are being repossessed.  With that glut on the market, one should be  
able to find a nice hole in the water into which cash will flow.

The day the boat was purchased, and the day it was SOLD!

Actually, I do have a great time on our 21' 220HP Mercruiser I/O deck boat, 
but I wouldn't buy it if I had to do it all over again.  I would buy a nice, 
used, pre-depreciated model rather than taking the hit myself.
What a shame about your boat motor, Jim!  Are you planning to repower it or 
just give up on it?

Well I have had no experience removing one but plenty of putting them 
back on.
You need to undo the screw and the trim is clipped onto little plastic 
clips, which may well not survive the operation but can be gotten.
Be warned that trim piece can bend, so I would advise using a thin lever 
behind the trim to prize it off one clip at a time.

Warped rotors can be caused by corrosion on the face of the hubs. The
unevenness will translate into inevenness in the rotor.

I decided to replace the pads and rotors on the 2.5T today...  The old 
rotors were pretty thin and there was an occasional shuddering when 
coming to a stop.  Thinking it was a warped rotor and since they were 
thin I just decided to throw parts at it and see what happened.

Anyway, I'm putting one of the rotors on, and it is noticeably warped 
when you spin it on the car.  I tried to mount it again, but still had 
the same problem.  What gives?  I doubt it came warped from Rusty. 
There was still a slight bit of shudder while driving, but I don't know 
for sure because of my idiot story.

Any ideas?

Idiot story:  While on the test drive the brakes started making a 
horrible metal on metal sound...  Turns out I put one of the pads in 
backwards (pad side to piston, backing side to rotor).  So I'm going to 
find out the hard way if the rotor from Rusty was warped seeing as there

are some nice chunks missing out of the one on there now!! :(

Nice lake boat.  In total disgrace because the 850 Merc
engine puked and died the second day into the vacation,

[MBZ] Fuel Mileage Experience, but not Benz

So I sorta absorbed my dad's 98 Caddy DeVille.  Front wheel drive, 
Northstar engine, nice ride, handles pretty well, lots of power, 57k 
miles on the clock.  Just took about a 1000 mile road trip yesterday and 
today in it.  Finally learned to twiddle the computer "Information 
Center" in the car.  Trip info reported 24.9 mpg at avg speed of 69.6mph 
for about a third that distance.  I'll have to check the 500 mi segment 
tomorrow.  This was mostly on relatively flat road, but still...  Most 
of the time I was cruising between 70 and 75, sometimes a bit higher.  
Premium fuel, but I still think that is pretty respectable for a large 
plush 10 yr old luxobarge.  I gotta think that with 10 years of 
automotive progress (well, it is GM, but I think they must have figured 
something out in 10 years) that number could be something like 30 or 
better in a new Caddy.  I don't know what they do these days, but I 
think that is pretty decent for the old ride -- don't the new ones have 
cylinder deactivation and some other tricks?

Observation:  Virginia has become a nanny state.  You cross the border 
from NC to VA on I-95 and there were about 6 signs having to do with 
your speed, aircraft tracking, buckle your seat belts, turn on your 
lights in the rain, radar detectors illegal, and one other I forget, 
might have been something to do with drunk driving, in the first 1/4 
mile.  They need a few more to tell you to clean your plate, wash behind 
your ears, recycle your cans, and not to kick your dog.  It looked like 
a bunch of Burma Shave signs except that they were really annoying not 
funny.  And stupid too.  Oh, and the speed limit dropped from 70 to 65, 
same road, same traffic, same everything, except that it then turned 
into a massive bumper-bumper dodgem as some drivers actually slowed down 
and the trucks started jumping lanes trying to avoid them.  Good idea there.

IIRC, R134 sight glasses have bubbles unless you overcharge.
If you can hold the revs at 3000 and the compressor still runs full time 
without 
the low pressure switch cutting it out, you don't need freon.

I guess there's always the possibility that the expansion valve isn't right or 
the heater isn't fully shut off.

If they're hot, you could pinch one of the hoses with a pair of vise-grips
and some blocks of wood to remove the heat.

conversion.
I didn't check the pipes to the heater core - DUH! -  will do that
next. DO konw the PBU needs work - it cycles between heat-cooling
sometimes, sticks on full cooling sometimes on the way to work at 8AM
- gets VERY cold inside then, though I haven't measured the air temp -
yet.

You must clean off the face of the hub, and clean the back of the  
rotor, too.  Doesn't take much crud to make the rotor appear to be  
warped.

A bit of anti-seize goes a long way toward making it easier to get  
them off the next time, too.

I doubt you got a warped or bent rotor, but I suppose anything can  
happen some time or another!

monovalve, or bad pushbutton unit may be re-heating the air off the  
evaporator.  I put a new temp sensor in for the evaporator and cured  
a freeze-up problem, and now I get proper temp control and compressor  
cycling.

Your initial pressure on the low side was too low, an indication that  
the expansion valve is closed due to low evaporator temp.  If you  
have a block of ice in there because the sensor is bad  and the PBCU  
isn't switching off the compressor, you won't get air flow and won't  
get cooling.

If you don't have foam in the sight glass, you have enough freon in  
there for normal operation, as there is only liquid going to the  
evaporator.

Well, actually I was planning on fixing it(which it could have been) but 
Dan wanted it for the engine for his now sold wagon, so he bought it off 
me and stripped it.  I later got th rolling shell back and finished the 
job.  I still have the doors, bumpers, trunk and hood and misc other 
stuff around here.  Come get the SL and you can see it.   Will even give 
you some free diesel purge

[MBZ] Warped rotor question with bonus "I'm an idiot" story

I decided to replace the pads and rotors on the 2.5T today...  The old 
rotors were pretty thin and there was an occasional shuddering when 
coming to a stop.  Thinking it was a warped rotor and since they were 
thin I just decided to throw parts at it and see what happened.

Anyway, I'm putting one of the rotors on, and it is noticeably warped 
when you spin it on the car.  I tried to mount it again, but still had 
the same problem.  What gives?  I doubt it came warped from Rusty. 
There was still a slight bit of shudder while driving, but I don't know 
for sure because of my idiot story.

Any ideas?

Idiot story:  While on the test drive the brakes started making a 
horrible metal on metal sound...  Turns out I put one of the pads in 
backwards (pad side to piston, backing side to rotor).  So I'm going to 
find out the hard way if the rotor from Rusty was warped seeing as there 
are some nice chunks missing out of the one on there now!! :(

Funny, that Nissan Sentra (something like a 90, perhaps) I had for  
work for a while was pretty good for milage.  Pretty junky when I got  
it, but I routinely got 40 mpg driving it in mixed city/highway to  
and from my external job.  Not a race car by any means, but plenty of  
power for anything I normally do while driving, and decent on ice and  
snow, too.

A bit small -- would be rather tight for a family of four with  
teenagers, but for a couple or a plain transportation car, hard to beat.

And it had a carburetor!  Probably better milage with fuel injection.

Hard to tell which drives what -- advertising or consumer demand.  We  
all tend to want what everyone else has, I guess (although not most  
of us on this list, perhaps), and once the demand cycle starts up,  
profit motive will provide what people "want", even if the "want" was  
created by advertising.

There is absolutely no reason why any automobile gets less than 30  
mpg on the highway -- even a current Buick midsized sedan does that.   
City milage will be lower for non-diesels, but it shouldn't be THAT  
much lower.

Of course, the train gets much better milage than that, too..

You're right they're selling cars people want, but why do people want them? 
Chrysler told them the hemi engine is "better" mostly because its more 
powerful. What can you do with that power the logical man asks? Burn more gas 
is the honest answer... The PT cruiser is rated from a high 21-26 w/4cyl to a 
low 18-24 with a... 4cyl that needs premium. Fueleconomy.gov doesn't say but 
I'd guess thats the turbocharged version.
The Accord is about the same size and is rated for 21-31 (because the engine is 
too big, see my assertion above). You can comfortably sit 5 in an Accord, I 
know, I've done it, no problem.

[MBZ] Help with removal of lower door trim on 123 sedan

cannot send right now.  Please excuse.

I need help from some of you smart people.  I’m trying to remove the plastic 
trim piece on the bottom outside of the driver’s door on my 1983 230E on 123 
chassis for body repair and painting.

I found a plastic nut on the back end of the trim piece under a plug, and can 
see plastic pins pushed through four prong expanding spiders in holes in the 
door skin all along the door (viewed from inside with door panel off).  I can’t 
seem to push the posts back through or loosen the trim piece to amount to 
anything except near the plastic nut.

How does one get the plastic trim off?  Does it survive removal, or does it 
perish?  Inquiring minds want to know.  Thanks in advance for any light shed on 
this.

That was my first guess because I hadn't heard of the 445. Turns out the 445 is 
the new low emissions version of the 345, so I was feeling sorry for you having 
paid over $300 for one of those. $320 is a good price for your 455 Rancher, 
you're better off in my opinion than if you'd paid $350 for a Stihl MS-290 Farm 
Boss.

I recently bought a 50cc Dolmar PS-510. Not quite as much power as your 55cc 
Husky Rancher, but better built. My local dealer gets $318 with tax for the 510.
If I were buying new, I'd pay the extra $80-90 for the PS-5100S, but I got mine 
slightly used with four extra chains for $220 so I'll make do with 3.2 hp and a 
heavy aluminum chassis. (the 5100S makes 3.9hp and is 1/2lb lighter with a 
magnesium chassis) At least my Dolmar isn't a plastic Husqvarna (rimshot).

I missed out by less than two minutes yesterday on buying a Makita DCS-6401 
from 
Amazon.com for $370 (64cc, 4.7hp). It said one left, and while I was partway 
through the checkout process they told me it was sold out. That's a true pro 
quality saw that can kick the snot out of a 55cc Husky, but even $200 off it 
costs more than you paid.

[MBZ] Removing lower door trim 123 sedan - Help!

You may get this twice, once fromthisaddress and once from another.  My 
apologies for any problems this may cause.

I need help from some of you smart people.  I’m trying to remove the plastic 
trim piece on the bottom outside of the driver’s door on my 1983 230E on 123 
chassis for body repair and painting.

I found a plastic nut on the back end of the trim piece under a plug, and can 
see plastic pins pushed through four prong expanding spiders in holes in the 
door skin all along the door (viewed from inside with door panel off).  I can’t 
seem to push the posts back through or loosen the trim piece to amount to 
anything except near the plastic nut.

How does one get the plastic trim off?  Does it survive removal, or does it 
perish?  Inquiring minds want to know.  Thanks in advance for any light shed on 
this.

The saw (which is definately a 455 I checked today) passed the big test with 
flying colors. It pulled through 24" red oak rounds "like buttah". I did learn 
to blip the throttle after coming off a hard cut or it would tend to die. Its 
timed for power not idle...

Kicks the snot out of every other saw I've ever used including dad's big Echo 
which was the best saw I'd used until now. I'm thinking he's got too agressive 
a chain on his. Mine has a less agressive chain with more motor and never runs 
out of power...

Good to hear. I just bought one of the same saws about a month or 6 weeks ago

I know there are other wood heating folks on here so I thought my experience
today might interest some folk.

I've been hauling red oak for firewood for awhile now, a guy from work had
3 big trees taken down but the wood was
still there. Much of it was cut up so I just had to haul and split, last year I
got about 2 1/2 cords. Toward the
end I had to cut which with my little Mac chainsaw wasn't a great
proposition, the Mac is really a limbing saw. I
knew I needed a new saw.
Today I bought a Husky 445 (I think its a 445, its in the garage) 18" bar.
NICE saw, starts right up (it ought to,
its new right?) TONS of power. Big dogs on it to grab into the wood. Throws
nice big chips, plows right through
wood that my little Mac even with a real sharp chain would have to gnaw at
forever.

I went out this afternoon just to "test it out" figured I'd cut a
piece I'd gnawed on with the Mac a couple weeks
ago. Well the Husky blew through that piece and all the other wood I had (maybe
1/3 cord) in about 3 minutes

Tomorrow will be the big test, I'll cut about a cord and haul about 1/3
cord (which is what the pickup will carry.
Then each night after work I'll fill the 190D's trunk and haul a little
more. The place with the wood is right on
my commute so its easy to stop in and grab a couple pieces

Anyway after today's test I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this saw,
its a little big for the average homeowner but
for an avid woodburner its just the ticket, cost me about $320 with a file and
a bottle of Husky mix oil.

No details (where the devil resides), so my guess is that refining
priorities will change, favoring Diesel for use in trains, planes,
trucks, and heating oil (and us).
