Just ran car several blocks; injectors are dry; no bubbles. Likely still
leaking gases, though, but no fuel around them to make bubbles.

Stick with simple stuff. First dry off all the old spilled fuel, and
see if it comes back. Then replace the heat shields (aka seals) under
the suspect injectors, and check the return lines again - the nipples
may be scored or your new line the wrong size - too big. Fuel can leak
from the hard line connection, the return lines, or from between the two
halves of the injector holder body. Anything coming up from the
combustion side should only be gasses.

When our 240D/3.0 was bubbling around the base (where the injectors

screw

into the prechamber), it was because someone who had done work before

had

not put the injector seals in when they put it back together -- some
spilled diesel acted as "leak detect" fluid and exposed the leak with
bubbles.

Yours sounds different, though, like it's actually leaking diesel from
some place on the injectors and not making bubbles where they screw

into

the prechambers.

More great fun.

Probably fun you wish you could avoid.

On my '90 350SDL with aux fans that won't kick in and an erratic temp
guage,
(goes from 85 to pegged @ 120+, and back again), a slight tap at the top
of
the dashboard above the gauge will cause it to jump, so we figured the
guage
it intermittent. Even hit the block with a laser thermometer by the
sensor

, engine is cooling as it should. IIRC, there are 2 separate sensors, one
for the gauge, which we replaced, thinking the sensor was intermittent.
The

other goes to the ACC unit. Don't remember if the sensor or the relay
replacement caused the fans to start working again, but I know we did not
replace the ACC PBU. YMMV.

Got 4 cans of R-12 left. Only enough for 1 re-charge after I find where
my

leak is. ;-(

Re: [MBZ] OBD scanners for our old and newer MBs

2010-08-30 Thread John Reames
You can do "ok" with a Baum/autoland scientech cs2000/iScan

I used one for a while before going the eBay sds route (if you do it, get one
that looks like the original; it is likely to simply have the "actia" name
scraped off the boards inside)...

For the older stuff, the Baum is a good unit, but there are things that it
cannot do on the canbus cars, but it's a decent unit.

There is also a mercedes round connector mux/autoswitch with some of them, as
well as obd-ii muxen about.

It is in the 124 FSM, file 83-605.pdf. According to the "Model Year
1986 Model 126 Supplement" which Steve Nervig helpfully included in
his 126 FSM index, the test procedure for the Klima is exactly the
same between 124 and '86-on 126. If you follow the whole procedure
you can test all the input and output signals at the pins of the Klima
socket (and, therefore, of course, deduce, if necessary, that it is
faulty, if all the inputs and outputs are correct but your compressor
still isn't turning on when it should). Along the way you get to test
the A/C pressure switches, the fan switch, and the compressor speed
sensor, if I recall correctly.

I've emailed the file directly to Wilton.

Again, it's only the aux fans that don't work automatically; compressor
works fine, and fans will run when straight wired or aux fan relays are
jumpered; no power at high press switch by dryer.

From: "Jim Cathey"

What's the functional difference between a 110 vac 15 amp variac
and a 110 vac 15 amp light dimmer switch which costs about $10?

Gerry

One will last for decades and survive power surges or a shorted
filament.
One has much smoother variability, and can go down to low voltages
without dropping out. One can be dialed back up from low dimnesses
without popping on and having to be dialed back down. One can power
things that are waveform sensitive. One costs at least ten times as
much as the other.

The AC chopper does a job inexpensively, but makes filaments buzz
and can make some real nasty noise on the AC line. The other does not.

A chopper dimmer that does _not_ cost $10 can probably do as good
a job as the variac at dimming filament lamps. That's what's found
in stage lighting now instead of variacs. Did I mention that they
don't cost $10? :-)

Both lower the RMS voltage. If they didn't, the lamp wouldn't
dim. But the _shape_ of the waveform is radically different.
-- Jim

Okay, thanks. Wondered if the choppy wave form on a filament would
affect the output.

I doubt those will be a direct bolt-in, but with enough time and money
you can make anything fit. I imagine it would be far easier to rebuild
your /8 seats.

OK, I can deal with that no problem. Did a 123 twice using the

Re: [MBZ] 91 350SDL leaking injectors

2010-08-30 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Stick with simple stuff. First dry off all the old spilled fuel, and
see if it comes back. Then replace the heat shields (aka seals) under
the suspect injectors, and check the return lines again - the nipples
may be scored or your new line the wrong size - too big. Fuel can leak
from the hard line connection, the return lines, or from between the two
halves of the injector holder body. Anything coming up from the
combustion side should only be gasses.

Sure looks to me like it's bubbling at the base where they screw in.

That's the plan! You're my witness - first time my 3 year old laid eyes
on it, she said "Thanks for the pretty blue car Dad!" In another 12
years when she's learning to drive, I think it will be in fine shape to
keep her safe.

Once I've got the process down, the wagon will get new rear rubber bits
during the winter.

What's the functional difference between a 110 vac 15 amp variac and a
110 vac 15 amp light dimmer switch which costs about $10?

Okay, thanks. Wondered if the choppy wave form on a filament would affect
the output.

I was under the impression that it was
effectively a series of resistors; the whole unit being basically a
rheostat or potentiometer, but could it have been a variac?

Jim: Easy to tell: did it get bloody hot in operation? If yes,
resistors. If not, Variac.

Gerry: Must have been resistors since it started spewing smoke when I had
it hooked up to a big motor. Never worked after that.

J: There are also motor controls that _are_ resistors, but that
are in the field or other control windings, and so gain a
multiplier effect as they don't take the main motor current
through them. They don't get as hot.

As far as cheapness goes, I like to get my Variacs at the
thrift shop. They don't turn up too often!

Don't think I've ever seen anything like that at the thrift stores around
here. Of course, this is a farming and retirement area.

A Variac is a variable transformer, so the output waveform is
identical to the input, just "smaller".

A dimmer (SCR or Triac) doesn't change the voltage, just the
"duty cycle". It turns on and off fast enough that it can be on
for only a fraction of the 1/120 of a second each "wave" of the
60 Hz AC power line.
Confused?
-- Philip

--
I know how dimmer switches work but I wasn't sure about a variac. Back in
the '50s I had a big round heavy gizmo with a knob in the center that could
be used as a motor control. I was under the impression that it was
effectively a series of resistors; the whole unit being basically a rheostat
or potentiometer, but could it have been a variac?
I can understand how you would want a continuous wave form for some
applications, but it would seem that for simpler applications like filament
heating or motor speed control, the dimmer switch would work as well for
much less cost.

Walt wrote:
Most dimmers chop the ac waveform up, usualy by dropping the voltage to zero

This means that all you get is a very choppy signal, kinda like stomping on
the brakes till you're at a halt then accelerating back up to the set point,
and repeting. In this manner, it attenuates the total voltage, but destroys
the underlying waveform.
A variac is a variable autotransformer that lowers(or raises on some) the
actual voltage of the line, while keeping the rest of the waveform
untouched. It's like slowly letting off the pedal to drop speed, then
setting cruise control.
Walt, who should be sleeping now.
