Two congrats.

Fred and ALL:

Fred that was a great call. It appears that the sensor took care of
the problem. It stumbled a couple of times when i started it, but
then seemed fine after that. I figured the stumbling may have just
been some residue from before the sensor was changed.

It was a bear of a job! I was unable to get the old sensor to turn
in the hole. the lug broke off before the thing turned. then I
broke off the plug. then i tried to grab what was left with vice
grips. what was sticking out crumbled, but nothing budged.

it took me 5 hours of fiddling before I finally got the remains out.
It is mounted on the backside of the engine where you can't see it
aimed toward the front of the van. I went in with a burr on a
dremel, then tried to put a screw in the hole and pull it. The
screw got it turning in the hole, but it would not extract. I kept
pulling out pieces of plastic with the screw. Then i tried lag
screws. Could not get them to stick. Then I tried to rout out all
the innards of the sensor with a burr. After I got most of the
insides out of the shell, it finally came out.

I lubed the new sensor liberally. I am sure that is a no-no, but I
don't ever want to spend 6 hours on what should have been a 1 hour
job again! The bell housing is an Aluminum alloy, and it oxidized to
lock in the old sensor. I love never-seez.

you have to remove the air-intake between the air cleaner and the
intake manifold/throttle body to get access. It is done from the top.

Has anyone successfully changed the plugs on the back bank of a v-6
in a 96-200? Dodge caravan? are 2 of them accessible from
underneath? It looks like I can get the one on the driver's side
from on top, and maybe the middle one. Thanks to all!

I bought a new one from NAPA, (Echlin) but given your experience,
I'd rather find a used one. Do you know what the bad new ones you

I think i trust it more than the worldpac sensor. My junkyard

Thanks, hope to have this solved soon.

2008-12-03 Thread Loren Faeth
For the past 2 years I was trying to build up the hard cider
business. In Feb I was hauling a keg 200 miles, and I was almost
there when the road got bad (rough) I had previously hauled 2 keg
over the road laid on their back, in case the bung blew, with no
problem. Since I had no problems previously, this time I set the keg
up for the trip. The rough road evidently shook the keg a little too
much. The bung blew, spraying the interior of the van and me with
cider. I washed out what i could, but I never tried to clean the
headliner. By mid summer, it didn't smell anymore.

I am out of the business now. the land, orchard and equipment (and 7
of my MBs) are all gone. It was an incredible loss of a historic
business. Small greedy people are all over though.

Re: [MBZ] M119 broken timing chain

2008-12-03 Thread Hendrik & Fay
Ahh yes but is the timing chain broken? If the motor turns over this
would indicate that the chain is still intact, what usually happens is
that piece of the upper guide rail breaks loose and goes under the chain
and as it comes around the top it cracks the rocker cover.
You won't know until the rocker cover is removed but sounds like
complete disassembly of the front of the engine and renewal of the
guides, chain and tensioner. With a bit of luck the valves will be straight.
I would not be cranking the motor over in case the chain jumps another
tooth but rather turn the motor by hand and see if the valves move.
From memory the recommended interval for guides, chain and tensioner is
100K miles. Guess this was not done, which may well mean this vehicle
was not maintained that well.

Interesting. The air cleaner doesn't really obscure the timing chest,
where a broken chain would hit. I'll try to make it out there and
have a peek. That has got to be a new world record for cheapest 140.

I came really close to buying Gene's boss's E420. Forget the year but it was
the last year of the W124. Black & black, showroom condition (not so much as
a door ding). He wanted $6000 and that would have required a loan and car

He ended up letting his teen daughter drive it to school and then traded it
on a BMW SUV, to go along with their G500.

Oh no, you have a good car, it was a good cheap car. This is just at
least a notch or 2 up the scale from that car, so far anyway at least
from a cosmetic standpoint. Will know more about the mechanics soon.

Figured out why the speedo on the 300E is off by 5 mph (you are going 5 mph
faster than what the speedo shows, as checked with GPS). The "book" calls
for 195/65/15 and the tires on the car are 195/70/15.

I heard something about these things. They are used to replace the
spent chemistry in the system. Not sure how you spend it, but IIRC

use proper coolant and Mobil 1

GM makes these little pellets I don't know what they are made of,
but you crush them with a hammer and put them in the radiator. They
are supposed to accomplish the same thing as Bars Leak (and other
similar products). A lot of Cadillac owners with the 4.1, 4.5, 4.9
and Northstar use them as a preventative measure for minor leaks.
My car doesn't have any leaks, but they cost about $5 and offer some
measure of extra protection for water pump, intake gasket, or head
gasket leaks.

The way I figure it, I spent what I made off of one of the junker

One of those, Cobalt or Aveo, I cant remember which is actually made by
some other company. In Korea maybe? I know the VIN format is different

Curt Raymond wrote:

Hear hear! Bankruptcy is the only way to save GM in any lasting sense.

My plan would be different, file bankruptcy, close Pontiac, and Buick. Kill
Chevy trucks, all trucks are now GMC but there will be no separate dealerships,
GMC will be a business unit of Chevrolet. Saab I haven't decided on, there is a
rabid Saab following but I'd be curious how much money the line makes.

I'd eliminate most of the cross between Chevy and Cadillac, maybe one or two bridge cars but not many. I'd streamline the lines, fewer models done well. I'd focus on smaller cars and return to making a small station wagon.

HAIL the return of the station wagon that American family tradition!

I HATE the Cobalt, everything about it screams cheap. I've never driven one but
I've sat in an Aveo and been absolutely shocked about how good a cheap crappy
little car it felt like...

I'm with you on Hyundai making a nice car now. I had an Elantra as a rental and
really enjoyed it. I'm not with you on GM buying anybody, they need to get
smaller and better not bigger. If they could steal some of Hyundai's
management...

Ok maybe there are others that would contend for the Title, but the Cimmaron
has to be included in the list. I would also add the:

Ford Pinto (only the exploding models - I think the rest were okay junky little
cars)
Plymouth Volare the rusted on the show room floor
Cadillac 8-6-4

Engine reliability problems

Chevy Corvair
A better car than it gets credit for, Triumphs and MBZs had jacking problems
back then too IIRC.

Ford Edsel

Name one thing wrong with this, other than lack of sales.

AMC Gremlin
Wasn't any more or less reliable than other AMC product of the early 70's. Back
seat was a pain to get in and out of. My sister had two of them. Nearly died
totaling the first one when she was 18, but what small 1972 car was made to take
a Buick 225 Electra in the driver's door at high speed?

Yugo
Pile of crap. I worked with somebody who bought one about the same time I bought
my Horizon. 50,000 miles later the Horizon was like new, the Yugo was blowing
oil smoke and running poorly, and I think it had suspension problems too.

Vega
Good car after they put a Pontiac engine in it (1976 I think). Monza was much
the same car but prettier IMO.

Renault Alliance (although my Aunt had the convertible version and loved it).

Ok, so it was less reliable than a VW Rabbit..

Mitch.

early Mustang with rusty floors and bad brakes. Dad nixed that too. Mike ended
up with a really nice powder blue Galaxie 500 Fastback. I ended up buying a '75

You're kidding, right? Been to the Pacific Northwest or New England
lately? I see as many older Saabs here as older BMWs or Benzes, and
nearly as many newer ones. Saab has TREMENDOUS intangible value in
its brand name and heritage, though GM management has done its best to
destroy that as only it can by selling badge-engineered Opels,
Subarus, and Trailblazers as Saabs. I would expect one of the
emerging-markets players, perhaps Mahindra or Tata, to snap up Saab
sooner or later. If they're really smart they will buy Volvo from
Ford at the same time and build some fantastic cars with the resulting
critical mass of Scandinavian technology---a sterling safety record,
and the best-driving front-drive chassis besides the Mini.

Re: [MBZ] If I were running GM . . .

2008-12-03 Thread Curt Raymond

I'd eliminate most of the cross between Chevy and Cadillac, maybe one or two
bridge cars but not many. I'd streamline the lines, fewer models done well. I'd
focus on smaller cars and return to making a small station wagon.

If
I were running GM, I would give up on this bailout nonsense and go for
Bankruptcy. Really.  If they took this course, they could break all of
the Union contracts that are killing GM. They could cut wages, cut out
the health care for life, the fairly massive salaries for factory line
workers and could likely emerge as a profitable enterprise.  Before
they do that, though, they should figure out a way to massively
leverage the company (if there is any room left) and buy Hyundai.  I
think Hyundai has a great formula for success right now. They are
making better and better cars, they are showing profit and eating into
Honda and Toyotas dominance.  GM could also learn something about
Hyundai's plan to offer 100,000 mile warranties.

I would also
HEAVILY invest in the smaller cars.  Keep making the Cobalt, but make
the interior finish nicer. I would also continue to partner with Honda
to put Honda engines in the small SUV's. Currently, the Saturn Vue has
a Honda engine in it.  Why not license Honda's excellent 4 and 6
cylinder engines for use in small cars.  Finally, I would beef up the
performance sectors of Cadillac (they are already doing a lot with the
new "V" cars), and also continue to promote the excitement and fun of
Pontiac.  They also need to push the heck out sales of big American
cars like the Park Avenue and the Cadillac Deville to China (they are
already doing this, but need to do more).

Interesting. The air cleaner doesn't really obscure the timing chest,
where a broken chain would hit. I'll try to make it out there and have
a peek. That has got to be a new world record for cheapest 140.

But it was badged as a Cadillac, not an "Opel", so anyone who knew what
an Opel was and might be interested never checked it out. They also
made it heavier with luxury accessories and softened the suspension, so
it felt like driving a La-Z-Boy not a Euro sedan.

They also tried selling a Cavalier with leather called a "Cinnamon" or
something. Nobody was fooled.

Maintenance? On a 15 year old Cadillac that cost less than $2K? No worries man.
Just drive it for a while and sell
it to someone else. Why worry about maintenance? It is not like it is an old MB

Re: [MBZ] If I were running GM . . .

2008-12-03 Thread Peter Frederick
GM's problems are, and have been as long as I've known anything about them,
exceedingly poor management. The reason their cars cost so much to make isn't
the union contracts, but sloppy design, bad parts, badly planned and executed
assembly, their notorious penny pinching, ancient equipment, and gross overload
of un-needed and incompetent managerial staff run by financial people instead
of engineers.

If they has spend half of what they spend every year on lobbying to prevent EPA
milage limits on engine research and design they would have met all the
mandated mileage increases and then some, and raised their profits quite a bit
at the time.

My brother left GM shortly after he joined them -- no hope of the company
surviving long term. After all, they never managed to respond the the VW
Bettle with an adequate automobile, and that showed up in 1949 for heaven's
sake.

The only way I would ever give them a dime is for them to build NEW
manufacturing facilities on the site of the old ones, using their own Union
workers, reduce their management head count by at least 80%, and pay GS scale
for salaried jobs. No perks, no bonuses, no stock options (which should be
illegal anyway). Welcome to reality!

Would that work? Probably at least as well as propping up the South Vietmanese
Government in the 1960s.

I quit going to HD a few years ago after they refused to replace a
lifetime guarantee router bit (satisfaction guaranteed! free
replacement!), $20, and the parking lot started filling up with nails
and trash (cutback on sweeping) and Mexicans aggressively begging for
work. I took my considerable business to Lowes. I think the pres of HD
cashed out for hundreds of million$ after the company tanked, he's now
begging in DC after a stellar job at one of the car companies. I keep
trying to figure out how to get a job like that, so far no luck.

The $10 tool sets seem pretty good, the locking pliers' screws are a bit
rough, but at $2.50 each I can't complain. The slip joint pliers are
pretty nice. All have good grippy rubber handles and lifetime no
questions asked free replacement at Lowes.

It will be interesting, you are right. But, I suspect it will be interesting in
the sense that maintenance is lower than expected. The one common failure on
the 4.9 L engine in my car is the water pump - which was just replaced by the
seller. Otherwise, it is typical GM stuff. It will need an alternator every
50-60,000 miles (which is easy to change and not very expensive). I am getting
the transmission "flush" today for $79. I think I can do the brakes, if
necessary, but they look pretty good. The spark plugs have been changed
recently as was the fuel filter. Unless something catastrophic happens (knock
wood), it should be a fairly low maintenance vehicle for the next 1-2 years (at
least during my ownership).

I am also going to do my own coolant flush this weekend (making sure there is
NO more Dex cool junk in it) and I think I will use the G-05 and will add the
GM Coolant pellets also.

That is not quite true. There are some GMC only features and options. But,
you are right for the most part, they are identical. One other difference is
the dealership. When we had GMC, we had customers who refused to buy a chevy
because they hated the Chevy dealer. MOST GMC dealerships are also paired with
Pontiac Dealership IF a local dealer does not have all of the lines i.e. Chevy,
Pontiac, Cadillac, and GMC.

Oh I forgot, it's OK to take my pay and benefits so that someone else
who's ALREADY BEEN PAID for their work can get more.

I know, let's just set standard salaries for everyone, and fix the
prices of goods and services so that everyone can afford what they need.
I wonder why nobody's ever tried that before? Sounds fair to me.
