Re: [MBZ] OR--leopard borked me

2008-08-25 Thread Redghost
FINALLY!!! I am up and running on the desktop instead of the laptop.
That was a huge PIA!

Tore the thing apart, removed all drives, and found an old one with
panther on it to boot up. Then went to Fry's and got a 320 gig for a
clean disk to install onto. One failing is that I only get access to
128meg on it. Now I need an ultra ATA controller so I can repartition
to full capacity and transfer files over.

Re: [MBZ] Brake rotors

2008-08-25 Thread Wonko the Sane
I have had really good luck with doing a "chat" @ buymbparts with Rusty
before I call, telling him I am about to call (and who I am), and once I am
talking to him on the phone, following his recommendations. Sometimes he
says to "spend the money for top shelf" and other times he will say "less
expensive is just as good." He hasn't steered me wrong yet. I figure he
knows what he is selling and the reputation for each item.

You pull on them to see which one (if any) moves and retracts.
The pedal pulls on one cable that in turn pulls on a yoke in
the middle of the two rear cables. (Think of pulling on the
tail of a Y.) Those pull little cams inside the rear parking
brake shoes, forcing the shoes out to the little drums.
Springs pull them back.

The plastic cable sheaths crack and then water gets in them,
then they rust and don't move any more. The plugs where they
go into the rear brake drum carriers rust too, then it's hard
to get it all apart.

Which way? From the wheels to the spring?

This all started because the parking brake pedal won't retract. It took me
awhile to realize (like an idiot) that the pedal doesn't have its own spring...
Its a PITA to get out and put back...

Assisted the daughter Friday with moving into the university for her senior
year. Of course, had to hit the bookstore.

I was AMAZED (and perhaps I am showing my age here) at how much kids had to
spend for books now.

The first of two students in line in front of me spent in the high $500
level on his, and the next individual spent $695 on hers! And I think these
were used books. A girl in the line beside me returned one book for a class
she had dropped, and was credited $125.

Back when I was attending universities -- the first four years of the 1970s
and then two more in the mid 1980s, it seems that an expensive book was $50,
with most being between $20 and $30 -- especially during the first four
years (1970s).

I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter for the pads.

With alloy wheels you can peek through the wheel and see the
caliper - unless you have those nasty dust cover things in
there. (If so, unmount the wheel, remove the dust cover and
while in there read the name on the caliper).

I recall that one brand has a very prominent circle indentation
on the center of the outer caliper half - quite visible through
the wheel. The other brand doesn't have that circle. I just
don't remember which is ATE and which is Bendix...

They've effectively always been that -- I always bought used textbooks
whenever I could, and sold them back at the end of the semester,
excepting a few that I thought might be useful later in my career
(I've never referenced any of them, in fact).

[MBZ] interesting approach to b2 piston work

2008-08-25 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
The PO of this 190D I am working on said it has a broken b2 band. I
assume he must have pulled the piston out to check. Anyway, after I
dropped the tranny out, I discovered that in order to get to the b2
cover while the trans was in the car, he removed the carpeting on that
side from the inside, cut a hole in the tunnel to make an access port.
AFterwards, covered the hole back up with a piece of aluminum and sealed
it with rtv. Cant tell till you get the tranny out. Interesting. If I
am ever in position to do this job, I may just try this approach.

[MBZ] Brake rotors

2008-08-25 Thread Curt Raymond
Anybody use the PBR brake rotors from Rusty yet? They're half the money of
anything else. I'm putting together my order for my 240D and need all 4 rotors.
This isn't a forever car. If it lasts 2 years I'll be pleased so I'd like to
keep my costs down.

For pads I seem to remember Pagid being the prefered. They're close to the
cheapest.
Rusty's site lists the front pads by caliper manufacturer, is it critical I
know that, like the pads won't fit if I'm wrong? How do I tell, take the wheels
off and look?

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] 1080p LCD Projector

2008-08-25 Thread Smith, Todd
A friend of mine purchased an inexpensive but decent quality DLP
projector and hung it in his basement using a sheet for a screen. Later
on, he purchased a real screen. We watched "Black Hawk Down" and I
flinched a few times as AK rounds whined over my head.

I thought that it was a real as any theater experience and he really
didn't pay too much for it. He started to hang out over at
http://www.avsforum.com/ and was able to find good deals and know what
equipment to buy. It is much like here, lots of experts and lots of
details to know.

That's odd.

I make a point to try to always getting fuel with 10% ethanol
for my petrol cars and my small engines. I've been doing this
for 20 years. I haven't yet had any trouble with any needle
valves and I don't need to clean carburetors very often.

Maybe it's just the newer stuff. My mowers are are rather old.
But my chainsaw is fairly new and the line trimmer is just a
year or two old.

I had to pay some $100 for a course pack about a year ago. It was a
stack of 40 poorly photocopied sheets of paper, some of which were
illegible. It came with a disclaimer that said "to protect the student
and professor, no refunds will will be issued after this course pack
has been opened." They refused to refund my money despite my claim
that the material was illegible, and I didn't feel like going to small
claims court with the campus bookstore

Also, I was able to find free copies of almost all of the content in
the packet online, and at the library.

There has been a migration to requiring "Course Packs". These are
reprints of articles and notes required in addition to the textbooks.
Interestingly, many of them are authored by the professors teaching
the course and come with a hefty copyright fee. Too bad professors
have not heard about the free distribution medium now available called
the Internet.

Re: [MBZ] 1080p LCD Projector

2008-08-25 Thread Rolf
The screens vary in price, I got some material for pretty cheap sans
frame on ebay. I was aiming for a HUGE projection area, I think it was
10ft wide. I built my own projector. It was a worthy experience and we
had some fun summer movies in the carport... Starlight Six drive in is a
few miles away and after I burnt out the first screen the second one had
awful contrast, I decided to keep it to the drive in.

The paint does work ok. I would recommend the fabric over it any day.
There is some unit of measure for reflectivity for those screens and
thats what you want to pay attention to (Can't remember the name).

The biggest problem with the out of the box projectors is the bulbs.
They don't last very long and they are bloody expensive. One of the big
pluses about the DIY projectors is you can pick how much your bulb is
going to cost. The method I went about it was the cheapest route, take
an lcd apart slap it on a old school overhead projector and call it a day.

Google DIY projector and you'll get some good hits.

This is a stretch, but follow the turn light ground wire (brown) to the
point
where it connects to a chassis ground stud where the headlight will most
likely be grounded and examine for corrosion.

There's a ground stud in the back of the car. The taillights are
grounded through their connectors to this stud. Something along
the way is broken, you'll just have to chase it down. A careful
and complete visual examination is called for.

Re: [MBZ] 190D tranny out, now I need a torque converter

2008-08-25 Thread MG
True but that is when done by a good certified operator with a tig or
gas mig welder. No slag and scrupulously cleaned and then I still
wouldn't do it because of the vibrations. When a torque converter with
that kind of problem is rebuilt the complete neck is cut off and a new
one is welded on. You should see the neat computer controlled lathes
they have to spit those things out at the rebuilders.

Inside there is usually a bit of room.

Welds break? Seriously, a good weld should be somewhere very close to

Some friends of Jill's put in a media room and used a can
of Screen Paint (of some brand) to paint a section of wall.
Put a black molding frame around it. Works very well, and
is quite inexpensive when compared to all other approaches.
Much larger than our paltry 80", more like 10'. If the
surface gets damaged, just repair and repaint.

You do have to be able to tolerate a screen that's there
permanently, however. I really enjoy that ours rolls up
so that you don't know it's there except when you're
using it. Much more expensive, though, and the edges
tend to curl in.

Sorry, no. Mine got a plate stuck in it, but the parts were
all still there. I didn't have the testicular fortitude to
actually replace the exhaust manifolds with better ones.
I wanted to. The SL got its smog pump removed, I did use
a big cap nut of some kind to block off the air injection
port. No record of size, though, but it was big.

The 190D did get an EGR-ectomy, but it got heavy round
sheet-metal plates stuck in its craws, clamped down by the
same clamps that hold in the EGR itself.

Take the mating piece in to the well-stocked hardware store?
Around here that would be one of Fasteners Inc., Empire Bolt
and Screw, or Tacoma Screw. They can measure it and find
out exactly what you need.

If the info on Wiki is correct, nobody in the USA is refining or selling 82UL
aviation gasoline. That's a pity, because I think 3 parts 82UL to one part
100LL
would make a nice chain saw fuel with 1/4 the lead content of 100LL. (if 100LL
didn't have 2 grams of lead per gallon, I'd use it in everything but cars)

Aviation fuel lasts for years. I've got to find out if unleaded is available
locally. 100LL (Low Lead is a misnomer here) is nice for stuff that doesn't
have
catalytic converters or O2 sensors. Great for something that must run, but
hardly ever gets used, like my old portable generator.

Seems like oxygenated pump gas oxidizes and decomposes in days, or at best,
weeks.

Mitch.
