When our 240D/3.0 was bubbling around the base (where the injectors screw into the prechamber), it was because someone who had done work before had not put the injector seals in when they put it back together -- some spilled diesel acted as "leak detect" fluid and exposed the leak with bubbles. Yours sounds different, though, like it's actually leaking diesel from some place on the injectors and not making bubbles where they screw into the prechambers. More great fun. Re: [MBZ] OBD scanners for our old and newer MBs
You can do "ok" with a Baum/autoland scientech cs2000/iScan I used one for a while before going the eBay sds route (if you do it, get one that looks like the original; it is likely to simply have the "actia" name scraped off the boards inside)... For the older stuff, the Baum is a good unit, but there are things that it cannot do on the canbus cars, but it's a decent unit. There is also a mercedes round connector mux/autoswitch with some of them, as well as obd-ii muxen about. -- John W Reames jwrea...@comcast.net Home: +14106646986 Mobile: +14437915905 On Aug 29, 2010, at 17:32, OK Don wrote: > Anyone have recommendations for OBD code scanners? Yours sounds different, though, like it's actually leaking diesel from some place on the injectors and not making bubbles where they screw into the prechambers. More great fun. According to the "Model Year 1986 Model 126 Supplement" which Steve Nervig helpfully included in his 126 FSM index, the test procedure for the Klima is exactly the same between 124 and '86-on 126. If you follow the whole procedure you can test all the input and output signals at the pins of the Klima socket (and, therefore, of course, deduce, if necessary, that it is faulty, if all the inputs and outputs are correct but your compressor still isn't turning on when it should). Along the way you get to test the A/C pressure switches, the fan switch, and the compressor speed sensor, if I recall correctly. I've emailed the file directly to Wilton. Gerry One will last for decades and survive power surges or a shorted filament. One has much smoother variability, and can go down to low voltages without dropping out. One can be dialed back up from low dimnesses without popping on and having to be dialed back down. One can power things that are waveform sensitive. One costs at least ten times as much as the other. The AC chopper does a job inexpensively, but makes filaments buzz and can make some real nasty noise on the AC line. The other does not. One will last for decades and survive power surges or a shorted filament. A chopper dimmer that does _not_ cost $10 can probably do as good a job as the variac at dimming filament lamps. That's what's found in stage lighting now instead of variacs. Did I mention that they don't cost $10? :-) Both lower the RMS voltage. If they didn't, the lamp wouldn't dim. But the _shape_ of the waveform is radically different. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Gerry A Variac is a variable transformer, so the output waveform is identical to the input, just "smaller". A dimmer (SCR or Triac) doesn't change the voltage, just the "duty cycle". It turns on and off fast enough that it can be on for only a fraction of the 1/120 of a second each "wave" of the 60 Hz AC power line. Confused? -- Philip -- I know how dimmer switches work but I wasn't sure about a variac. Back in the '50s I had a big round heavy gizmo with a knob in the center that could be used as a motor control. I was under the impression that it was effectively a series of resistors; the whole unit being basically a rheostat or potentiometer, but could it have been a variac? I can understand how you would want a continuous wave form for some applications, but it would seem that for simpler applications like filament heating or motor speed control, the dimmer switch would work as well for much less cost. This means that all you get is a very choppy signal, kinda like stomping on the brakes till you're at a halt then accelerating back up to the set point, and repeting. In this manner, it attenuates the total voltage, but destroys the underlying waveform. A variac is a variable autotransformer that lowers(or raises on some) the actual voltage of the line, while keeping the rest of the waveform untouched. It's like slowly letting off the pedal to drop speed, then setting cruise control. Walt, who should be sleeping now. --- See above.
