Yup - my TV still has a tube - as do my monitors.
To counter my backward ways, I'm about to finish downloading Windows 7

No crackberry here either - too much email as it is, without carrying

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes 190d 2.2L w/Automatic - too slow?

2009-01-09 Thread Tyler
My understanding is that most of the parts for the swap can be obtained
from a gasoline manual 190D. You might still need a diesel flywheel and
rear diff...

Also, I've noticed that 190D injector pumps provide a very rough
transition between coasting and power, as the fuel is suddenly turned on
and off to the engine as if it were shut off when you let off the
throttle. I think that manual cars are equipped with some sort of device
to smooth out the fuel delivery as to prevent the car from bucking hard...
Anyone know more about this?

I want to convert my 190DT to manual, once I find a suitable parts donor
in the junkyard, so I've started researching it a bit, and there are
several people out there that have already done the conversion.

big relief for him, as the job offer came on 11/11 and he has just been
waiting around in an empty apartment he leased up there. He is finally
buying furniture and getting set up in his apartment. Sue and I are flying

I don't know the answer to that.

You can manually shift the 240D automatic through the gears -- it's a lot
faster that way. Just be careful in shifting to "L" and then slowing down
-- that's what broke our 240D automatic.

> Anyone know what is involved to convert the 190D auto to a manual?

When our 240D's automatic transmission broke, I converted it to a 300D
with a manual transmission. Much better.

It's a lot of work. You need to change the flywheel and match-balance the
new one to the old (I did not on an OM617 and got away with it), put a
pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft, mount the clutch plates to the
new flywheel, mate the transmission to the engine, change the rear support
member's location (and maybe the rear support member), change the
driveshaft, and change the differential (at least for 240D -> 300D). You
also need to get the pedal hanger and other hardware to operate the
clutch.

It helps to have a parts car available that's in the configuration to
which you want to change your car. I did.

Seeing

Re: [MBZ] O/T BAck up Harddrive

2009-01-09 Thread Bill R
I downloaded each of the two options on the MS site, and neither would work;
I went to the other site and it will not display on my computer. I think I
need to be more diligent about backing up my files on the second drive.

that would have also given him a reasonable commission.

And you learned that they'd rather sit around playing euchre until they get laid
off from their jobs than to deal with you. I don't think I'd set foot in that
particular shop again. Here in the states, we can just go two miles down the
street to the next GM dealership. How far is your next nearest Chebby dealer?

One method I've wanted to try is just bypass the salescritters entirely.
Get the name of the mew car manager or the fleet sales manager, and the fax
number. Do this for every Brand X dealership within 100 miles or so. Send them
all a nice fax at 8AM: "I am going to buy a HHR with the following options
today. _ I am sending this fax to several dealers. Please respond with your
best price."

The last new purchase I was involved with, there was a Dodge dealer advertising
1.5% below invoice less incentives plus advertising surcharge on special orders.
I faxed the options list to that dealer's fleet manager, he faxed me the order
sheet and price quote, and I gave it to my father. Dad wasn't too keen on buying
from a dealer 80 miles away, even with free driveway delivery, so he went to a
dealer 20 miles away and they ended up selling him one for invoice with free
lifetime oil changes. So he paid $300 more, but they change his oil, with Mopar
filter, every three months or 3,000 miles. So far he's gotten about 25 oil
changes for that $300.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes 190d 2.2L w/Automatic - too slow?

Yea they are slow but not too bad once you get used to it. Converting
to a 5 speed would be a big job. It would require basically you have
another 5 speed car sitting next to it so you can swap everything over.

[MBZ] Autoworkers

2009-01-09 Thread Scott Ritchey
I received the following from a couple of sources (which makes it
particularly suspect) but some of you seem to have an inside perspective on
the Detroit auto industry and may want to comment. Also, in my experience
"labor cost" is 1.5x to 2x what employees actually receive in salary.

-

I'm still trying to verify the facts, but I think it is close,

According to Forbes:

Labor cost per hour, wages and benefits for hourly workers.

Ford: $70.51 ($141,020 per year)

GM: $73.26 ($146,520 per year)

Chrysler: $75.86 ($151,720 per year)

Toyota, Honda, Nissan (in U.S.): $48.00 ($96,000 per year)

According to AAUP and IES, the average annual compensation for a college
professor in 2006 was $92,973 (average salary nationally of $73,207 + 27%
benefits).

Bottom Line: The average UAW worker with a high school diploma earns 57.6%
more compensation than the average university professor with a Ph.D., and
52.6% more than the average worker at Toyota, Honda or Nissan.

Many industry analysts say the Detroit Three, need be on par with Toyota and
Honda to compete/survive. This year's contract, they say, must be
"transformational" in reducing pension and health care costs.

What would "transformational" mean? One way to think about
"transformational" would mean that UAW workers, most with a high school
diploma, would have to accept compensation equal to that of the average
university professor with a PhD.

Then there's the "Job Bank"

When a D3 (Detroit 3 carmaker) lays an employee off, that employee continues
to receive all benefits - medical, retirement, etc., etc., PLUS an hourly
wage of $31/hour.

Here's a typical story

Ken Pool is making good money. On weekdays, he shows up at 7 a.m. at Ford
Motor Co.'s Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne, signs in, and then starts working
-- on a crossword puzzle. Pool hates the monotony, but the pay is good: more
than $31 an hour, plus benefits.

"We just go in and play crossword puzzles, watch videos that someone brings
in or read the newspaper," he says. "Otherwise, I just sit."

Pool is one of more than 12,000 American autoworkers who, instead of
installing windshields or bending sheet metal, spend their days counting the
hours in a jobs bank set up by Detroit automakers as demanded by the United
Auto Workers Union - UAW - as part of an extraordinary job security
agreement.

Now the D3 wants Joe Taxpayer to pick up this tab in a $25 Billion bailout
package - soon to be increased to $45 Billion if Nancy Pelosi and Hillary
Clinton have their way.

The "Big 3" want this money - not to build better autos. No. They want it to
pay the tab for Medical and Retirement benefits for RETIRED auto workers.
Not ONE PENNY would be used to make them more competitive, or to improve the
quality of their cars.

We ALL have problems paying for our Medical Insurance - but the Democrat
leaders in Congress now want us to pay the Medical Insurance premiums of
folks who have RETIRED from Ford, GM and Chrysler.

Not a good deal for us.

How about Chapter 11 - and getting rid of these ridiculous union contracts?

No, the 2.4L Twin Cam was the final evolution of the 2.3L Quad 4.

The 2.4L Ecotec is a grown up version of the 2.2L Saab Ecotec that started
finding its way into Achievas, Grand Ams and Saturns around 2002.
I don't know of any service headaches on the Ecotec, but it has a bad reputation
for cam chain lube failure on engines before the 2004 model year. They increased
the oil delivery to the chain for 2004, but AFAIK never admitted responsibility
for broken chains on the earlier engines. Gary had a Saturn L-series with the
old Ecotec.

2009-01-09 Thread Kevin Kraly

Good one, Mitch! I do have an advantage working in areas where one can't
get enough light or when it's a job totally done by feel since it's way up
under the dash. The windshield wiper linkage on one of our Pintos needed to
be changed out since one side was broken, and the parts car had one to
donate. I decided to give it a try since I had nothing but time. I was
able to get a hand up under the dashboard to maneuver a 1/4" ratchet and
socket in there to get the 3 bolts out on each side. I had to drop the
radio and glovebox as well as the main defroster ducts to swap them which
was the easiest part of the job, 2.5 hours from start to finish. I did have
quite the sense of accomplishment afterward, but It's making the scars and
remaining skin tissue on my knuckles ache just thinking about it! Anyone
have a W115 heater blower motor replacement job that needs doing? I'm ready
to try that next! :D

Listen to Ed! This is the proper way to negotiate a good deal.

Generally I think that if it takes someone less than a day to accept an
offer, than you probably paid too much.

I don't argue or haggle, I look at their asking price, make what I feel is a
reasonable out the door offer and leave it on the table for 1-2 days.

What can I say, I was happy to give them a cheque for $16,000, and I felt
that would have also given him a reasonable commission.

Did my bit, tried to help, they weren't interested. On to the next Benz I

Re: [MBZ] Autoworkers

According to the local paper this morning, you should be able to have a brand
new 08 Uplander for $17K. I cannot
recall if there was enough extra "9's" on the end of the number to make it
essentially $18K but that sounds better
than $16,000 for a used one. I "think" that included shipping and prep as well.

I have learned to expect the silly $300 document fee and to calculate it into
my offer up front rather than argue
about it after I think I have a deal.

I think I have only run into the etching thing once. Of course, they always try
to sell you the extended warranty
too.

Well, I tried to do my bit and help, I really did. Last week as you know, I
walked into a Chev dealer, test drove a year old, 39,000 kms Uplander that
they were asking $15,988 for. Ok, I said to the guy, I'll give you your

on it, $100, and I'll write you a check. I'll leave the offer on the table
for a day or so, you go and check with you manager.

As it turns out, they can't sell it for that, I'm being unrealistic. Seems
there are other fees. Oh really, what? Admin fees, and saftey package.
Oh. So, when I walked in, you and 5 guys were sitting around, talking about
the upcoming weekend, and yet, you want to charge me $500 for some admin
fees? I think you can eat those fees. So what's this safety stuff? Oh, we
etch a number on each panel so if the car is stolen, it can be traced, and
we put nitrogen in the tires. I see. I take it the panels were already
etched, being a used car, and I'll go out on a limb here and guess the tires
have the same nitrogen in them as when it arrived on your used car lot?

So, being a large dealer, with zero people in the showroom but me, a lot
full of cars, all your staff sitting around and chatting; offering you your
ASKING price, minus the taxes is unreasonable. Ok.

All 126's are electrical, IIRC. As are late-model 107 SL's.
201's are mechanical, I think 124's might be mechanical but I
could easily be wrong on that. I thought everything else newer

Well, I tried to do my bit and help, I really did. Last week as you know, I
walked into a Chev dealer, test drove a year old, 39,000 kms Uplander that
they were asking $15,988 for. Ok, I said to the guy, I'll give you your
price, $16,000 in face, and you take care of the taxes 12% and stick a plate
on it, $100, and I'll write you a check.

Ok.

So guys, I need help finding my next Benz. The old 300E was/is great, but
this time, I'm thinking something along the lines of a newer E, no more than
10 years old, and no more than 100,000 miles or so. Thoughts and
recommendations appreciated.

I think you are talking about a W211 which has the older Comand and uses DVDs
for the navigation data. Comand for the current models (W221, W204 and the
GLK plus the 2010 W212 store all their data on an internal hard drive, with a
separate partition for customer loaded music. The DVD I ordered ($249) updates
the nav database

It's true that when cost is no factor you can do anything, but retrofitting
Comand is a huge project considering the wiring and the remote units and so on.

Re: [MBZ] snow survival

2009-01-09 Thread Tyler
Yep, that's what I was wondering.

I would imagine that the slicker the surface, the less front->rear weight
transfer before lockup, and therefore the greater importance of the rear
brakes in stopping the vehicle. I would think that a true 4 channel system
would give quicker stops on patchy ice, in particular. I have no idea if
this effect is significant though in the real world.

I could think of an imaginary situation where the right two tires are on
the side of the road a bit on ice, and the left two are on dry pavement.
If the front->rear weight balance of the car were about equal during
braking because the car is balanced, and the max possible braking was very
light then in this situation the maximum stopping force would be almost
double with a 4 channel ABS system than with a 3 channel, because the 3
channel could only provide significant braking torque to a single wheel.

My W201s have a single rear ABS sensor on the pinion shaft, was that what you
were asking? Most of the braking is done with the front wheels, so you don't
lose much if both rear brakes get modulated when only one wheel was skidding.
You might say the purpose of front ABS is to maximize braking and the purpose of
rear ABS is to prevent loss of stability.

Re: [MBZ] Autoworkers

2009-01-09 Thread Scott Ritchey

These payments are negotiated in good faith by the Autoworkers and MANAGEMENT.

If management gave the farm away, shame on them! I suggest THEY were greedy
and/or stupid to make those concessions.

When they want to get tough is before the negotiations, not after it's signed.

BTW, I've been in manufacturing management for 30+ years. I'm thinking of
writing a book from both sides.

Re: [MBZ] snow survival

2009-01-09 Thread Tyler
Anyone know anything about the ABS system on 80s MBs? Is it 3 or 4 channel?

I've always avoided ABS cars (especially 80s ones) because poor ABS is
worse than none, yet the 80s MB system seems to work VERY well. I had
people in newer SUVs stop suddenly in front of me while driving on 6" of
snow without snow tires, and I was able to stop much quicker than them!

Not I, I very much enjoy my internet connection and my Mercedes. For one,
I wouldn't be able to visit or talk to most of my friends and family
without them because they've moved all around the USA and the world.

I don't think this is what the quote was getting at. He (and I) wasn't
saying to avoid spending money on things not required to survival, but
rather a re-ordering of priorities to think of money as a tool to help you
meet your life goals, rather than the goal itself.

Their is an illusion/myth in our culture that happiness comes from having
enough money and material possessions. People keep wanting more, but their
desire is endless so they are never satisfied or happy regardless of what
they get.

This is well illustrated by the concept of a hungry ghost in ancient
Buddhist mythology. A hungry ghost is a being with endless hunger, but a
tiny throat that only allows it to eat a small amount of food, so it is
eternally experiencing endless desire and unhappy/dissatisfied.

It is not in public beta as far as I can tell.

There may be some copies available to MSDN subscribers. That will
cost you $750 per year. The official word seems to be that win7 is pre-beta.

see:
http://www.windowsvienna.com/how-to-download-windows-7-beta-a23.html

It looks like you can sign up now, and if they select you, then you
will get to download. I probably don't have hardware hefty enough to
run it if it is a resource-hogging jump like vista was from XP.

Rather than buying a bunch of new hardware, I may become an ubutnick
like LT Don whenever XP is unserviceable
I did prove to my satisfaction that Wizzta will run on minimal
hardware when you configure it to the 2000 interface. I found i
could even install it on a 10 gig drive, but that left almost no room
for patches and SW. Patches have really bloated winders OS since Winders 2000.

2009-01-09 Thread Curt Raymond
Lets still face that no other industry has anything this stupid. I get laid
off, my unemployment runs out and NOBODY pays me anything... Why should an
autoworker be any different?

I sort of appreciate your continual standing up for the automakers, it must get
to be a drag. Still I'll continue to beat them up for having the GALL to expect
me to bail them out after 50 years of bad choices. Yeah their legacy costs are
high, why haven't they done anything about it? Smart companies look for things

The fourth case is what the author really meant when discussing the job
bank. It?s the SUB pay program. And yes, laid off workers qualify for SUB
pay but the program only kicks in after unemployment, only pays up to 85%
after unemployment and the actual weekly benefit paid is scaled based on
years of service. In other words, the actual check received could be 40% or
less, depending on years of service. And to qualify for unemployment, all
states require you to look for a job. Find a replacement job and the
unemployment goes away, making the SUB pay disappear at the same time.

nsformational" would mean that UAW workers, most with a high school
diploma, would have to accept compensation equal to that of the average
university professor with a PhD.

The early macbooks are a dream for people who do their own repairs,
they're very easy to disassemble and very simple inside- almost like a
desktop pc!

I like mine quite a bit, but I also wish they had made it a bit smaller.
12" is a perfect size in my opinion, because it leaves room for a full
sized desktop keyboard.

Mao,

I like that quote quite a bit. It seems that recently people have begun to
accept without question that the purpose of life is to make money, instead
of the purpose of money being to help one trade with others to meet their
basic needs for survival. I find the idea of a life purposed around
extracting a profit from the world to be a very depressing and dull

Dave,

I went and downloaded this thing cause I thought it would be neat to
have. When I unpacked it my virus guard had a problem with it. Something
about it contains the SPR tool passview XPA whatever that is. I'm
thinking it may be as little as the engine that looks for the keys or as
big as something that looks for the keys and sends them back to someone
somewhere. Does anyone know anything on this?

It's a good idea to record your activation codes before the shit hits
 the
fan. You can use Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to get them if you don't
 have
the original codes. And don't just put them in a file on your hard disk
 - if
it dies you can't get to them.

I read these discussions with great interest.

One of the main reasons I stuck with the older cars for years was my belief
in the fact that there is a certain nobility in keeping something that was
built to last and serve a useful purpose, active and useful. Just as, for
example, my parents always purchased the high-end furniture and had it
refinished/recovered/rebuilt as the decades passed.

Unfortunately, you can only be the salmon who decides to swim against the
current up to a certain point.

In my part of the northeast/rustbelt there is simply no interest in older
cars anymore, as far as the auto industry is concerned. There are virtually
no wrenches left who have the inclination to work on even the most pristine
older Benz for anything resembling sane money.

The markups on working on the newer European models are just too alluring.
They see a 126 as a bothersome anachronism. A turbodiesel 126 drips oil on
their shop floor to boot. The guy who gave me the $440 bill for my tranny
cable actually had the brass balls to complain about that. I kid you not.
And that car did not leak much.

Oh, there were bright spots. My local import parts dealer always helped me
out. But they are getting frustrated. Every last significant part I ordered
over the last year was either wrong (listing problem) or failed right out of
the box and had to be exchanged. Not sustainable for them.

The manager of the parts counter of one of our local dealers is a great guy.
He always helped me out. But over the last few months I have been hearing
something I never before experienced with Mercedes: "Sorry, that's NLA" (or
backordered forever, in Mercedes parlance).

Kaleb suffers from the conceit common to many people who are knowledgeable
about working on older cars. If I understand it, it cannot be hard.
Unfortunately I was born with two left thumbs, I am not naturally
mechanically inclined and what I have learned came really, really hard over
many hours of trial, error and more error. Yeah, in the parlance of my high
school years, I'm a five-star dork. And I got into wrenching my own stuff
way too late in life. My bad on that.

When you take the attitude that you should not be driving an older car if
you cannot do this or that job, then this community starts to sound like a
religious cult. It makes me very uncomfortable.

Most of the people I have corresponded with on these assorted MB lists (and
I have been around since Hurst was looking for his first Mercedes on Dave
L's original one) relied on some level of shop support to keep their cars on
the road. When that is no longer there, you are at the mercy of people's
memories as you troll multiple lists for advice, in the hope that someone
has had the same situation as you in the past. I can tell you have had
numerous instances where I either came up empty-handed, or worse got bad
advice from someone whose memory had evidently faded.

As usual I have rambled a bit. So yes, I miss my 126 and I miss making a
statement against the consumer culture. But the man will get you in the end,
as we used to say in the 70s.

So will trying to drive 25-yr old cars in a region whose climate ranges from
-35 deg C in the worst of the winter, to 35 deg C or more with punishing
humidity in the summers. Old equipment creaks, groans and fails when asked
to tackle that.

And so, finally, did I :)

Cheers
Mac

Backup is there in XP Pro. If you use the bubble gum interface as it
comes out of the box, there should still be a way to get to
accessories through the programs button. Look for "accessories" or
"system tools." backup is in system tools.

Or just do a search for ntbackup.exe that should find it for you.

Re: [MBZ] Daily driving old cars (was 2005 Magnum)

2009-01-09 Thread LWB250
Well put, Steve.

I agree with you totally.  While I was formally trained as a mechanic, working
on these older cars becomes more and more problematic as they age.  Parts are
getting harder to find, and unless you have a legacy shop in your area, forget
finding someone to work on them when something comes up that you don't want to
do or don't have the means or ability to do.

Despite being able to service and repair these cars if I chose to, my
priorities and interests have shifted to the point where I don't care to spend
hours of my weekends underneath them or buried up to my elbows in one.  I guess
if my kids took an interest in them (they don't) or I had some other compelling
reason to do it, I would.  Otherwise, I have gotten to the point where a car is
transportation and should not require constant upkeep on my part.

That being said, the day will come that I will probably find one to tinker with
as a "fun" car, but I have no expectation that I will ever have one as a daily
driver again.  There just isn't enough time in the day.

My youngest son has it in his mind that he would like to have a 300E.  I have
been gently directing him elsewhere, as he is not a mechanical sort, although
he's willing to learn and does have the ability if he chose to do so.  I don't
think he would have the tolerance for the time and effort involved for
maintaining a car of this vintage.  I would also like to see him in something
newer, as newer = safer, even taking the MB safety record into account.
