I would think something larger like a pillowcase would be better.

As far as moisture goes, it depends on where you live. Here it
would be welcome all winter. My heating system has a 2kW water
boiler in it that can't even begin to keep up. I suspect that
anyplace where a swamp cooler is effective wouldn't have a problem
venting into the house, if the lint were controlled.

Re: [MBZ] OT - cordless screw drivers

2008-09-22 Thread Jim Cathey

Consider the lowly brace, with a hex extension in it. That's
what I used to put the screws in the new deck railing. Just
used it the other day to hang a 42" grab bar from the ceiling
in the laundry room. (Clothes hangers fit it perfectly, and
it looks a lot better than closet rod or water pipe.) Zero
excuse for ever stripping out a head, just like a screwdriver,
but without the wrist fatigue. Does take two hands, but that's
pretty much how I use screwdrivers anyway. (One guiding, one
twisting.)

I hate batteries, and a brace will live forever.

> Li batteries go forever, recharge quickly,

Lithium-ion batteries have a little-known 'feature' where
they lose 20% of capacity per annum, used or not. Just
fine for a cell phone that is unlikely to ever see service
again outside five years, somewhat less desirable in a
laptop that'll probably still be useful then, and even less
so (IMHO) in a tool that might otherwise live for decades
under normal homeowner use.

Re: [MBZ] OT - cordless screw drivers

2008-09-22 Thread Kevin Kraly
I have a Black&Decker 18v Firestorm drill I got for $90 at Home Despot. It
seems to do well with the 3.5" deck screws and anything else I throw at it.
It has a high and low speed as well as variable speed within either gear
proportional to how far you squeeze the trigger. I even used it to fire up
an RC car engine. It came with two batteries that charge up within an hour
or so (at the same time). It may not be the lightest thing out there, but
for something that powerful, it balances well too. It also has a removable
chuck which can be removed along with the drill bit for switching back and
forth between drilling and driving since the driver bit is underneath the
chuck while drilling.

Comcast was throttling BitTorrent traffic, at least in some areas, til
the FCC said that the packet inspection necessary to do that was an
invasion of privacy. Guess they're just limiting bandwidth usage
generically, now.

You must understand that what is seen as trendy in your corner of
Massachusetts might not be universally recognized as trendy elsewhere.

By the way, the "trendy" is in Iowa City (University of Iowa). The Iowa
State (Ames) folks are more like the MIT and Virginia Tech crowd. Special
emphasis on engineering and vet degrees.

Re: [MBZ] OT - cordless screw drivers

2008-09-22 Thread Rich Thomas
Buy one of the Bosch drivers -- I have the one with the tilting head and
the thing is amazing. I own lots of tools, that is about the best
investment I ever made. I think they are about $130 but worth every
penny. Li batteries go forever, recharge quickly, has gobs of torque to
drive multitudes of 3.5" deck screws. Not very heavy, good ergonomics,
powerful, long-lasting. Can you tell I like it?

I am finding that Bosch tools are among the best. I bought a worm drive
saw at Lowes that was a display model for $40, turns out someone took
the brushes from it, so gotta get a set of those. That thing is
amazingly well built though. Also have Bosch Colt router, an excellent
tool.

I guess those Germans know how to build other than Benz parts.

Bill,

It's a 3br/2ba 1150sf ranch, full-time rental, just renovated and listed
with Stockton. We've dropped the price already. It's in the Oak Harbor
Development, off A1A going towards Mayport, right across from B & M Bait
and Tackle. The ICW is about 500 yards down the end of the street, with a
boat ramp in the development. It's right near the Wonderwood Bridge that
avoids all the traffic headed downtown into Jax. 5 minutes from the
Mayport Naval Station's front gate. For someone working at the base, it's
an excellent location. Rumor is they may bring a Nuclear Carrier down from
Norfolk (with about 5,000 jobs) and then I KNOW we'll have it rented. (See
attached file: IMG_4097.JPG)

Since it just changed ownership (From my Father in Law to my wife and I)
We've been cancelled by State Farm and looking for other insurance. (at
about 2X the price). Any leads?

Yeah, our friends in Mayport have several properties in Jax Beach and
Neptune Beach and always have them rented. Maybe uncertainty with the
economy is causing folks to stay put.

As for my trip in June, we were in town for about 48 hours to take care of
everyting with the lawyers, contractors, etc. As far as fishing, going to
Singletons or driving to Saint Augustine for Shrimp at O'Steens, just no
time...

Re: [MBZ] OT - cordless screw drivers

Don - I went to Sam's and got a 19.5 V Hitachi cordless drill with variable
speed. That works well for screws and it also has an adjustable clutch so
you won't over drive them. $39 and change.

I am going to be installing new kitchen cabinets soon, and am thinking
about the number of screws I'll be driving. I don't think me arthritic
wrists are up to job anymore, so am thinking about one of these new
fangled cordless screw driver/drill thingies. My question is, how much
torque, or voltage do I need in a device to drive the appropriate
screws into/through hickory?
I see the range (when it's mentioned) ot 100 to 500 inch/pounds.
Any recommendations?

Re: [MBZ] RE What about you?

2008-09-22 Thread Wilton Strickland
Not only excessive moisture in the house, but lint, too.
BTW, there is an attachment for the duct that can recover most of that heat
and still exhaust the moisture and lint outside. It's an X-type duct with
heat exchanger in the middle - dryer air goes outside, the heat stays
inside, but you don't get something for nothing - 'have to run a small fan,
I think, to move house air through the heat exchanger.

I can sum up why I wasn't real excited about Iowa:
Panera doesn't have iced coffee.
If the mainstay of trendy doesn't have iced coffee I can't live there. I
can't live anywhere without iced coffee.
This was in Ames mind you which appears in other repects to be pretty trendy
but the girl didn't even seem to know what iced coffee was "what like coffee
with ice in it?". I had to settle for iced tea. At least they didn't make me
have sweet tea...

Re: [MBZ] OT - cordless screw drivers

2008-09-22 Thread Hendrik & Fay
I'd say buy a cordless drill, as you need to put a bit of pressure on
the screw to stop it from jumping in the screw head.
A while back I bought a 12v Bosch unit but it only has the facility to
accept a standard hexagon bit in it, rather than the traditional chuck.
These days with better battery technology, those little units have a
fair bit of grunt, so you don't need a high voltage one for home use.
The advantage being that they are light versus the 18v commercial ones
which weigh a tonne.

[MBZ] W124 Front Bumper Replacement

2008-09-22 Thread LarryT
Howdy -
Getting ready to install my new front bumper cover after I finally got some
paint to match. I printed the 3 procedures dealing with the front bumper and
none seem to difficult - except for the one (88-205) which calls for a Special
Tool to release and install the clips holding the small chrome trim strips in
place.

I'm hoping the clips can be massaged out with a small screw driver or something>

Anyone btdt?

I can sum up why I wasn't real excited about Iowa:
Panera doesn't have iced coffee.
If the mainstay of trendy doesn't have iced coffee I can't live there. I
can't live anywhere without iced coffee.
This was in Ames mind you which appears in other repects to be pretty trendy
but the girl didn't even seem to know what iced coffee was "what like coffee
with ice in it?". I had to settle for iced tea. At least they didn't make me
have sweet tea...

If the gasket is good and the cap nut is tight, then you must have a
warped lid or a warped reservoir. Unless your shaft seal is leaking
and you only think it is going out the top.

You might take a thread and put it across the reservoir, then tighten
the lid. if it is snug, you have a seal. If it pulls easily, you
have no seal. You could do the same with plastigauge also. You
should check at least every 60 degrees around the radius.

Hey Bob! How would we know anything about a 2005 car? We are just a
bunch of cretins with old cars, and some bottom feeders. My newest
is a 94 E320, but I doubt that anything is the same in your car,
other than being called an E320. If yours was a 94 or 95, I'd say
buy a throttle body.

my next newest, is 7 years older than the E320, so that makes it 18
years older than yours! I still think of it as a new car!

Just a little ribbing, since you moved up to the stealership world! ;>)

As far as fishing, going to
Singletons or driving to Saint Augustine for Shrimp at O'Steens, just no
time...

[MBZ] OT - cordless screw drivers

I am going to be installing new kitchen cabinets soon, and am thinking
about the number of screws I'll be driving. I don't think me arthritic
wrists are up to job anymore, so am thinking about one of these new
fangled cordless screw driver/drill thingies. My question is, how much
torque, or voltage do I need in a device to drive the appropriate
screws into/through hickory?
I see the range (when it's mentioned) ot 100 to 500 inch/pounds.
Any recommendations?

Can't make it. Killer office schedule this week, plus my boss is on vacation
the entire week so I get to do both my job and her job. (The upside (?) is
that I am an 'acting-Director' for five days.)

Besides, Hickory Park is far from vegetarian friendly. I'd have to order a
large portion of coleslaw.

Yes, I was wondering about a new chain. The PO did a couple of Diesel
purge treatments, we haven't, but I do have a can or two in the
garage.
It has new injectors, and hand cleaned pre-chambers, but we really
didn't get a thorough cleaning done of the deeper inner recesses.

Perhaps both Redline and a Diesel Purge treatment-- followed by a new chain.

Is it likely that the injection timer is OK, given that I see the same
timing with and without smoke?

You mean you are going to vent the dryer into the house? Did that one winter
in Maine -- the results were not all that good. Ended up with too much
moisture in the area (fogged the windows, etc.).

I can sum up why I wasn't real excited about Iowa:
Panera doesn't have iced coffee.
If the mainstay of trendy doesn't have iced coffee I can't live there. I can't
live anywhere without iced coffee.
This was in Ames mind you which appears in other repects to be pretty trendy
but the girl didn't even seem to know what iced coffee was "what like coffee
with ice in it?". I had to settle for iced tea. At least they didn't make me
have sweet tea...

I change out light bulbs when they burn out, but having so many little ones
running about they do tend to spend a lot of time on. Other than convincing
my darling wife that she is not really hot, and the sweat running down her
back must be from a thyroid problem [so her ophthalmologist thinks, also]
there is not a whole lot more we can do. In a few weeks the windows can be
opened and that will help a lot for a month or so -- maybe we could cut
down on the washer/dryer use by all becoming nudists. Old chubby white guy,

HOLY SNOT!

I start to get real upset when we go over $60... Of course the A/C hasn't
been on since July. Very mild summer here this year.
We burn about 500 gallons of oil and 2 cords of wood in the winter, the tax
is about $1000 a year. Pretty easy on the wallet this house. I expect the
oil bil to go down when I insulate the attic better and again when I have
the furnace replaced. The electric goes down a penny or two every time one
of the old 100watt bulbs (the old man that owned the house had all 100watt
bulbs) dies and I replace it with a 9w cf...

I am looking at an absolutely ridiculous electric bill for last month.  I
used the same amount of electricity as the same month last year, but my bill
is much higher due a fuel surcharge.  A normal Summer electric bill for the
house and apartment would be under $400, this year it is $525.  I assume
everyone is getting some of this - but more than a 25% increase is pretty
steep.

Re: [MBZ] PS Pump

2008-09-22 Thread Loren Faeth
If the gasket is good and the cap nut is tight, then you must have a
warped lid or a warped reservoir. Unless your shaft seal is leaking
and you only think it is going out the top.

You might take a thread and put it across the reservoir, then tighten
the lid. if it is snug, you have a seal. If it pulls easily, you
have no seal. You could do the same with plastigauge also. You
should check at least every 60 degrees around the radius.

I did not notice the car was new, I will offer him $500 for it since a
whole new computer, wiring, and fuel system will probably cost $25k or
so. I'll just make right turns in it, no problems.

I vote for clogged fuel line/filter or some bad gas (maybe water in it?
Lots of ethanol in the gas? You had lots of rain in your area?) Try
some dri-gas in the tank.

As far as fishing, going to
Singletons or driving to Saint Augustine for Shrimp at O'Steens, just no
time...

For cellular users, Sprint reserves the right to cancel you if you go over 5GB
per month, and Verizon charges a nice fat overage fee ($0.49 per MB last I
knew)
for going over 5GB. So far, I haven't received anything from Alltel (now merged
with Verizon) about overage charges on my account. I've been holding pretty
steady at 3.5GB per month for the several months. Probably most of it from
Youtube.

Re: [MBZ] What about you?

2008-09-22 Thread Bill R
No complaints about being in FL. I'm a native and like it here, though I
was a tad happier in S. FL, where we used the furnace about 10 hours or less
each Winter. The AC was usually running the next day, though. Jax does have
a moderate period Fall and Spring. I have a sister in NH, and lived in the
frozen wastelands of Indiana for 12 years [-34 was the coldest it got while
I was there.] I am not unfamiliar with the problems of heating - tough at a
lower cost back then. One of the nice things about more Summer than Winter
is that while heat can make you pretty miserable, with a little care it
won't actually hurt you. Can't say the same about cold. Cooling is
somewhat optional, heating is not.

Hey at least you are in Florida. I hear that some folks in the more northern
areas are likely to be pretty hard hit
this winter. I think I read that Maine has a very high number of people who
heat with oil. Not going to be good
news when they fill their tanks.

I am looking at an absolutely ridiculous electric bill for last month. I
used the same amount of electricity as the same month last year, but my bill
is much higher due a fuel surcharge. A normal Summer electric bill for the
house and apartment would be under $400, this year it is $525. I assume
everyone is getting some of this - but more than a 25% increase is pretty
steep.

Re: [MBZ] NOW: Atlantic Beach Fl Real Estate. WAS: How about You?

2008-09-22 Thread Bill R
Angelo - Sounds like the possibility of a nuclear carrier would help more
than Jax. The economy is not doing well with sales, of course, but while
rentals would seem to be going up I suspect many who are looking are also
those who lost their homes so might not be able to afford it. I have
insurance, of course, but I hesitate to recommend them as I don't
particularly like them. No strong reason for it other than that the only
time I have called them [a large tree broke and did some damage and was
threatening the house] I found the agent who answered to be almost rude.
Tower Hill is the name of the company, and I am not even sure where they are
located. I ended up with them when I suddenly realized the morning of
finalizing paperwork prior to closing that I needed coverage that afternoon
and not at closing. They were recommended by the closing agent as being
able to get it done that day. Lots of stuff is a bit more expensive down
here [if you have been following energy costs here you already know that.]
Don't look for bargain insurance.

As far as fishing, going to
Singletons or driving to Saint Augustine for Shrimp at O'Steens, just no
time...

Hey at least you are in Florida. I hear that some folks in the more northern

I am looking at an absolutely ridiculous electric bill for last month. I
used the same amount of electricity as the same month last year, but my bill
is much higher due a fuel surcharge. A normal Summer electric bill for the
house and apartment would be under $400, this year it is $525. I assume
everyone is getting some of this - but more than a 25% increase is pretty
steep.

For cellular users, Sprint reserves the right to cancel you if you go over
5GB
per month, and Verizon charges a nice fat overage fee ($0.49 per MB last I
knew)
for going over 5GB. So far, I haven't received anything from Alltel (now
