some point it becomes redundant to write them out.

 ** Caution - rant ahead **

What's with abbreviations only for the important words?

If you are going to take the time to do all the other stuff
you might as well do the LCA bushings too.

 You might need to
find an indy to help with the ball joints, though some report
having done them with the autoparts store rental bj presses.

I have, but I spoke with Rusty on the phone today and his
thoughts were that the U/L control arms and brake track rod
can be done withOUT using a (and only THE) spring compressor.

Hey didn't some incident like that in Paris suburbs spark Muslim
outrage a few months back, in addition to sparking a coupla Muslim yutes?

I don't mean that to be a political statement -- everybody got all up
about a coupla guys who were doing something in a power substation,
reportedly running from the cops, but it looked like the cops found them
trying to steal copper from the substation, they ran and got a taste of
old sparkie, and then the rioting started.
