Hi Diana,
EBay has changed its rules and the sellers on this group are upset. You
might want to check out the new rules before you sell anything important

I asked about doing that many years ago because I always did it with
gasser's. Someone on the old list warned that the oil could act as fuel and
a combustion could occur. I decided to follow that advice so I still don't
know. Is it a common practice with diesels?

Thanks

The difference could indeed tell someone something. But perhaps
not me. I've just heard/read that a compression test is only
meaningful when hot. I interpret that to say that while it can
pass when cold, 'failing' when cold isn't failure. You could
have a gunky valve that's not sealing when cold, etc. Standard

Re: [MBZ] '87 300D saga

2008-05-29 Thread Peter Frederick
You have a blown head gasket. Replace it before you hydrolock #1 and
bend the rods.

Did you torque the delivery valves correctly?

Did you check the chain for stretch? You need to, it's probably 4
degrees or more "long" and will give you all the late injection
problems.

You will need to carefully inspect the head when it's off -- look for
cracks around the valves and prechamber. However, cracks are usually
obvious, and almost always blow into the coolant, so if there is no
oil in there and no cold pressure, the head is good. The gasket is
shot -- they typically leak between #3 and #4 and out #1 into the oil
passage across the front and into the bolt holes on #6.

Compression isn't great, but it's not terrible either, should start
right up.

Check that you do get voltage on the glow plugs -- relays have been
known to fail.

The head gasket isn't bad on that car if you have a lift. Wire tie
the cam sproket to the chain, remove intake and associated stuff,
pull the pins for the top chain guide, drain coolant, remove line for
the turbo oil feed from the side of the block, and pull cam sproket
and head bolts.

You will need a set of new head bolts, they are "stretch" bolts and I
would NOT re-use them, you are only asking for doing the job again.

Test the nozzles while you are at it.

If you have significant blowby, do the valves too if you have the $$
-- you may end up with a nearly new engine. Mine looked new except
for the cracked head at 275,000.

Was there a chunk of soot in the shraeder valve?
I'd definitely retest that cylinder, since the gauge was working
fine for the later cylinders. I bet Kleb is right and you've got
a head gasket problem, right up front where it's common to fail.

Test it again hot. Cold compression tests aren't necessarily
indicative of the true state of things.

Re: [MBZ] Parkersburg IA tornado pics - and a long soapbox rant

2008-05-29 Thread Bill R
Your comments are right on. People do want to help, and in my opinion much
of my job was trying to put faces and personal stories to the headlines and
lesser known situations around the world. My frustration is that often
'wanting to help' means cleaning out the junk in the closet and garage and
sending it to someone who doesn't need it, can't use it, costs more to ship
than it is worth, or which harms the locals more than it helps. People then
feel like something good has been done for those in need. There is no other
way to say it - cash is the biggest help. Just do your homework and send it
to a decent charity that is careful about overhead and how it helps folks.
http://charitynavigator.org is one site that can help with that. The
accepted rule is 35% max overhead, but personally I'd stick to around 20%
overhead before I am willing to contribute. One of my friends heard a
director of an international aid group who thought it helpful that the
people they sent didn't speak the language as that would stop them from
being influenced by the locals. Absurd. Your church is the largest of the
36 denominations that make up Church World Service [Gee - you helped pay my
salary!] The horror stories have not come from your giving through your
church, especially that part that went to CWS. Just about all of our foreign
staff are native to the countries we work in and have the contacts and
background to know what people need and how to get assistance where it is
needed. That matters. During the days Afghanistan was controlled by the
Taliban CWS had schools for girls and Taliban approved health clinics for
women because our staff were locals and not an 'outside' group coming in.
As far as overhead let's start from the other end of things: if you
want almost zero overhead drive to a poor area and hand your money to
someone who looks like they need it. Overhead is the cost of fuel. If you
want people who have spent their lives working to help others and who have
college loans to pay off and kids to feed then some reasonable salaries are
to be expected. Expertise costs - but not as much as trying to get the job
done with untrained help. I'd mention Iraq as an example of that. The half
million $ salaries and fancy parties that some organizations are known for
don't happen in the responsible ones. One of the things I appreciated
about my organization was how flat the salary ranges were. Our regional
director made a bit more than I did, and the director of our international
organization [based in New York] made less than twice what I did. It is
still expensive to have an organization that covers most of the globe,
though. BTW, the lowest overhead is still the nuns who do charity work, of
course. Can't beat them at that.
Those flood relief kits are probably designed from a CWS kit
brochure - and we send kits all over the world [but not the ones with the
mops...], and the donor is paying for the shipping. I have been in some
pretty backwater places and seen health and personal kits stockpiled for
emergencies. Honestly, a lot of what it does is let people have a 'hands
on' experience that is important to them. Disaster / flood relief cleanup
kits are difficult and expensive to ship, and with most of the kits there is
a note that says what the value of the kit is and gives an option to send
that $ instead so supplies can be purchased locally.
Obviously a topic I could go on about for some time, but probably
already enough for this forum.

On a more serious note, I think that when a disaster hits (anywhere) folks
want to help but simply don't know how to. Some of the issues you mentioned
are nothing more than the result of well intentioned groups and individuals
grasping at straws to do *something*.

You mentioned having a garage sale and sending money. But to whom do you
send the money? Some are reluctant to send money because it is unknown
(unless one takes the time to do the research) how much of that money
actually gets to those in need and how much is siphoned off as overhead.

Sending stuff, even the wrong stuff, is just a gut reaction to a feeling of
helplessness on the part of the well-meaning. It isn't that we don't CARE
(pun intended) -- we want to SAVE THE CHILDREN.

Our local church as been assembling flood relief kits (it must be a
Methodist thing -- deathly afraid of water at the time of baptism (use the
minimum wetness possible) and that carries through even to social and
charitable projects) and I swear that half of the stuff included would be
worthless to someone who is suddenly homeless and jobless.

[MBZ] '87 300D saga

2008-05-29 Thread OK Don
This is about the 300D that my son bought (cheap - Kaleb prices) with
a crunched fender (fixed now). It blows white smoke until it's about
warmed up, misses about every second when idling, and Kaleb says (he
was PO twice removed) that it needs a head gasket.
It is also hard to start sometimes - acts like an air leak in a Diesel
line. We replaces all the rubber hoses under the hood (some were
original), and routed the lines properly (supply and return lines were
reversed, as were the lines to the fuel pre-heater). Still had a leak.
There was always standing fuel on top of the IP, so we pulled the
manifold today, and replaced the o-rings around the delivery valves.
Since we were there, we pulled all the glow plugs (all measured 1.1
Ohms), bought a Diesel compression tester at Harbor Freight, and
measured the compression (very cold engine, not started for a week).
The results were:
#1 - 200psi
#2 - 360psi
#3 - hit 160, then back to zero before the next compression stroke
#4 - 360psi
#5 - 360psi
#6 - 360psi
So - what to do next? Look for another head (this is a #14, bit no
pressure in the top radiator hose), look for another engine, buy a
head gasket set from Rusty, pull the head and see what we find?

Kaleb - what do you have to sell/trade? want a 240D for the SDL?

Re: [MBZ] Parkersburg IA tornado pics - and a long soapbox rant

2008-05-29 Thread Bill R
Yes, I'm sure the Andrew stories being so widespread and long lived had some
influence by being in Florida, but neither Homestead nor Florida City are
tourist areas. People going to the Keys drive by on the Turnpike, but don't
often stop or go into those cities. Another part of it was how wide a swath
[at times 100 miles or more wide] and relatively slow moving a hurricane is
- a few days at least knowing it might be coming then it veered away from
the central part of Miami and hit the un-prepared and un-warned agricultural
and immigrant communities and a few raisin farms [those are retirement
communities for the uninitiated]. The devastation cost the communities
about a third of their population [IIRC] - many people just couldn't get
over the memories and moved North right into the path of the four that hit a
few years later. While the frozen dinners left on the side of the road and
the piles of blankets and used sweaters and winter coats and mittens donated
to help out in Homestead in the 90+ degree heat of August might have been
sent with good intentions - even the fur stole someone sent, but for some
reason a person who has just lost there home doesn't have a used t-shirt as
a priority item. I mention losing a home both literally and figuratively as
some lifelong residents could not find the land their homes had been on with
no street signs, trees or buildings left standing or recognizable for a
mile. I did work to get some stuff there myself. The county AIDS
coordinating council I was a member of sent two cases of condoms, and my
congregation send a load of food and feminine products. These were needed by
a local family planning center and not available locally if folks still had
transportation, and we knew enough people in the area so that we could meet
unmet needs away from the aid centers.

SOAPBOX RANT TIME: When there is a disaster and you want to help, gather
everything anyone wants to donate and have a garage sale and send the money.
The world has never had a disaster [in so far as our records show] that
there was not enough food in the larger area to feed people. The problem is
that the people can't afford to buy the food. The main effect of dumping
our excess commodities is to help our farmers [not a bad thing in itself]
and our shippers [also not a bad thing in itself] and put the local farmers
and food sellers out of business. Ditto with clothing - imagine trying to
run a clothing shop or factory when a truck comes through on a regular basis
and gives free clothes to anyone. Fine for during the immediate aftermath
of a disaster [sometimes], but it destroys local economies and makes things
worse when public focus moves elsewhere. Many charities will buy food and
supplies locally [and if they don't do not send them your money or your
goods]. Support those that do. I did fund raising for international and
national hunger for Church World Service for 11 years. I've been to some of
the disaster areas and know some of the people who do the work and have seen
it in action. It works far better than the 600 - 1000 cargo containers that
sat on the docks in Honduras for months after the hurricane induced
mudslides there. The sad thing is that in addition to the fact that it would
have required every social service worker in the country to stop their aid
work and come to the docks to unload those containers, was that so much of
it was simply inappropriate or actually cost much needed money to bury or
burn. Images of a football sized field of soggy clothing and other items
being buried by bulldozers do stick in the brain [happened in West Central
Florida]. The organization I worked for sent a memo about the @ $4 Million
needed to dispose of just-outdated medical supplies that some US
pharmaceutical companies got tax write-offs for sending to Bosnia when they
were in the news.
OK... I'll stop my rant now. Some things I just really do care about, and
'aid' that isn't, or only helps the giver, is one of them.

Church World Service

Re: [MBZ] Parkersburg IA tornado pics

2008-05-29 Thread LWB250
In the mid 80s we had a tornado pass just south of the
house in Greenwood, IN. You could hear it from the
house, but it was so dark outside you couldn't see
anything. We didn't have a basement, so we hunkered
down in the corner of the house and covered ourselves
with some heavy blankets.

The devastation was similar to what you described
below - it was like a giant lawn mower or bulldozer
went through. The rolling hills south of us, around
Martinsville, IN, had this neat path about 100 feet
wide just wandering over the hills and fields. Stuff
on either side appeared untouched.

Nasty stuff, tornadoes.

Replace subframe mounts (four), differential mounts (one two piece up
front, two that press into the subframe), and all the links in the
rear suspension except the spring (control arm) link -- it gets new
bushings inner and outer.

You will think you have a new car.

Rusty used to sell a complete set of links and bushings at a decent
discount, I think.

I need to do this to the "new" 300D -- I was half way through it on
the old one.

Re: [MBZ] Parkersburg IA tornado pics

2008-05-29 Thread Rich Thomas
About 1974 a huge tornado blew about 30mi through Indiana, went through
a little town called Monticello and picked up 2 spans of a steel truss
bridge, lifted them INTACT and dropped them in the river about 200yd
away. Lot of the town destroyed. I was in college in W. Lafayette, and
in the flying club. Was out at the little airport washing/waxing a
plane, when my buddy and I noticed it was getting really weird outside
-- yellow sky, hot/humid, no bugs buzzing, no birds to be seen, the
airport dogs were digging in, hairs on our arms standing up, everyone
had left and forgot to tell us to go home or get underground. Se we
decided to leave, got about halfway back to campus (maybe 8 miles),
black as night, when it hit, could not see the hood of the car it was
raining so hard. I pulled over to what I thought was the side of the
road to make sure I did not get rear-ended or something, we rode it out
(ride was the word too) for a few minutes til it passed and sun came out.

Got back to campus, tornado had lifted off the ground just before 2 8-
or 10-story dorms and went over them, then back down to ground. Lot of
guys in the dorm were watching it, too dumb I guess to go to the
basement, and were amazed it did that. Heard about what else it did
later on the news, was like Armageddon around there. My buddy and I
realized too that we were not too smart (and that is really something
when you are 20 yr old!), could have been slung about in the car like a
foam cup. We figured we had been real close to where it went but it was
raining so hard we could not see or hear.

A couple of days later we took the plane up and flew the whole path of
the tornado. Looked like a D1100 (that would be a real big one) Cat had
plowed about 30miles of farmland, town, woods, bridges, anything else.
It was incredible. Did not have a good camera at the time (or video!),
that would have been something to have. In some places you could see
where it went between a barn and house, maybe 100 ft, leaving the
furrow, but nothing hurt. In other places, houses and barns just
exploded but a tree sitting there OK. There was debris over about 100
sqmi, junk everywhere -- cars, trucks, tractors, building bits, trees,
lotsa mobile homes. Saw a couple of 2x4s stuck through phone poles like
a skewer through a mushroom. We flew low and slow for an hour or two,
finally came back and just said, "ohshit." Talk about humility.

I've been near a couple other small ones, but nothing like that. Now I
have hurricanes to worry about, not sure which is worse.

Re: [MBZ] Doors, was: Home made Differential and (transmission?) jack

2008-05-29 Thread R A Bennell
In your experience, how uniform are the doors and hinges? IE - if one is taking
off and then reinstalling the same
door in the same spot, then marking the hinge placement by scratching around
the outside of them probably makes a
lot of sense. Doing so for another door may not be perfect but should get one
close to a reasonable fit if the
doors and hinges are reasonably uniform from the factory.

If the bolts are not terribly rusty, you want about a 12" handle on
the wrench. They should come right out. Rust changes
everything. As for bolting on a door, you should be able to get it
fairly close. You WILL need help. Put in all the bolts loosely,
then try to align them where the old bolts were. Snug the bolts, but
don't tighten. try closing the door gently and see where you
are. Make adjustments as needed. Tighten the bolts when you have it
where you want the door.

You may want to leave final alignment to the paint shop.

Re: [MBZ] Doors, was: Home made Differential and (transmission?) jack

2008-05-29 Thread Loren Faeth
If the bolts are not terribly rusty, you want about a 12" handle on
the wrench. They should come right out. Rust changes
everything. As for bolting on a door, you should be able to get it
fairly close. You WILL need help. Put in all the bolts loosely,
then try to align them where the old bolts were. Snug the bolts, but
don't tighten. try closing the door gently and see where you
are. Make adjustments as needed. Tighten the bolts when you have it
where you want the door.

You may want to leave final alignment to the paint shop.

2008-05-29 Thread Loren Faeth
That is exactly what I said. The difference is that we heard about
Homestead for years in the media, because it was
Florida. Parkersburg won't be heard outside of Iowa after this weekend.

When I was in college one of my favorite professors lived in Jordan
Iowa, which was destroyed by the last F5 to land in Iowa, 32 years
ago. Jordan was not much of a town, but the damage was
unbelievable. I saw that firsthand. Fortunately, there were no
lives lost in that one, and it was hard to believe everyone lived
through it. The stories that are coming out of Parkersburg are really wild.

Take pictures and/or video as you go deeper into the dash. I did the one on
my 79 about 5 years ago and have been rewarded with a leak free AC system ever
since. Still has R-12 in it! The evaporator had started to disintegrate due
to dirt and moisture build up and was about 1/3 (dare I say) occluded.

Just a note for all you want to avoid this task. Keep the area in the
passenger's foot well scrupulously clean to avoid lint and trash from being
sucked
up and collected by the evaporator when on recirc. Also, don't park under
dirty trees. They will crud up your AC system from the fresh air side--I don;t
care if your screen is intact, stuff just gets through there! You will be
amazed at what can get through the blower!

I actually drove my car for about a week, with the dash removed, while
waiting for parts to come in. Just had to plug the mechanical oil pressure
line and
a couple vacuum lines.

Care to give us the shopping list if you have time, Wilton? I'm
assuming some heater hoses, some clamps, the evaporator itself, and
all the climate control vacuum pods... what else are you replacing

Re: [MBZ] Home made Differential and (transmission?) jack

2008-05-29 Thread R A Bennell
Sort of depends what it comes out of. The 5 speed in my 4Runner is heavy as the
transfer case is attached. I know
it was not easy to drag out from under the truck after I had it down. Had to
slide it off of the jack in order to
have enough clearance, then drag it out from under in order to clean up the
bellhousing etc. Two of us lift it OK
to move it about the garage but I wouldn't be able to do it by myself. Have had
it out 3 times for the clutch.
First one wore out. Second was a factory dud. Should have gone with original
equipment parts as still not happy
with the 2nd version of the aftermarket unit. Then put the Toyota parts in last
fall. Have not driven it since so
no idea if this is the one true fix or not.

you might consider changing the

This is a "differential jack" I made in about 20 minutes using 4 old office
chair casters, an old scissors jack, 2" by 12" by 14" pine for base, piece
of 5/8" plywood to set diff on, a piece of 1" by 3/16" steel bar, 5 1/4" FH
bolts, and fender washers to fit. The bar steel was bent to fit the the
differential at about its balance point. The diff could then be rotated,
tilted, and raised up and down as needed. It worked pretty well.
With a different size piece of plywood on top and another steel bar bent
appropriately, it could possibly be used as a transmission jack as well.

This sort of rig might not be necessary for younger fellows who can easily
muscle a diff or transmission around underneath a car, but it came in handy
for this old guy who tires more easily than he used
to. (g)

The operative phrase here is "old office chair casters".
I wouldn't bother with the crappy plastic ones on a lot of
newer chairs, even though four of them could probably hold up
a differential.

[MBZ] Home made Differential and (transmission?) jack

2008-05-29 Thread archer

This sort of rig might not be necessary for younger fellows who can easily
muscle a diff or transmission around underneath a car, but it came in handy
for this old guy who tires more easily than he used
to. (g)

[MBZ] Bad reinstallation disk

2008-05-29 Thread Archer
Dell sent the wrong reinstallation disk with a computer I've had for 3 years.
I just received the correct WinXP disk from them and halfway through
reinstallation the disk stopped loading on a blank screen. Now the computer
will not boot at all. The disk was in the middle of loading the OS when it
stopped. I'm guessing that the OS is still on the HD but nothing I've tried to
load it has worked. Does anyone know of a program that might salvage it? All
suggestions greatly appreciated.
