[MBZ] bcs whining some more

2008-11-02 Thread Gary Hurst
As mentioned previously, Texas and Alabama would not run the table.
Frankly, I didn't think either one of them would and still don't think.
Texas Tech is the last big 12 team with a shot at displacing Penn State in
the title game. To do this, they had to beat number 1 Texas last night and
top 10 teams Oklahoma State and Oklahoma in the next two games. Then they
have to win the Big 12 title game. The odds are not good. On the SEC
side, Alabama will have to win out against 2 good conference teams and then
beat Florida, who in my estimation is the best team in the nation right now.

Meanwhile, Penn State has be beat a pretty crappy Iowa team to continue
their sham.

Well my new car has a #14 and figured eventually I would need a new one,
thus I figured I would start looking now.

I did get a quote from Rusty for a new one.

Re: [MBZ] OT, moving thurderbird mail accounts

2008-11-02 Thread Trampas
I have a laptop which is becoming my primary computer. I just got a new hard
drive for it and installed Ubuntu as the primary OS, I run XP in VirtualBox.

I doubt I will go back to M$ as primary OS on any computer in the future as
VirtualBox just works. The great thing is that I made a back up of XP image
just after XP was installed which means I can go back to that image at any
time with out a reinstall.

BTDT. Read this: http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/profile
You will have to rename the folders and tell Thunderbird you did this.

If you enjoyed that then, you'd love this place

http://www.roughandtumble.org/rt-albums/rt-2007_reun/rt_photo_2007_reun.asp

The museum is close to Lancaster, PA and about 60 miles of
Philadelphia. We went there in August and saw so much big steam
equipment like

http://www.roughandtumble.org/rt-albums/rt-2007_reun/c/4764rt_2007_1_040.asp#Photo

that we got numb to it. And about 50 or so hit-and-miss engines of
various power and design, some standalone, some as a piece of
equipment like this saw

http://www.roughandtumble.org/rt-albums/rt-2007_reun/c/5518rt_2007_2_259.asp#Photo

Wonder what OSHA would saw about this little marvel today...

this tool should do what you want. Just don't crimp the reverse flare
down all the way and it will leave a bubble flair on the end of the tube.

A potential problem would be the tube vise leaving grooves in the tubing behind
the flare, right where you want to clamp the hose.

If there is nothing wrong with the 14 head now, chances are it will be

blow on their own unless you overheat it. By now most that are going to

[MBZ] OT: removing salt corrosion from aluminum

2008-11-02 Thread Allan Streib
Is there any chemical that will remove the white chalky-looking
corrosion from aluminum, I think this is mostly caused by road salt, you
see this on manifolds, cases, etc.

I've tried wire brushing and it does not seem to do much. Would
something like Lime-Away be worth trying?

Re: [MBZ] dash removal 201

2008-11-02 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Yea, thats the one. Its got the high tech custom manual shutoff for the
heat. Really want it to work properly. I know when I had it I was
driving it during the winter and the heat turned on and off I think. I
just ran thru the test procedure and it looks like every system has
leaks. The one that leaks the least is actually the part with the heat
shutoff valve. It will actually hold vacuum but leaks off slowly.
Valve still did not shut like it should. Wonder if something is wrong
with the pbu? With the CD you have to have special equipment to test
it. Seems soembody has a test for it on their website somewhere.

Re: [MBZ] Intermittent Temp Gauge: Related Subject............

2008-11-02 Thread David Hemsley

Angelo,

Yes the removal tools can be produced from coat hangers that you make a small
(approx. 1/2 inch) hook on near the end. I just prefer to use a purchased pair
of removal tools as I am not at all mechanical. This hook is inserted between
the dasj and the insturment cluster and then turned so that the hook catches
the back of that instruemtn cluster. You do this approximately 1/2 way up - on
both sides simultaneously - from the bottom of the cluster.

Once you "feel" the hooks grab behind the instrument cluster pull both hooks
towards you. MAKE SURE you have the hooks turned towards the back of the
instrument cluster and NOT the other way around as this can rip the dash lining
apart if done backwards.

Once the instrumjent cluster is loose form the dashboard pull it out be hand as
far as comfortably possible then reach behind and disconnect all fo the cables
and plugs. Just pay close attention to whre they are going to have to be put
back (what goes where.)

Before re-installation hook everything back up and then turn on the ignition to
make sure that you have replaced all of the light feeds into the correct
"idiot" windows.

I hope this helps.

A potential problem would be the tube vise leaving grooves in the
 tubing behind
the flare, right where you want to clamp the hose.

[MBZ] W124 vibration question

2008-11-02 Thread Wonko the Sane
First of all (especially for Kaleb), this is *not* a complaint about my
"new" car. It is more something that I have pondered over the last couple of
weeks, especially when my mind goes into idle -- something that seems to
happen more and more lately.

When driving my 300E, there is a vibration, much more felt than heard, when
there is pressure on the accelerator pedal. The strange thing is, if I lift
my foot from the accelerator pedal and coast, the vibration immediately goes
away. That sort of eliminates ... well, everything I can think of as the
culprit, except perhaps something related to the drive shaft. ... I've never
noticed it under really-quick acceleration moments, such as merging onto
I-80 with a heavy right foot, but perhaps that is because my broad smile
distracts me. (Remember, my only previous Benz experience was in a 240D --
so nice to now measure 20-70 acceleration times in seconds rather than
minutes!)

Not sure if vibration is the correct description, more of a very low
frequency growl -- but nothing you can hear as such, just something you can
feel in your butt. (No, this is not related to flatulence in any way.)

Any clues?

2008-11-02 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I cant say I noticed it too much, if I did, I forgot about it. My guess
would be flex disks.

Wonko the Sane wrote:

Any clues?

[MBZ] 300E oil question (I almost hate to ask this!)

2008-11-02 Thread Wonko the Sane
Mobil 1 web site recommends 0W-40 for my 300E. Not to be found around here,
even at the Mega SuperWalMart in Ames. They had a shelf tag for it but when
I asked the automotive manager about availability, he sort of laughed. Not a
lost conversation though, because I think he is going to up his stock of
15W-50 after our chat about diesel Benz oil recommendations.

Given that I have successfully used 15W-50 in my 240D, I can't see any
reason why I can't run it in my 300E. The 15W-50 flows well in really cold
temperatures and I can't see any downside of having -40 rather than -50.

As an aside, the local Goodyear shop chose to pour in Kendall 5W-30 (the
invoice said "semi-synthetic", whatever that means) when I had them do an
oil change 400 miles ago. After driving at 75 mph on I-35 from Des Moines to
Ames, the oil pressure needle was bouncing off of the 0 stop when I hit
stoplights on Duff Avenue. (That makes sense only to Loren.) That makes me
nervous. I reminded myself that my 240D drops the needle at stoplights and
it has run nicely for a couple of years now.

Re: [MBZ] W124 vibration question

2008-11-02 Thread Wonko the Sane
You drove the 300E doing highway miles. I am primarily driving it at 35 mph,
stop sign to stop sign. That is when I notice it. This certainly was not as
apparent on I-80 / I-35 as it was doing the stop and go stuff in Jefferson
or Ames.

I am still trying to learn how to drive the 300E. Entered an on-ramp for
I-80 today in Des Moines. Was doing about 30 mph as I glanced into my rear
view mirror to check for merge traffic. Pressed down -- somewhat lightly, I
thought -- on the go-pedal and got pushed back into my seat. As I merged at
70 mph (a very few seconds later), I backed off on the pedal -- I thought --
and continued accelerating to and thru 80 mph. That is 80 indicated, which
by the GPS is about 85.

The more I drive this car, the more I have flashbacks to flying the T-34. A
turbo-prop (or a jet, for that matter) has a certain lag between power
control input and response. With the 240D, you lift your foot and slow down.
With the 300E, you lift your foot and the car says, "Yea, I will slow down
when I get around to it."

Nont to worry about the oil pressure, the guage on that car is a little
flakey. It will bounce from about 1 or so to 0 at idle. Real reading is
about 1 to 1.5.

Is that the gauge or the sending unit? I'd like to fix it.

Just so you don't think I am totally anal -- not yet to be ruled out -- I
had the philosophy drilled into my head for years that you *trust your
gauges* (while having fun way up there in the sky, and actually being paid
to do it) and react accordingly. If oil pressure falls to 0 on one of the
engines, you don't say, "Oh, the gauge is flaky." You beat feet for the
nearest airport and review your feather-engine checklist.

Occupational hazard I just can't seem to shake.

[MBZ] Intermittent Temp Gauge/Inst Cluster Removal

2008-11-02 Thread Wilton Strickland

Here are the parts of my evapectomy summary relevant to inst cluster. (This
was on a 124, but the removal tools are same for a 126, and 126 cluster
extraction itself is basically the same.)

The problem I had removing the cluster is rare - had not had this prob. on
coupla 123 clusters I've removed, and have not heard of others having such
problem, which was caused by an excess of factory glue squeezed out around
the outside of the cluster holding it firmly in place.

 TOOLS:

I made two instrument cluster extraction tools from coathangers: on one end
of a piece of coathanger about 8" to 10" long, sharply bend a 3/16" length
of it at 95 to 100 degrees to the main shaft; form a circle on the other end
big enough to grasp and manipulate the tool well.

 STEERING WHEEL:

I did not remove the steering wheel; 'just ran it full out and put
front wheels straight ahead to have flat part of the steering wheel spoke on
top to allow inst cluster clearance.

SPEEDO CABLE

I did not disconnect cable at tranny; merely released it at clip on side of
steering column near floor and pulled slack from under car while pushing the
slack up under dash toward inst cluster.

 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER:

I had a REAL problem getting the inst cluster to slip out; the two rubber
pads on the underside of it and two on top of it would NOT SLIP along the
inner surface of the hole in the dash to allow me to extract the cluster. I
was able to apply PLENTY of extraction force. I had firm grips on both
sides of the cluster with my extraction tools about 3/4" down from the
curved, upper corner on each side or about 2 inches up on the sides from the
bottom corners - the cluster WOULD NOT MOVE. I was finally able to move the
cluster after I pushed the blade of a 2-inch-wide putty knife beneath the
cluster and pushed one of the rubber pads out of place toward the front of
the car. I then reached in from the underside and removed the pad with
channel-lock pliers aided by a mirror and feeling with my fingers. After I
removed the cluster, I found some factory glue on the outside of it that had
overflowed or squeezed out of the dash and insulation. This glue and the
stuck rubber pads held the cluster fast enough that I had been unable to
move it normally.

Before unplugging wires on the instrument cluster, I color-coded them with
different color paints - the small lamp sockets across the bottom right of
the cluster are all alike and can be easily plugged into the wrong socket on
re-assembly. Before re-inserting the cluster, make sure all the bulbs are
secure in their sockets - not loose.

When driving my 300E, there is a vibration, much more felt than

Not sure if vibration is the correct description, more of a very low

2008-11-02 Thread Peter Frederick
This is true of all gasser benzes -- they LOVE to run, and you get
much more power at the upper end of the rpm range that the bottom.

Also, the linkage opens the throttle in a very linear manner, leading
to the complaint that they don't have enough power off the line.
They have it, of course, but you have to mash the pedal ALL the way
down through the kickdown switch to get it all, light throttle gives
you a small throttel opening, unlike current GM and Japo/Korean cars
where the throttle snaps halfway open when you move the pedal off
idle, causing the car to leap at stop lights.

If you want to slow down, take your foot OFF the pedal, just lifting
it will just slowly reduce your speed!

My old 280 SE 4.5 is a dream to drive on the intestate -- road speed
is directly related to pedal position, and if you stomp down it flat
flies! Way too easy to run 95-100 mph without thinking.

Just so you don't think I am totally anal -- not yet to be ruled out -- I
had the philosophy drilled into my head for years that you *trust your
gauges* (while having fun way up there in the sky, and actually being paid
