Marshall said the transmission in my '83 300D would soon have to be replaced
after I told him what it was doing. He said Mobil 1 ATF "might" help it but
he doubted it. That was in 2000. I put Mobil 1 ATF it it then and have
driven it 95,000 miles since. It seems to gradually get better all the
time.
Either then or later Marshall routinely used it in his cars and recommended
it to everyone IIRC.

I did not see the Service CD's listed on the site. Your best bet would be to
call MBUSA Classic Center @ 1-866-MBCLASSIC (622-5277). I bought my W123

Marshall endorsed all Mobil 1 products AFAIR, however if he was hesitant to
endorse the ATF on occasion it was probably because some people promoted M1
ATF as a miracle cure-all (many inquiries about it come from people with
tranny performance problems and M1 is a help, not a fix).

Also I have seen some discussion about higher-mileage transmissions
developing loud clunks/clanks on downshift, after being switched to M1. I
had that experience, and it was disturbingly LOUD (on 3-2). I recently
switched back to regular Dex III after having the kickdown cable replaced,
and the clanks quieted down in about three months.

If you were used to the turbo assist for highway merging and passing you
will have to lower your expectations in that department.

That old climate control system really has nothing going for it. Both the
servo and the pushbutton panel are substandard pieces of work and while you
can pick up the pushbutton panels pretty cheap used, the servo is another
story

I've had two VW beetles, one with a 1500 & one with a 1600 engine. Both got
25 MPG with mixed driving.

A Mercedes diesel that literally weighs twice as much is doing good to get
about the same!

The two times I have had MBz diesels for sale (one 300sd, one 240d), both
times about fifty percent of people who inquire are horrified when they hear
the cars are 'only' good for under 30 mpg.

"But VWs get way better than that!"

The concept that a Benz is slightly larger and heavier than a VW does not
seem to penetrate the grey matter at all.

Yeah I get the same reaction when I tell people that I get around 25
MPG, maybe a little better on the highway.

Sorry a 1.8 liter VW diesel is not the same as a 3 liter Mercedes
diesel in a car that probably has twice as much steel in the chassis.

If the engine is running, that thing has to be turning.
You can discern how the check valves are supposed to be
in just by thinking about how the pump has to work.
And you can test it by stepping on it with the roller
against a board. Mine 'honked' as the vacuum check valves
did their thing.

Run away... The MPG is clearly a lie, and why would you go through
the effort to replace the AC compressor and then not charge it. The
AC doesn't work, or won't hold a charge, is why.

Re: [MBZ] 300SD Vac Pump Rebuild does not suck

2008-07-07 Thread Allan Streib
If yours is like mine, one of the three check valves (the one by
itself) is inverted compared to the other two. You'll notice that the
pump cover has a recess over that valve to accomodate it being "upside
down" compared to the others.

I made exactly the same mistake assembling mine. I put all three
valves in the same way. I should have, but did not, notice which way
they were oriented when I took the pump apart. But on my first
attempt, I put it all back together, and NO vacuum. I was able to
remove the cover and flip that one valve over without entirely
removing the pump, though getting the convoluted "o-ring" that seals
the cover back in place with the pump body on the car was a bit
touchy. I had perfect vacuum after that.

Oh, one other thing, I am wondering if the cam thingie on the engine is
actually turning and driving the pump. I would guess it is if it is
developing a bit of vac, the cam thingie looks to be driven off the
timing chain or crankshaft somehow? Not sure what could break there
that would not be catastrophic.

Re: [MBZ] OT biofuels impact on food prices much higher than previously reported.

2008-07-07 Thread Curt Raymond
Biofuels didn't create a food crisis. Abnormally low food prices created an
underclass of people who could only barely survive at those insanely low
prices. The price of corn hadn't risen squat in 50 years.
Now demand for biofuels has made food prices rise to somewhere near (but
probably still below) what they should be so that underclass can't afford to
exist.

Biofuels didn't create the problem, decades of stupid agriculture did. Biofuels
may have aggrevated the issue or brought it up sooner rather than later but
we'd have gotten here no matter what...

I'll know theres a real fuel crisis when somebody asks to rent my fields. Half
of northern Maine is fallow, New Brunswick is the same way. In Massachusetts
farmland is converted to houses. Does it make more sense to burn our food or
live ontop of it?

I think this is pretty much common sense and shows the foolishness of
using food crops as a fuel source.

biofuels, i think.

i think he is saying that mpg isn't a consideration on a car you really
wouldn't drive. on a driveable car, thought, it's very important. his car
isn't a driver though, so it doesn't matter.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Jeremy Hart out on bail?

2008-07-07 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I guess until the flakes decide he is fit to raise them again. They are
doing good out there, its just matter of if his parents decide to give
them back to jeremy or not. I dont think they will assuming he somehow
gets off, but then again, I didnt think they would be bailing h im out
of jail either. In fact, that was part of the deal with us taking the
kids, they were not going to be bailing him out or supporting him etc.
Well that changed so it was time to change something here. Kind of hard
to take care of somebody elses kids when the grandparents are too
worried about their murdering son. 3 really screwed up kids is just too
much to deal with when A, the grandparents are now in support of the
father, B, you cant get the kids to do a damn thing they are supposed to
even when they know the rules etc but choose to break them, and C, when
you have a baby of your own on the way. Something had to give and that
was it. Also not to mention the fact that our 2 kids starting failing
school because of all the problems this has caused. Was good to get
them out of the initial bad situation but there was just so much we
could do.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Jeremy Hart out on bail?

Kids are in california. It was time for them to go about the time his
parents decided to start trying to bail him out. Already have enough
problems as it is without that mess.

Re: [MBZ] MORE on AT fluids

2008-07-07 Thread Peter Frederick
Type F fluid went out of usage (by Ford or anyone else) about 20
years ago, or longer.

The difference is in the friction modifiers, the only real result of
switching them was firmer shifts with Type F.

Mobil 1 (or any other full synthetic) ATF is vastly better, and what
I use.

[MBZ] MORE on AT fluids

2008-07-07 Thread R A Bennell
I just changed the AT fluid in my F150 and note that the dipstick says to use
Mercon V. I had to look around to
find fluid that said it was rated that way and it appears that means it is
synthetic fluid. I am assuming that

Mercon and Dexron are essentially the

Re: [MBZ] OT biofuels impact on food prices much higher than previously reported.

2008-07-07 Thread Christopher McCann
I wonder if land has been taken out of the Crop Reserve Program? If not, that
is part of the problem. I know the claim is that this is often marginal land
that should not be under cultivation. Well, the marginal land can grow crops
that do not cause much erosion (NOT CORN), like jatropha. And the non marginal
land can grow whatever.

Fact of the matter is that the prices of ALL commodities are going up. Are we
making ethanol and biodiesel out of steel, copper and aluminum? No. The problem
with food price is much deeper than biofuels. The current economic problem
gives big oil the opportunity to blame biofuels.

In the end, it will all be algae and there will still be high food prices.

Re: [MBZ] OT Ford Question/ignition misfire

2008-07-07 Thread R A Bennell
You are absolutely right. The cylinders are 1 through 4 on the passenger side
and 5 through 8 on the driver's side,
front to back.

So far, I have changed out the front 3 on the p side and the front 2 on the d
side. None of those were too hard to
do. 7 and 8 don't look like fun. 4 does not look too bad.

The plugs have been changed before as the ones I am taking out are NGK and not
Motorcraft. They are worn with a gap
of more than 80 thou so it was time to do this. Gap is supposed to be 54 to 56
thou. Apart from that they don't
look too bad and are even so far. Changing the boots too. Some cracked at the
bottom and some normal so maybe some
were changed previously.

Hope it solves my problem. Looking on a Ford forum reveals lots of folks
suffering hesitation etc and not getting a
solution by changing plugs.

Randy

It is the 5.4 with the COP setup. I hear that there is often a leak over #4 but
that would be the back cylinder
on the driver's side of the vehicle. The heater hose apparently often drips
onto that spot if the clamp is not
tight enough. Was looking on a Ford forum last evening. Have not done anything
about it yet - just driving the
300D but need to see if I can have a look tonight. Have a scan tool so will
see what it says first. Should buy a
set of plugs at the very least and install them anyway - but I hear that is
not a fun job - especially the first
time one does it.Randy-Original Message- From: [EMAIL

You didn't say which engine, but
assuming the mod V8 with coil on plug, we found signs of standing water in

water to that cylinder.? Anyway,
the crud buildup from evaporating the water was fouling that plug.? this was

I should have said '72 220D

Not MY '72 220D! During the 5 years I've been scanning Craigslist Portland,
I've seen 3 '72 220D's come up, one with a totally trashed/taken apart
interior and dash, one that was hit in the driver's side, and one for $4400
that was roadworthy and partially restored. There have been a couple '69's,
a couple of '70's, a '71, and a '73 as well. I won't be in the market for
one for a while since we haven't any parking spots for what we have right
now. The '83 300SD doesn't get driven at all, so I'm thinking of selling
it. Yes, Jim C, that's right!

Outlook isn't the limiting factor... it is your ISP. Usually they have
a couple of megabytes as the limit, which should be plenty of room for
all of the text based messages on this list.

When you use webmail to check your email does it already have everything
that is on your computer or is it just the new emails you've received?
If it mirrors your inbox, deleting in webmail will delete in your inbox.
If it is just new email, deleting in webmail will prevent it from
being downloaded to you computer.

Worst case is you can always go to digest while on your vacation. What
part of Illinois are you going to?

Switch to digest, and set your traveling computer to "download new messages

I would guess that you have your home machine set to delete messages off
your mail server once you download them to that machine. If you leave
that machine (or Outlook) running you will need to set it to leave msgs
on the server if you want to be able to see them while you are
traveling. Or shut your home machine (or Outlook) off and it won't be
getting the msgs at all, and you can read/delete/leave your msgs on the
server until you get home and turn that machine back on (or Outlook back
on) and then it will get everything off the server that is there.

Gary,

An earlier auction did not meet the Reserve. Reserve has been
reduced. As to gas crunch, etc., IMHO, if you want this kind of
classic, MPG is not a consideration. Besides, it ain't a daily
driver.

I haven't seen it, but been told it in VG condition As

Take care,

[MBZ] 1978 300D

2008-07-07 Thread Donald Snook
I found a 1978 300D here in Wichita cheap. It has working a/c. so, I may buy it
before someone snatches it up. It only has 175,000 miles. I am trying to get
pics of the interior or schedule a time to go see it this evening.

I don't know anything about the 300D that early. I had two 123's diesels, but
they were 82, 83. Both were turbo. Anything special I should look for on this
one?

Is the mileage a little worse on the non-turbo since you have to have your foot
in it all the time? Should I expect 24-26 on the highway? (that is what I got
in my 123's). Any other information would be great.

Thanks,

Donald H. Snook

Re: [MBZ] O.T. But List Related for Kaleb

2008-07-07 Thread Rich Thomas
I would guess that you have your home machine set to delete messages off
your mail server once you download them to that machine. If you leave
that machine (or Outlook) running you will need to set it to leave msgs
on the server if you want to be able to see them while you are
traveling. Or shut your home machine (or Outlook) off and it won't be
getting the msgs at all, and you can read/delete/leave your msgs on the
server until you get home and turn that machine back on (or Outlook back
on) and then it will get everything off the server that is there.

Thx for the link to the photos - didn't the Parade have some
functions/visits to Biltmore? Awesome Plantation -

I wish I could have made it also - maybe next yext - at least I have a
shorter drive than you - Va to NC would have been a 3-4 hr trip.
Yours woud've been considerably longer.

Perhaps I can make Parade 09 -

When you use webmail to check your email does it already have everything
that is on your computer or is it just the new emails you've received?
If it mirrors your inbox, deleting in webmail will delete in your inbox.
If it is just new email, deleting in webmail will prevent it from
being downloaded to you computer.

Never having this happen before, is this a clutch that has failed or does it

That is close to how I felt about mine, except mine was a Euro model. It was
not a CE, but an E. I don't know if mine was a US Spec, but it was a M110. It
was not underpowered for me, but it was certainly thirsty. I hated the Euro
seats (with the cloth because it was very rough on the legs if you had shorts
on). I did like the way it drove. It had a very tight suspension. Mine was a
1983 with 150,000 miles on it. I guess the only real complaint was how bad the
fuel mileage was.

I like the looks of the CE better.

experience. We were with some of my relatives in St. Simon's Island, Georgia
this past week and my brother in law's little SUV suddenly started making an
awful racket and smelling VERY bad. So, for a day we tried not to drive at
all. By July 4, we knew we had to do something. So, I checked to see what
tools he had. He had only a Phillips head screwdriver and somebody else had a
swiss army knife. I searched all over for the blower motor and located it
under the dash/glove box. The evaporator was under behind the glove box and it
said "Evaporator and Blower Motor." While I was searching for tools, my BIL
nearly started taking the evap apart (this vehicle had working A/C, so that
would have been bad). Anyway, after I stopped him, I showed him where the
blower motor was and we removed it. The funny thing was all we needed was the
Phillips head screwdriver. I took the motor/cage out and there was the
problem. A dead mouse. We took it out cleaned the squirrel cage and
everything worked great. We did have some nasty smell for an hour or so, but
we bought some Lysol and sprayed it into the fresh air intake and it cleared it
right up.

Re: [MBZ] OT SC

2008-07-07 Thread LarryT
We lived in Summerville, SC (just outside of C'ton) back in early 80s./
Beautiful people, beautiful country. The people made it a wonderful place to
live.

Then we moved to Greenville - another place of great people.
When I think about it - of the 12-15 cities we've lived in - all have been
full of amazing people!

But I'm glad our moving days are over - when we were young and someone else
was paying for the moving van it was fun - almost like a vacation. Now,
we'll have to move ourselves or pay someone - wouldn;t mind finding some
acres farther west of here - in the mountains of Va.

Need to stay kinda close to see the kids and G-kids -

Re: [MBZ] [Banned] i actually talk car stuff! (shocking, i know)`

2008-07-07 Thread LarryT
Dexron was used mostly in GM which had auto trans that traditionally shiftly
more smoothly - i.e., they slipped the clutches - than the Ford ATs which
shifted more firmly - so the Dex for GM contributed to the smooth shifting
and the Type F contributed to the more firm shifts.

While MB had very firm shifts (I'm only familiar with pre 90s - but I think
they have moved toward more smooth shifting) - which is little to *no*
clutch slipping which produced longer life in their trans. they could use
the Dexron and because the ATs were designed to shift firmly the Dex did
little to contribute to shifting.
